Obsession... What's That? I Just Wish Someone Would Help Me Escape - Chapter 56
He had said he’d collect my soul, so he must’ve come down to confirm the kill.
“Hmm… It’s strange. Was I under some kind of spell?”
I looked at him with a confused expression.
“You might have been caught in the trees and hidden from sight. That’s why you’re still alive.”
“I see. Thanks for letting me know.”
I gave him an innocent smile.
Number 27 glanced at the cup of flower-scented tea.
“What’s that?”
“It’s dandelion tea, good for coughing. It only blooms in the mornings during this spring weather.”
I lifted the cup and took a sip before offering it to him.
“Would you like some? It’s a bit lukewarm now, but it smells great.”
“No thanks.”
“I made enough to share. At least try it out of politeness.”
He looked slightly troubled, a hint of reluctance passing over his eyes.
“Fine. It’s been a while since I had tea.”
Resigned, he wiped away his doubts and took a sip of the tea.
Since I had already drunk some myself, he couldn’t afford to refuse—any suspicion would only make him look guilty.
I tilted my head towards him, smiling sweetly, then asked in a low voice,
“Executioner. How many ability users have you killed so far?”
An eerie silence hung in the air.
Number 27 locked eyes with me, his gaze growing menacing.
“Hah, so you’ve remembered everything but pretended otherwise?”
“Yep.”
Number 27 chuckled darkly as he stood up.
What he pulled from his pocket wasn’t a stone knife but a sharp dagger.
“Well, it can’t be helped. You’ll have to die right here.”
I glanced at the blade pointed at me and let out a small, scoffing laugh.
“Eloastre must really favor the people of the Order, huh? Seems he doesn’t mind if you slaughter hundreds of people.”
Grinding his teeth hard, Number 27’s jaw was misaligned on both sides.
“Shut up. I’m just purifying the filthy blood of your beast-like kin who sided with the demons.”
I lowered my gaze, staring at him.
“Hey. Why do you think I bothered telling a lowlife like you the truth?”
“What?”
I flashed him the same smile he had worn when he cornered me on that cliff.
“Wouldn’t it suck to die without knowing why? It’s only fair, right?”
“W-what… Gah!”
The time had come.
Blood as dark as crimson began to trickle from his nose and mouth.
I smiled leisurely.
“Got lucky and found some blue centipede venom. You’ve got about thirty seconds left—any last words?”
“Guh… Grr… urgh…”
Foaming blood at the mouth, he collapsed to the ground and began convulsing.
Having been forced to drink ‘medicine’—actually poison—by my parents my whole life, I’d built up resistance to most toxins.
I heard him mutter weakly as he rolled on the ground.
“Deliver… me… from evil…”
And with that, his convulsions ceased.
The sharp rise and fall of his chest slowly stilled until there was no movement at all.
He was dead.
“You were evil to me.”
As I muttered softly, a radiant light suddenly poured from 27’s body and began flowing into me.
And before my eyes, a dark window and strange characters appeared.
[The One Who Recovers Incompetence]
Demon God’s Abilities/Recovers the opponent’s soul and abilities.
L Recovered Ability: Hallucination of Enlightenment (Divine Series)
⚠ Currently unawakened, unable to use recovered abilities.
It’s a system window, isn’t it?
I stared at the system window in shock, my mouth agape.
The message window was much clearer and more complete than before.
The letters were more defined now, though still not entirely perfect.
They say everyone’s method of casting differs—some use spells, rituals, or chants—but why is mine like this? Is it because I lived in the modern world?
“Hallucination ability…?”
Was this what he tried to use on me back at the cliff?
I looked down at the now lifeless body of Number 27—no, the executioner.
Just then, my heart began pounding as I thought of my uncle, who had wielded many abilities.
‘The choice is yours. Whether to be saved from evil or saved by evil.’
The words of the platinum-haired man I had met at the bottom of the cliff suddenly echoed in my mind.
“The power of sloth.”
I muttered to myself absentmindedly, my face blank.
My ability was to steal the powers of those I killed.
And one of my uncle’s abilities had been the wave power that my deceased father used.
