Mrs. Becker likely still had her son living in the basement, but officially, it was just the three of us.

“Mrs. Becker! It’s time for roll call!”

So now, once Mrs. Becker poked her head out the window, our building’s roll call would be complete. No matter how loudly the chief called, the second-floor window remained shut.

“W-where could she have gone at this hour?”

Time felt like it was stretching as my heart began to race. The curfew and roll call were not the end of our troubles. Now, if any neighbor had disappeared or behaved suspiciously, we would have to report it.

Otherwise, we might be scrutinized for neglecting our duties and face investigation and punishment.

But Mrs. Becker was nowhere to be found. She was always home at this hour, yet today, even with us calling out, she didn’t show her face. Having already recovered from the flu, she shouldn’t be bedridden.

…Could she have run away with her son?

Wasn’t she the kind of person who lived in constant fear of her son being discovered? With not only the military and police but also neighbors watching closely, it wouldn’t be surprising if the pressure led her to do something reckless.

‘If that’s the case, we’ll be dragged away for neglecting our surveillance.’

Investigation was scarier than punishment. If it was revealed that Johann was a deserter, it would all be over.

“I’ll go check.”

Johann shouted to the chief and stepped outside. I looked down at him from the stairs as he descended to the second floor.

“Mrs. Becker?”

Even when Johann knocked on the second-floor door and called out, there was still no response. I wondered if he should force the door open to check, but Johann continued down to the lower floor.

Then, instead of footsteps, the sound of a tin can being kicked echoed through the building.

Johann had deliberately kicked the pile of cans that Mrs. Becker had stacked near the stairs leading to the basement as an alarm.

“Mr. Renner? Wh-what’s going on…?”

When I heard her voice a moment later, I felt relieved. Perhaps the hinges had been well-oiled, for I didn’t hear the basement door open, but it seemed Mrs. Becker hadn’t heard the roll call while staying down there.

“Haah…”

All the tension in my trembling legs melted away. I heard Mrs. Becker rushed upstairs and opened the building door as I grabbed the staircase railing and sat down.

I suppose I, too, needed to take notes like the chief.

Black smoke rose from the bunker day after day. It was the smoke from burning the bodies of those who had died from the plague.

Though the mortality rate wasn’t very high, as long as it wasn’t zero, people were still dying. Moreover, this plague particularly affected younger individuals.

Each time I was dragged to the bunker, I would make the sign of the cross while watching the smoke rising from the incinerator in the corner of the farm. I wanted to pray for the souls of those unfortunate spirits who were forcibly taken away and would never see their families again.

“Ah, you’re here?”

The Major was always a source of regret for me. He hadn’t died.

“Ah, damn it. It’s standing.”

In the past, he was just a beast with a lustful mouth, but since that day, he had been aroused every time he saw me. Should I consider myself lucky that he didn’t act on it?

“Haah, Rize, this is embarrassing, isn’t it? You’re turning red all the way to the back of your neck, ugh…”

Not really. The way he expressed his desires towards other women was just as horrifying.

“Ugh, huff…”

Slap!

“Ugh!”

“Shut up, freckles. Make another sound, and I’ll cut your pay in half.”

He hadn’t changed in terms of his actions with Brigitta, but the method had shifted since that day.

Now, he covered that woman’s face with a blanket to hide it. He wouldn’t let her make any noise either, claiming it broke his immersion. It was about keeping the focus on the act as if he was imagining me instead of Brigitta.

“Damn it, tighten up. Rize will only take one at a time, so she won’t be as loose as you.”

That’s right. The Major used Brigitta’s body to satisfy his own desires about me.

He made me clean the large wall mirror opposite the bed, intending to put me right in front of it. And placing the mirror here was a filthy trick in itself. I couldn’t look away and had to watch the disgusting scene unfold. Since I was the same height as him, the mirror made it seem as if he was pushing me from behind.

‘Disgusting.’

The man reflected in the mirror was utterly filthy, yet the mirror itself was spotless. Still, I couldn’t escape from here.

“If you stop cleaning the mirror before I give you permission, I’ll drag you straight to Johann Renner.”

Because of the Major’s threats. I felt pathetic being led around by the same threats every time, but it was unavoidable. And since he wasn’t using that as an excuse to assault me, I could endure this much…

“Haah, Rize…”

The moment I made eye contact with him in the mirror, the Major struck Brigitta’s legs hard, releasing a moan of ecstasy. I almost vomited up the breakfast I had eaten.

“Come here.”

The Major, seeing me cover my mouth, became even more excited and reached out. I ignored him and continued wiping the clean mirror.

“I’m not going to attack you. I’ll just hold your hand. I just want to feel your skin with my hand and smell your scent with my nose, but you’re trembling. Hah, how enticing.”

Oh, God.

“Think about it. If you just lend me your hand, I’ll finish quickly, and your suffering will end sooner. Why are you being so stubborn? Ah, could it be that you don’t want me to c-m quickly? Are you enjoying this too?”

Oh, God, please.
