‘Callion. Where are you?’
Callion needs to be nearby for me to use Fortification.
Creating a shelter would be more effective than facing the monsters. I should have explained my skills to him beforehand.
No, if I had just held him back before he rushed out.
“Callion! Where are you?”
I called out to him at the top of my lungs. There was no answer.
I heard monster roars in the distance.
Beyond the northern palisade, I saw three monsters being diagonally slashed and falling.
Though I couldn’t see the person who cut them, the swordsmanship that could cut down multiple monsters at once was definitely Callion’s.
Then he must be over there.
I should go to where Callion is.
“Ugh…!”
As I tried to go toward Callion, my leg twisted in the opposite direction and I fell.
Damn. I can’t run. What should I do?
“Callion! Please come here!”
No answer.
I couldn’t sense him coming this way either.
Can he not hear my voice?
“Callion! Can’t you hear me?”
I clutched at my collar as I called his name.
The locket around my neck swayed.
Right. There was definitely a magic stone for sending emergency signals.
I opened the locket and took out the black magic stone earring.
Holding it in my hand, I called for Callion again.
If I call, he’ll come to me.
Then I can use the skill when he does.
“Callion!”
The magic stone in my fist emitted a white light.
I hope Callion receives my signal and comes.
Is this emergency signal strong enough to be noticed even during battle?
“Callion, please!”
“Would you stop screaming? It’s noisy. Can’t you see my brother is busy?”
In an instant, I was lifted by the scruff of my neck. My body floated and my vision flipped.
A large man easily picked me up.
It’s not Callion.
A splendid appearance like a red sun, completely out of place in this chaotic scene.
“…Senes?”
“If monsters are attacking, shouldn’t you be running away quickly? What are you doing here?”
I saw a glittering earring on Senes’ right ear as he frowned.
A black magic stone.
Callion definitely gave it to me, so why is Senes wearing it?
─ I hope you’ll accept it. And I also have something to tell you.
And I also.
Callion said “I also” back then.
Could it be that this magic stone earring wasn’t from Callion…
Was it something Senes intended to give me, but Callion brought it instead?
“Were you planning to crawl with your leg in this state?”
“No, it’s fine.”
“Don’t spout nonsense about being fine. Your thoughtless behavior isn’t new, but at this point, I’m starting to suspect you have a hobby of self-harm.”
“Wait, Senes! Don’t run!”
As Senes was about to dash towards the southern entrance while carrying me, I pushed against his chest and clicked the activation button on the skill window.
[Checking skill composition requirements]
Confirmed no monsters within a 10m radius.
Confirmed ally [Senes] standing by within a 10m radius.
No existing fortification currently.
All conditions for Fortification have been met.
Beginning shelter creation.
Woong. A green grid of light began to fill the air.
A grid formed a hemisphere shape centered on my position, creating a transparent membrane.
The created shelter is 10m in all directions. It’s not a space where many people can evacuate. But the most crucial aspect of this skill isn’t the size of the shelter.
It’s the additional effect.
“Gruk, gruk! Grwooooo!”
[Skill effect activated!]
Monsters cannot enter within 50m of the fortification in all directions.
Monsters that enter your domain are pushed outside the range.
When first casting the skill, there only needs to be no monsters within 10m, but once the fortification is created, monsters are pushed back 50m.
‘Even that should buy people time to evacuate.’
Monster cries were heard from the northern square. Monsters trying to leap in were flipped over and pushed back.
Their forms were clearly visible through the half-collapsed buildings at the end of the alley.
The monsters that got up growling looked around with glowing red eyes. Seeing the monsters flailing but unable to enter the range, Senes looked at me as if he had noticed something.
“Ju-in. Has your memory returned?”
“What?”
Senes doesn’t know at all that I can use skills. He doesn’t seem to see the system window either.
Is he just surprised that I exercised this ability without using a magic stone?
“Ju-in. You……”
Senes’ expression twisted strangely. That’s when it happened.
“Over there! Save us!”
There were people running towards us, screaming as if their last breath.
Their hair was disheveled and their clothes were in disarray, but I could recognize them at a glance. They were all wearing the same white uniform.
It was the castle’s investigators who had been trapped underground in the watchtower. They seemed to have escaped when the watchtower was destroyed by the monster attack, but their faces were covered in blood.
Judging by how they ran, they didn’t seem to be injured anywhere.
“A castle! There’s a ‘castle’ over there!”
“Move aside, move aside! It’s mine!”
Their crazed looks were unsettling.
Could they have escaped using the villagers as shields to divert the monsters’ attention?
“Kwaaaak!”
A monster that had been circling around, pushed by the shelter’s barrier, leaped out and devoured one of the approaching investigators.
The monster seemed to have been hidden by buildings, so the investigators hadn’t noticed it. Despite stumbling from the barrier’s push, the monster stubbornly swallowed the person.
“Aaaagh! Captain! Save me!”
“Damn it! Throw it!”
The captain investigator tore off a button from his uniform and threw it at the monster.
With a bang, it exploded right in front of the monster’s eyes, piercing its heart.
‘We took away all their weapons, but they had something like that hidden?’
But the problem wasn’t that the investigator had hidden a bomb. It was that the monster with a hole blown through its chest staggered to its feet, and then started to swell up larger and larger.
Like a balloon.
“What… is that?”
“Ju-in! Close your eyes!”
Senes quickly turned his body and pulled my head into his embrace.
