“Grandmother!”
“Oh my, Jin!”
The monster crashed into the warehouse, causing the roof to collapse. Thanks to that, the monster was thrashing about inside, roaring. It bought us a little time. We need to get down quickly during this moment. I grabbed the shop owner grandmother’s hand and ran.
“Grooaar!”
The monster broke out of the warehouse by sheer force. It was not only big but fast too. The distance between us was closing rapidly. At this rate, we’ll be caught.
‘I need to at least help the shop owner grandmother escape. What object can I use for position reversal?’
As I was out of breath, my vision narrowed even though we were in an open space. I couldn’t see anything suitable to switch positions with the grandmother. I started to panic.
“Ugh!”
I tripped on something and rolled on the ground. Leaves scattered as I slid across the dirt.
“Grandmother, are you okay?”
“Ouch…”
My back felt hot, probably scraped badly, but this wasn’t the time to worry about that.
We need to escape from the monster, but the grandmother is slow.
I can’t carry her on my back and run.
There’s nothing noticeable to use the position reversal skill…
Ah. The monster is too close.
Thwack!
A long spear pierced the mouth of the monster as it was about to pounce on me and the grandmother.
“Ms. Jin! Get up quickly!”
The young man who thrust the spear into the monster’s mouth called out to me.
His face looked familiar. Was he the older brother of the boy I saved the day after Callion left? I accidentally gained a new skill while trying to save a child from drowning. He was so earnest in expressing his gratitude that it made me feel embarrassed.
He kept inviting me for meals, saying he wanted to treat his benefactor properly, but I kept refusing. I remember him leaving dejectedly in the end.
“Duck!”
A woman with a crossbow behind the young man shot an arrow into the monster’s eye. Then she grabbed the shop owner grandmother’s hand and helped her up.
“Ms. Jin, I’ll take the shop owner grandmother. Get up quickly!”
“Huff, okay.”
“Run fast! Another one is coming!”
The young man pulled the spear out of the monster’s mouth and threw it at the approaching monster.
Thud.
The spear pierced the monster’s head. It probably wouldn’t die from that, but it lost balance and fell. It would take some time for it to get up again.
As I tried to get up awkwardly, twisting my foot, the young man swiftly picked me up. He no longer had any weapons in his hands.
“Ms. Jin. Is your leg okay?”
“Huh? It’s fine…”
I was about to say it was fine, but then I saw my left knee dangling oddly.
‘When did it get twisted?’
There was a dent below my left knee, and my shin was darkly bruised. As if a giant beast had clawed at it.
I thought I had tripped on something, but it seems I fell because my leg was attacked by a monster.
“People are holding off the monsters in the northern square. Someone is slashing through monsters with incredible force, but there are too many…”
It must be Callion.
The man who was so careful not to draw attention is now at the forefront, cutting down monsters in front of everyone. Strangely, I suddenly felt like crying.
“I can’t escort you to the south. If they break through the path below the square, it’s over… Can you run?”
I’m not in any condition to run. But I have to say I can.
“Yes. I can run.”
“If you can just make it to the southern entrance, there will be people to help you.”
The young man set me down at the alley entrance and ran in the opposite direction.
‘How is he going to fight without a weapon in hand?’
I walked forward, leaning against the wall. My wobbling left leg moved on its own, not feeling like a part of my body.
‘I can’t go south anyway.’
I have no intention of evacuating. It’s not because it’s impossible to reach the southern entrance with this leg.
Today, you will save 1 person and die.
‘The shop owner grandmother was taken by that woman, so she must have reached the southern entrance first.’
If that’s the case, since I wasn’t the one who saved the shop owner grandmother, I can still save one more person.
“Aaaaargh!”
A scream came from the direction of the square. Along with the monster’s roar, there was a thud of something collapsing. Rumble. I could see the 3-story house at the end of the alley crumbling.
‘At this rate, they’ll come here.’
I need to save someone, but if I’m discovered here, someone might die trying to save me instead.
Should I hide, or should I crawl forward and draw aggro?
If I draw the monster’s attention and make it attack me, could they take down one more in the meantime?
It’s a reckless and useless thought.
As I became desperate, my mind seemed to become stupid too, unable to come up with any useful ideas.
This damn system tells me to save people but doesn’t tell me how to do it.
If I could come up with solutions right away in this absurd situation, I would have become a hero long ago!
‘Right. Fortification!’
At the sudden thought, a chill ran through my body, and strength returned to my fingertips.
Fortification.
I definitely had a skill that could create a shelter impervious to monster attacks.
Using that skill, I could not only protect people who haven’t evacuated yet, but also provide refuge for those currently facing off against monsters.
‘Skill window.’
As I called out internally, a semi-transparent cyan window appeared.
Position Reversal Lv.3
Screaming Lv.2
Virtue of the Sacrifice: Healing Lv.1
Fortification Lv.1
Charm Lv.1
When I clicked on Fortification, a ding sound rang out in warning.
[Condition 2. At least 1 ally must be within 10m radius
- Currently no allies nearby. Skill activation impossible]
Oh no. I forgot there were skill conditions.
