‘If I use the fortification skill often, its level should increase, right? If the range expands, I could save more people.’

The problem is that I don’t know what will happen when my lifespan ends.

[Time remaining: 33 days]

It must have passed midnight as another day has been shaved off. Still, with about a month left, there’s still some time. I’ll just have to raise my skill levels as much as possible during that time.

‘And I need to complete the hidden quests too.’

There are two hidden quests I need to complete.

One will reveal its contents when I leave the party, and the other doesn’t even show its conditions.

‘Actually, this hidden quest is the real problem.’

If I complete the hidden quests, I can be revived here even if I die after 33 days, but if I miss even one, my soul will be annihilated.

I promised Callion I’d stay with him, so I can’t just disappear.

“Arvan. I have something to ask you.”

“What is it?”

“Imagine there’s a god in this world.”

“Huh?”

Since Arvan can’t see my system window at all, it’s difficult to explain directly. There probably isn’t anything like an online game in this world either.

“Let’s say this god designated a person as a savior to save others. But this person doesn’t have any special abilities, so they need to be taught and nurtured one by one. The god gives small tasks and rewards when they’re completed.”

Though I knew my explanation was unclear and awkward, Arvan listened attentively and nodded. His response gave me confidence. I proceeded to detail my circumstances, abilities, and quests one by one.

“The savior who received rewards one by one has grown a bit. Now god wants to give a bigger reward. What kind of task do you think the god would give?”

“Hmm. It would be one of two things.”

“Huh?”

It wouldn’t be strange if he reacted with disgust, saying what nonsense this was, but Arvan not only didn’t complain about my clumsy explanation but also quickly came up with an answer.

“Based on the flow so far, the tasks god gives to the savior don’t deviate from the main premise of ‘saving people’. This applies to improving abilities, increasing companions, and strengthening relationships.”

I couldn’t explain the charm skill that has additional effects when having relations with men as it is, so I glossed over it as ‘companionship’, but fortunately, the core seems to have been conveyed.

“So the next task will be the same. One is to improve external abilities. It might even be the abilities of companions, not the savior themselves.”

It’s hard enough to raise my own skill levels, let alone raise ally skills. That’s too harsh a condition.

The only ally skill I know is Senes’s ‘Recovery by Feeding’, and he’s not even a party member anymore.

“The other is to give the savior an internal reason… a goal.”

“A goal?”

“The savior is forcibly carrying out tasks given by the god, right? The existence of rewards also means that without them, the savior wouldn’t perform the tasks.”

To be precise, if I don’t complete the tasks, my life will be gone and my soul will be annihilated, but it looks like I’m saving people just to get some measly rewards.

I felt a bit wronged, but Arvan doesn’t know my circumstances, so it can’t be helped.

Pushing aside the feeling of injustice for a moment, I decided to listen to Arvan’s story.

“So?”

“If the savior sincerely wants to save people, they’ll move voluntarily even without rewards. If the god’s purpose is to grow the savior, they’ll probably expect internal growth as well.”

‘Voluntarily saving people’, huh? I’m already doing that.

I’ve saved people multiple times with the position reversal skill in the village below the mountain, and I’ve decided to stay and protect the people in the castle instead of running away.

How much more voluntary do I need to be?

“This is all I can think of on the spot, but it’s not very helpful, is it?”

“Ah, no. It was helpful. Very much so.”

External growth and internal growth. These are quests that a system aimed at saving people would likely create.

Although I couldn’t know the specific details, I was glad to have a direction. The conditions for the other hidden quest haven’t appeared yet, so if I confirm and complete that quest first, I should be able to figure out the path for the remaining one.

“But Ju-in. What does the story you told me have to do with your situation?”

“…Huh?”

“The story about performing tasks given by a god and receiving rewards. Isn’t it about your situation?”

“Hiccup.”

I hiccupped from the unexpected direct hit.

‘What? How did he figure it out?’

Well, my explanation was so vague that it would be suspicious what purpose I had in telling it, but to pinpoint my situation in one go from that?

Arvan. Are you a mind reader instead of a doctor?

“Well, that, um… How…”

“I thought it made sense that you decided to stay in the castle to get that reward. That man is a monster hunter, so he could guarantee your safety even if you left the castle. Yet you chose to stay here, so I’m curious what kind of reward it is to be worth that.”

The reward is indeed special. It’s my life.

“It’s really important to me.”

“Yeah. I thought so.”

“But that’s not the only reason I’m staying.”

I grabbed Arvan’s hand.

Those delicate fingers that always took care of me meticulously. They don’t have to be as big as last night. It’s fine now because we can interlock our fingers.

“Because I haven’t given up, I hope you won’t give up either.”

“Huh?”

“I don’t want to lose either Callion or Arvan. I want both of you to stay with me. So I hope Arvan won’t give up on both his hometown people and me.”

This castle isn’t that important to me.

I have comrades I’ve shared feelings with, but I don’t cherish them enough to think I’d gladly give my life for them.

‘But they’re important people to Arvan.’

I want to cherish what my Arvan cherishes.

“Let’s protect this castle together.”
