‘Does this mean we first met at that time? So, the place where we first met was a field hospital… in a war zone?’

How embarrassing to meet for the first time like this. Yet, that initial encounter is a memory I desperately want to reclaim, even if it means confronting my shame. I’m grateful that the memory continues instead of ending there.

Goodness. Johann’s eyes were wide with shock, visibly shaken even from a distance due to my reckless behavior. After staring at me blankly for a while, he finally spoke.

What would Johann’s first words to me have been?

With a mix of excitement and anxiety, I strained to listen to the Johann in my memory, but…

“Ugh!”

As my ring slipped off my left hand, my heart sank, pulling me back to reality. While I was lost in thought, the Major had taken my wedding ring.

“Please give it back.”

“Don’t treat me like a thief; I’ll return it.”

What was his intention? He held my wedding ring—the mark of being married—like it was a thorn in his side and began examining it closely. His gaze lingered particularly long on the inside…

“There’s an engraving inside the ring. What does it mean?”

The reason he asked about the meaning was that the engraving was only half-complete. It was inscribed in such a way that two rings needed to be combined for the words to be complete.

“Your face doesn’t look like you’d know what it says.”

He smirked as if he anticipated my ignorance. Was this yet another ploy to frame Johann?

“Probably just a name.”

“Johann, Rize, Renner. None of the spellings match any name. And it’s certainly not part of a wedding date.”

“Please stop speculating and just give me back the ring.”

The Major complied but not without a dirty method. He took my hand and slipped the ring back onto my finger himself, as if he was my husband. I tried to pull my hand away, but I couldn’t overcome his strength.

It seemed to amuse him even more, as he deliberately took his time putting the ring on while making lewd comments.

“Rize Eineman, do you know that the man who slipped this ring on your finger is different from the one who’s been sleeping with you every night?”

“Let go of this.”

“Oh, poor Rize, that man isn’t your husband. He’s a fraud pretending to be your husband.”

Wasn’t he the one who had said just a little while ago that Johann was a fraud who married me to hide his h–osexuality? Since he couldn’t find evidence, it seemed he decided to shift his tactics.

“You may have married Johann Renner, but he isn’t the real Johann Renner. The real Johann Renner is probably dead, perhaps at his hands. Or maybe he was fortunate enough to just die on his own. When that bombing occurred, you lost your memory, and a suitable man was conveniently killed, leaving his wife without recollection. It was a godsend opportunity, wasn’t it?”

This latest tale was utterly absurd. I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Why would a man who seems like an angel do something like that? I’m sure you’re thinking just that right now.”

“Just let go of my hand.”

“Well, he’s a criminal, after all.”

“This, ah….”

The Major pulled my hand sharply. My body was pulled toward him, and in that moment, we locked eyes just a hand’s breadth apart. A smirk crossed his lips.

“Do you want me to tell you what crime he committed?”

Desertion. I already knew that.

But it didn’t make sense to change one’s identity for such a minor offense. So, while I wanted to mock him for it, I couldn’t because if the word ‘desertion’ came from his lips, aimed at me, it could lead to trouble.

The anxiety I felt was evident in my eyes, which he seemed to relish as he stared at me with excitement, his expression twisted in a way that suggested he found my situation pitiful.

“No. I doubt your frail nerves could handle it. Right now you’re thoroughly brainwashed, you’d just label me a delusional lunatic. So let’s postpone that discussion.”

He didn’t let go of my hand, but he stopped pulling me. I quickly pulled back.

“Poor Johann Renner, to have his name and his wife taken from him. And poor Rize Eineman, now that your husband is dead, you’re no longer anyone’s wife.”

“Hah!”

But that was merely a ploy to catch me off guard. Suddenly, the Major seized my wrists and pulled me in. He laughed as I struggled to avoid being dragged onto the bed.

“Don’t worry. I’m not going to do that right now. I don’t want to cough like some old man gasping for air over you.”

“Then let me go right now.”

But he wouldn’t let me go. I wanted to threaten him with my gun, but with both my hands captured, I was powerless. He might not want to sleep with me, but it seemed he was willing to tangle our tongues as his lips drew closer to mine.

I swiftly turned my head to the side, only for his lips to brush against my ear. It was revolting. Just as I tried to pull away, he yanked me closer, whispering into my ear.

“Rize, you don’t believe me when I say your husband is a fake, do you?”

Of course not. Johann is the man in my memories, not some stranger who appeared when I lost my memories. Such nonsense isn’t even worth doubting.
