Instead, she suddenly uncrossed her arms and raised her hand to shoulder height, pausing as it trembled slightly. It seemed she was about to slap me but thought better of it.
She must be scared of the Major. If it got back to that mad dog, the next time she’d be hit just as hard or even harder than I had been.
“Rize Renner, do you think you’re so special?”
So, she decided to hit me with words instead. Her voice lowered as she scolded me, trying to keep it from reaching the Major’s ears, but it sounded like a snake hissing.
“Accept your position. You’re a poor country girl living with a poor teacher now, regardless of your wealthy upbringing. Why do you think your body is so precious? Does it mean nothing to you that others suffer because you refuse to sleep with that bastard? Do you think other people’s bodies are worthless? So you believe you can be treated like this without consequence?”
Brigitta, who had just momentarily revealed the bruises under the scarf tightly wrapped around her neck, spat her accusations at me like venom.
“You’re just as much of a devil as he is.”
What could possibly be the point of such an absurd accusation?
“If you had any conscience, you should be the one to sleep with the Major next time.”
It was an outrageous demand.
“Miss Ratz.”
I knew it was a ridiculous accusation, but just like Brigitta, I had reached my limit and couldn’t hold back.
“The person causing you pain isn’t me; it’s the Major. Your suffering comes from your foolish choices.”
Brigitta’s expression began to contort, but she kept her mouth shut.
“I never asked Miss Ratz to conspire with the Major to torment me. I never told you to sell yourself to him, either. That was all your own decision.”
I knew she wasn’t unaware of how unreasonable it was to place the blame on me.
“And yet, you’re still getting paid for it, aren’t you? But now, it seems you can barely endure the Major’s madness, no matter how much compensation you receive. Isn’t that also your choice? If the rumors about the Major being a pervert and a madman hadn’t spread throughout the village, I might have felt sorry for you. But you were the one who chose to take his hand knowing all of this.”
Brigitta’s face reddened with anger as if she was about to retort, but she merely swallowed hard and fell silent. I could guess what she had almost said.
“You definitely held hands with the Major to torment me at first, didn’t you?”
The look on her face instantly hardened, confirming my suspicion.
“But when you actually grabbed his hand, you found out he was using you to torment me instead.”
Like a dog. Like a b***h.
“Didn’t you realize on the first time that you were deceived by the Major?”
That was when he had pressed Brigitta down to force her into submission.
“You should have pulled away once you understood that it wasn’t a partnership but a one-sided exploitation.”
“…Who do you think you are to teach me?”
Though her pride was hurt, she couldn’t refute my point. Brigitta was clever and street-smart, but she lacked depth, making her thoughts all too transparent. I couldn’t understand why she hadn’t given up yet.
“Miss Ratz, has the Major found some leverage over you?”
“Do you think I’m you?”
It didn’t seem like a lie that she had no weaknesses. Perhaps she was simply clinging to a man who abused her out of selfishness. After all, she wasn’t in a position where she would starve without the Major’s support, unlike the other women.
“Then you could stop at any time, couldn’t you? Why do you insist on forcing me into the same situation as you, which has nothing to do with your suffering?”
I thought I understood her reason for pressuring me to sleep with the Major. It was likely a compulsion driven by her feelings rather than logic.
“I know you dislike me, Miss Ratz. That’s fine. I don’t like you either.”
“What?”
Why was she acting shocked when she already knew?
“But we are both suffering under the Major, so wouldn’t it be better for us to feel a sense of camaraderie instead of animosity? Honestly, I felt sympathy for you today…”
At that moment, Brigitta’s expression changed dramatically. Her pride had been brutally wounded. I finally understood why she had come to confront me—why she was pressuring me to sleep with the Major.
“Did my sympathy hurt your pride?”
“What are you talking about? Me? Hurt by you? Ha! You think I’d be pitied by someone like you?”
Brigitta may have dismissed my words, but deep down, she was acknowledging their truth.
“You want to be above me, but I’m treating you as an equal, while the Major sees you as inferior, and that’s what’s bruising your pride.”
Brigitta’s face turned bright red, and she clenched her fists. She probably wanted to hit me, realizing that words alone wouldn’t suffice.
“Don’t misunderstand. I don’t look down on you at all. Feeling sympathy isn’t a bad thing, is it?”
Even knowing that my candidness was further assaulting her fragile pride, I didn’t stop. The feelings I harbored weren’t malicious, after all.
