Obsession... What's That? I Just Wish Someone Would Help Me Escape - Chapter 88
With a sigh, Kido trudged along the bleak, plastered corridor.
Number 48, who’d been randomly assigned to her team, suddenly grabbed her hand tightly.
“It’s okay, don’t worry! Just because you’re the lowest-ranked doesn’t mean you’ll die!”
“Why don’t you work on stopping your hand from shaking?”
Kido responded with a dry remark.
She then spotted Grandis on the opposing team and let out a scoff.
She’d already anticipated that Grandis would bribe a guard to be placed on a team with a single-digit prisoner.
I even switched the order to put her team first just to give her some trouble, but it looks like she made it up here easily enough.
“Looks like Number 4 saved her energy just for us, seeing as nobody’s died on her way up.”
Johann twisted his neck back and forth as if stretching. Enrique nodded along.
“Her abilities drain a lot of mental and physical strength.”
Prisoner Number 48 clung to Kido with a terrified expression.
“Please, let go. You’re in the way.”
“I’m just nervous! The warmth of human touch brings comfort, you know?”
Kido shook off her arm, annoyed, but Number 48 only held on tighter.
Number 12 clicked his tongue, watching the two with disdain.
“Lucky trash. Just make sure you don’t drag us down.”
Honestly, Number 12 didn’t have much to contribute either.
He was just lucky to be on the winning team. Number 48’s eyes sparkled as she nodded vigorously.
“Right! I’ll do my best to help. No one is useless in this world.”
“That means don’t do anything! You flower-headed idiot!”
Despite Number 12’s harsh words, Number 48’s positive demeanor didn’t falter.
As the final teams faced off in the hushed arena, Grandis fixed her gaze on Kido, smirking.
“Were you scared of me, Kido? It seems you went to great lengths to avoid facing me. But here we are after all. What a shame.”
Kido tilted her head and shrugged.
“You’re always the same.”
She lazily let her shoulders relax and continued.
“You always take things so seriously, putting all your energy into things that hardly matter. It’s like you’re in love or something. ”
“What nonsense are you spouting?”
“Winning against me might be the goal of your life, but not mine. You’ve never even been on my priority list. You’re just another pest trying to make a nuisance of yourself.”
Grandis’s lips curled into a scowl.
No matter how much Kido had cozied up to Prisoner Number 1 and Number 2 by sharing a cell, Grandis was certain that if she found an opening, she could kill her on the spot. That’s why she teamed up with Number 4.
“It’s not about winning. My goal is to kill you, Beatrice Kido.”
“See? You’re the one taking it seriously. You didn’t forget our bet, did you?”
As soon as Kido finished speaking and flicked her fingers, a rush of hot wind whooshed by.
In an instant, Johann reached Grandis and struck her neck from behind with an expressionless face.
Thud!
“Ugh, what…?”
Grandis collapsed to the ground, shock still frozen on her face.
Mission accomplished, Johann shrugged at Kido.
“All done?”
“Well done.”
Grandis looked up at the two in a daze.
Number 1 taking orders from the lowest-ranked Number 49?
What kind of arrangement was this?
And why was Number 1 acting like he was waiting for her praise?
A guard overseeing the match raised his hand.
“Attack before the match began. Team E is disqualified. The final victory goes to Team A.”
Kido’s team was declared disqualified, much to the jeering of the crowd, and Kido simply laughed.
Grandis, barely recovering her senses, paled as Kido addressed her.
“Grandis, remember what you said? Birds hear what is said during the day, and mice hear what is said at night?”[1]
“Don’t tell me… you did that on purpose?”
Earlier, Kido had deliberately let Grandis catch her meeting with Guard Damian, knowing she’d likely eavesdrop with her animal-like hearing.
There, she’d dropped mentions of winning bonuses and match-fixing.
Kido was certain Grandis would use that information to bribe the guard into betting on her team.
“The reason I entertained you all this time? Just wanted to watch you f**k with you. Like right now.”
With that, Kido stepped back and raised her voice.
“Miss Number 8, deceiving the guard into fixing five wins and even taking the prize! Who knew you were the chosen one!”
The rookie guard, who had staked everything based on Grandis’s word, went pale.
“Number 8, what’s the meaning of this?! So Number 49 wasn’t the chosen one?”
