‘He’s trying to help me.’

I wondered if I looked troubled even from afar where the band was. The old man had devised a plan. By sitting among the musicians, I would be surrounded by other people, and gw wouldn’t be able to flirt or engage with the performer continuously.

The idea of rescuing a woman in distress must have been fueled by the fact that his last name was Zimmerman. Brigitta’s late husband had been the old man’s nephew.

The Zimmermans had a deep-seated hatred for Major Felkner. Although he hadn’t directly sent their eldest son to his death, he was the one who had enabled Brigitta, their former daughter-in-law, to thrive and wreak havoc in the mountain village. Not selling goods to the Zimmermans was just one of many petty acts of defiance she exhibited.

‘Is that bastard saying that after being with the woman who killed his husband?’

Just a moment ago, as the Major delivered his toast, I caught the old man murmuring curses from a couple of seats away. The residents at our table, including myself, had tried to distract him from hearing by clearing our throats or dropping our forks to create noise.

And now, the old man, who once relied on our help, was here assisting me.

I felt grateful, yet slightly embarrassed. If I followed him now, I might genuinely have to play the violin until Johann returned.

‘But Johann said not to…’

I wondered why Johann had told me not to.

In the past, I would have followed his instructions without question, but now that I couldn’t trust him, I found myself questioning whether I should still comply.

I didn’t know. Johann wasn’t here to answer my questions, and the only person who could rescue me from the persistent Major was this old man. So, I decided to follow him and escape from the Major, stepping forward obediently, but then the Major extended his arm to block my path.

“Rize Eineman, do you know how to play the violin?”

There was no reason to say no now, so I nodded.

“Then let’s hear you play.”

“Um…”

I was caught off guard by this unexpected turn of events.

“What’s going on?”

My true savior had appeared just in time. Johann came up from behind, wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me into his arms as he questioned the Major about his intentions.

The look in Jphann eyes, faced with a man who was being too familiar with his wife, was calm as usual but far colder than normal.

“Oh, Mr. Renner. It’s been a while. I heard your wife can play the violin, so I thought I might listen to her.”

Johann turned his gaze to me, his eyes asking if I had made such a claim. As soon as Johann returned, I silently gestured toward the old man, who was quietly making his exit with the violin. Seeing him ask that question made me feel certain there was a reason I shouldn’t be playing the violin, but Johann’s next words threw me back into confusion.

“I can play the violin too.”

Johann could play the violin? The Major looked just as surprised as I was.

“Unfortunately, Rize has forgotten all her sheet music, so she doesn’t have any pieces she can play properly, but I remember a few. If you’d like to hear, I can play for you anytime. However, I’m afraid today won’t work. So, if you’ll excuse us…”

As Johann turned to leave, still holding me close, the Major snickered.

“Are you running away? I suppose you must have your reasons.”

“My wife isn’t feeling well, so we plan to head back early.”

“I know. I’ve been worried about Rize getting thinner.”

How could someone who wished for me to grow thinner express concern? What was more troubling was that he referred to me so affectionately, as if I were his lover. If Johann misunderstood, it would be a disaster…

“And recently, she was quite ill. Do you know how my heart has burned to a crisp, from my sleeves to my fingertips, worrying about your wife?”

My heart dropped. That cunning man, with that one statement, made Johann believe I had feelings for him while threatening me that he could expose my comings and goings in his bedroom to Johann at any moment.

“What’s wrong with Rize today? I can call for a doctor from the bunker right away.”

“It’s nothing serious; I’m fine.”

The Major, who had been about to summon a subordinate, chuckled at Johann’s refusal. I couldn’t tell why he found it amusing.

“But it’s strange. The sickly Rize, who supposedly finds it difficult to attend parties, was just having a perfectly normal conversation with me a moment ago. She even managed to run away quite energetically.”

“Major Felkner.”

Johann, who had been glaring at the Major with icy eyes, finally opened his mouth, but the Major interrupted him.
