I lifted my chin and looked down on her.

“What’s the point of talking about someone who’s already dead? Don’t delude yourself into thinking this will change your situation.”

“I don’t know why you believe he’s dead, but… I figured you’d want to hear it anyway.”

Grandis had the expression of someone who’d already gotten what she wanted.

Her mindset was obvious:

The betrayal and fall of the patriarch she once idolized. The thrill and twisted satisfaction that I—her object of inferiority and resentment—turned out to be just like her. The sense of kinship. Pity. The hollowness of all the fights we’d had.

And the hope that whatever favor I’d earned from the guards and top-rank prisoners wouldn’t last.

In one word: arrogance.

And right now, trying to smooth things over with me was the smartest move she could make.

“The day the bloodlines planned to meet secretly at the harbor…”

Why is she starting her story out of nowhere?

She didn’t seem like she was going to lie, so I decided to hear her out.

“I didn’t know they were dealing with the Divine Order. When I found out, I tried to track down Marquis Farsene.”

So this was all just a build-up to defend herself?

I stared at her with a look that said ‘And? So what?’

She continued slowly.

“Viviana and your fiancé Enoch swore loyalty to the Order. They set the whole thing in motion.

Thanks to them, everyone—including your fiancé—escaped overseas safely.

Isn’t it hilarious? The nobles who once strutted around are now servants of the Order.”

“Not funny.”

Being gracious about it is only possible when you’re the one pulling the strings.

I clenched my fists, thinking of Enoch and Viviana.

Whatever hell they gave me—I’d return it, tenfold.

“So, what’s the secret? I know the crap they pulled already. Get to the point.”

At my words, Grandis shrugged and cut to the chase.

“According to them, Marquis Claude Farsene never showed up to the rendezvous. So they assumed he ditched them and ran.”

As she went on, her tone began to waver with confusion.

“And just before the escape… They said they found traces of divine power. It was strange, how suddenly he started looking out for us, wasn’t it? He must’ve made a deal with the Order.”

That was something I didn’t know.

Now that she said it… it was odd how my uncle, known for being cold and ruthless to others, suddenly helped the bloodline clans escape.

I’d accepted his kindness without question—but to others, it would’ve been a shocking change.

Grandis said:

“In the end, everyone sided with the Order—and you’re the only one who ended up in prison.”

“You’re in prison too.”

“Viviana sold me out while on the run. With Number 4’s spirit abilities, I found out she was the real killer who murdered my fiancé. Honestly, most of the conflict between us might’ve been orchestrated by her. Even when we almost split up because of some misunderstanding—that was probably her doing too.”

“That misunderstanding? That was totally me.”

I admitted it confidently.

She started it. I just hit back harder.

Whether or not she really did it didn’t matter to me.

I added, in a dry voice,

“Besides the manipulation—didn’t you hate me from the beginning anyway?”

Grandis looked taken aback, as if she’d actually been hoping to mend things.

I crossed my arms and went on, indifferent.

“The past doesn’t matter. And your whole ‘I hated you, but now I’ve moved on’ thing doesn’t matter either. Weren’t you about to tell me about my uncle using divine power? Spit it out.”

“…You’re insane. There’s just no way I could ever like you.”

Grandis said with an exhausted look, then continued.

“I don’t know the full details. The last guy feeding me info died.”

Ah. That must’ve been El, wearing Justina’s skin.

Said he’d scoop out magic and replace it with divine power.

So either my uncle awakened a second power like me, or he got possessed and had his ability swapped.

“Anyway, just like you said—I still hate you. The only thing that’s changed is who the main enemy is.”

“Then let’s call it a truce. I’ve got no time to deal with you right now.”

I waved her off like she was a bother—because now, she had nothing left to offer.

“Sure. It’s not like we won’t be seeing a new public enemy any day now.”
