My Perfect Omega - Chapter 75
Leila sat alone on the bench, feeling the breeze. It was still a bit warm, but the wind was refreshing. She thought it would be even cooler if she were in the shade under a tree. Just as she was thinking this, Emma approached.
“Miss, the preparations are complete. Since this spot is sunny, would you like to move to a shaded area before the master arrives?”
“Yes, alright.”
Although it was pleasant to watch the sunlight play, it seemed wise to move when Emma suggested it. Leila took her hand and sat at the prepared table.
“Then, I’ll bring the master.”
Leila nodded slightly at Emma’s words. She sensed that there were still people around, but she didn’t turn her head toward them. Though she had received warm care since arriving at the ducal residence, she had experienced enough cruelty from the servants at the Este household.
She didn’t want to attract attention from people she didn’t know, but it seemed she had already caught their interest. As soon as Emma left, she could hear their whispered conversations clearly, almost as if they wanted her to hear.
“I thought the master had high standards…”
“If I’d known, I would have made a move with my eyes closed.”
“Yeah, me too.”
“He never even glanced at maids like us, but just because she’s a noble, a blind woman gets to be the lady of the historic Bavenberg Duchy…”
“Do we really have to serve a lady with such defects?”
To say she wasn’t hurt by the words of these faceless maids would be a lie. However, she was so accustomed to such remarks that she didn’t react. But her silence seemed to provoke them further.
“What? Is she deaf too? She probably doesn’t even know who we are since she can’t see.”
“Pfft, how does someone live if they can’t see or hear?”
“They should just die.”
The malicious words, laden with venom, were more lethal than poison. Leila couldn’t help but respond.
“Then why don’t you get me some poison? Instead of just wishing for my death.”
“…What?”
“Don’t pretend you didn’t say it. I’m just a defective person who can’t see. Why act like you don’t know now?”
“What, she heard everything.”
“Didn’t you talk loudly so I could hear?”
“…Ugh, so annoying.”
The maids began whispering among themselves again. But Leila could still hear everything.
“Hey, she’s not going to tell the master, is she?”
“Let her. Who would believe her?”
“But it feels unsettling.”
They were now worried about their own safety after carelessly speaking their minds. This made Leila feel nauseated. The servants at the Count’s household were just like that. They would openly insult her and then fear retribution, often taking petty revenge.
If she reported this, she would likely face worse treatment, such as finding stones in her food or being served wilted salads.
Leila sighed softly and muttered to herself, “Maybe I should just go back inside.”
Her earlier enjoyment of the walk was now completely ruined, and she felt a twinge of annoyance. Just as she decided to tell Lucas and head back inside, she heard a chilling voice.
“What did you just say?”
Lucas had arrived without her noticing and had overheard everything. He couldn’t believe what he had just witnessed. Out of habit, he had approached the tea area quietly and listened to the conversation from afar.
What he heard was outrageous. He wondered if these crude people were really his employees or if intruders had somehow snuck in.
More shocking than their words was Leila’s response. Her bleak, pessimistic tone and her suggestion to fetch poison made his blood boil with anger.
