My Perfect Omega - Chapter 38

“No matter if you’re a Duke, you can’t act this way!”
As soon as they arrived at the Este residence, Benjamin, who had been waiting, burst out in anger. As the head of the family, sometimes you had to stand up even to those of higher rank to protect your family.
But Lucas was unfazed. The Count was not trying to protect his family but hiding his own flaws like a fool.
“As you said, I am a Duke. Why shouldn’t I?”
Lucas’s arrogant words left Benjamin momentarily speechless. Contrary to rumors, Lucas did not seem kind but rather exuded an air of arrogance and intimidation.
Lucas’s lips were set in a firm line, showing no trace of a smile. His expression was cold and severe.
“Regardless of your relationship, as her father, I will not permit it. So stop coming here so rudely!”
Benjamin shouted, trying to mask his intimidation. He roughly grabbed Leila, who had caused this commotion.
“Blood will tell! You’re just like your deceased mother, sly and deceitful!”
Leila showed no reaction to Benjamin’s low blow. Her face, full of weary resignation, indicated she had heard similar insults countless times before.
Lucas wondered if this man could truly be called a noble. No matter how much you wanted to show animosity towards someone, this was not how you treated your own child.
His mistrust of people deepened. The world was full of the base and the vile.
“Count, I must say, perhaps you need to learn how to maintain your dignity. If you weren’t wearing expensive clothes, I wouldn’t even know you were a noble.”
Lucas’s blatant sarcasm made Benjamin’s face turn red. He gripped Leila’s wrist tightly and sneered.
“…I will not let this go. My child’s marriage has already been arranged, so give up this ridiculous love affair. After all, Your Grace isn’t seriously considering to marry my child. It’s just because of the rut, isn’t it? Am I wrong?”
Philip shouted at the outrageous remark.
“How dare you speak such nonsense to whom?”
“A mere viscount has no place to interfere!”
Benjamin shouted at Philip, feeling victorious. Lucas didn’t say another word. He simply watched as Leila was dragged away.
“In any case, do not come to my estate uninvited again! I will not tolerate it any longer!”
Feeling a base sense of satisfaction from thinking he had bested the Duke, Benjamin walked into the mansion with a triumphant look, followed by Sarah.
Thinking of the now unseen Leila, Lucas muttered,
“Philip, you didn’t see the maid, right?”
“Yes, it felt like we missed her by a hair… there were traces suggesting she escaped through another door.”
“Why would a blind woman separate from her maid, who is like her hands and feet?”
Realizing he had missed something, Lucas smiled at Benjamin who was glaring at him even after entering the mansion. It had been a long time since he had felt such deep anger, making his competitive spirit surge.
Running his hand through his hair slowly, he climbed into his carriage, still pondering Leila’s thoughts and why she had sent Anna away.
Yet one thing was clear.
“She came out today not for herself but to help her maid escape.”
He felt deceived, but at least he now understood the reason behind her cooperation in their ridiculous act of pretending to be lovers.
“There hasn’t been any message from the palace yet?”
“No, sir. I instructed the staff to send a carrier bird immediately once the letter had arrived. Even though I whistled intermittently to guide the pigeon, it hasn’t come yet, The letter must not have arrived yet.”
“In that case, we’ll head to the palace instead of the mansion.”
Lucas decided not to wait any longer. He was experiencing intense curiosity for the first time in his life.
“Yes, that’s reason enough.”
