Obsession... What's That? I Just Wish Someone Would Help Me Escape - Chapter 89
“You schemed with another guard to deceive me! No wonder the order changed again!”
The enraged rookie guard lunged at Grandis.
Dodging his fist effortlessly, Grandis frowned.
“Hah, I’ve had enough of this.”
Thud!
Grandis struck the guard, knocking him unconscious in a single blow.
Oh, so rather than lose the bet and be forced to do as I say, she’d rather get herself thrown into the punishment cell?
Kido, realizing her intention, let a smirk tug at her lips.
Number 4, who had been quietly watching, turned her gaze to Grandis and asked.
“So, Number. 8, you were the intended victor?”
It almost sounded like you could hear Grandis’s mind racing.
With a quick decision, she nodded.
“Yes, that’s right. That’s why I wanted to be on your team, Number 4. Winning this time would secure you that training instructor position you wanted…”
Number 4’s expression turned icy.
“Did I ask for that kind of help? At the expense of my honor?”
Perhaps all she had left was her pride, making her disdainful of aid from someone she deemed inferior.
“I was only waiting for the moment to prove it… that an Enhanced could surpass a Wielder…” [1]
Muttering softly, Number 4 buried her head in her hands, a sinister aura gradually emanating around her, darkening the surroundings in an instant.
“Number 4 is about to use her forbidden ability!”
A guard’s urgent shout echoed from a distance.
* * *
Since strong Wielders could access a range of abilities depending on their attributes, certain abilities were prohibited.
Number 4, Lize, possessed a forbidden ability—a spirit medium power that created a space to contact the dead, one that could damage the minds of her targets.
Behind her, a dark portal to the underworld opened, filling the air with agonizing screams like a path to the depths of hell.
“Already branded a sinner, so who cares about bans?”
Lize laughed triumphantly.
Though born from a family of demons aligned with the Demon of Envy, she had never been chosen by any demon lord, suffering her whole life from jealousy toward Wielders.
She wanted to prove, more than anything, that an Enhanced could overcome a Wielder.
And now, her life’s ambition was finally within reach, standing before her: Johann and Enrique, both Wielders.
Though Kido was technically a Wielder, who would believe that of the so-called “Lowest Number 49”?
“How is she able to use the ability the Saintess sealed?”
Alarmed, high-ranking guards began rushing into the arena.
Lize wore a twisted smile, a blend of euphoria and liberation at finally unlocking the taboo ability.
“Tampering with the control collar.”
Kido muttered to herself and instinctively glanced up at the audience seats.
Seated among the spectators, Justina smiled, the corners of her lips curling up.
She was the one who had lifted the restriction on the forbidden ability—or rather, he had.
“The Numbers. 1 and 2 haven’t received timely edification. There’s a high risk of rampage tendencies. Begin evacuation immediately.”
At Damian’s order, other guards swiftly moved to clear out the people.
The rookie guard, cheeks swollen and bruised, clung desperately to his senior.
“W-Will the win be annulled? Will there be a refund or a rematch?”
“Is that what matters now?”
“You know I bet everything I had!”
The senior guard, recalling the rookie’s earlier arrogance, chuckled.
“What’s done is done. You’d best hurry and pay back the money you owe me.”
With a look of despair, the rookie guard backed away, tearing at his hair.
“Damn it! I’m not letting this go! Argh!”

“All prisoners above Number 10, stay behind and be prepared for a rampage outbreak.”
Upon the high-ranking guard’s command, the prisoners who had been ushered out and were milling about outside the arena wore expressions of fear.
“Oh, so Number 4’s the one with ghost powers?”
Enrique remarked, Johann nudged Kido with his elbow.
“Hey, are you afraid of ghosts?”
“No, I’ve never seen one before. If I do, I’d like to ask them about their coordinates on the plane.”
“I saw one when I was little. Back then…”
Just as Johann was about to delve into the details of his ghostly encounter, Lize removed her glasses, tucking them into her pocket. Her amber eyes turned into a menacing black.
She now wielded her spirit-sight, enabling her to see souls and the afterlife.
“I’ll let you meet those you miss.”
Placing her hands over her face, she spoke, her fingers slightly parting to reveal her dark eyes shining through.
“On the boundary of life and death.”
Lize’s voice lowered, and the arena transformed into a chaotic space, where the realms of the living and the dead converged.
The stadium, which had been noisy from the evacuation, was suddenly eerily silent.
“Quickly stop number four…….”
Guards who tried to halt her stopped dead, their faces vacant, gazing at something invisible.
All around, people stood frozen, staring blankly into the air as if mesmerized.
T/N:
[1] Just to clarify for you all – here, an Enhanced means that you have abilities inherited from your family. but if you’re a wielder, you’re chosen personally by a demon or demon lord to enter a contract with them the way Kido was.
I apologize because I might have gotten terminology messed up – I had assumed there was only 1 specific term for all of these ability users. I’ll be correcting past chapters to reflect this change. Thank you and sorry!
