“Do you think it’s my fault that the Major is using Miss Ratz as a substitute because I’m not sleeping with him? You really have a simple mind. The wrongdoing lies with that vicious man who commits such acts in the first place. And once again, let me say, your suffering is due to your foolish choice to sell your body to that devil. So why should I make the same wrong choice as Miss Ratz?”
I was a fool to sympathize with this woman, thinking she was in the same predicament as myself. I had mistakenly treated her as a human, while she was merely a beast intent on chewing me up.
“I understand your desire for revenge. But your target is wrong. If you want revenge, go after Major Felkner instead. Now, if you’ll excuse me…”
Phew…
Having finished my words, I let out a long breath. It felt refreshing to finally say what had been pent up inside me for so long.
In truth, there were many more things I wanted to say, but I had to keep them inside because the ones making me feel suffocated were Johnan and Major Felkner. It was bittersweet that I could express myself to Brigitta but not to those two.
“Rize.”
But that was just how it had to be. I didn’t want to win Brigitta’s favor, and she couldn’t do me any harm…
“What if I tell Johann your secret?”
Since she couldn’t win verbally, she tried to intimidate me instead.
“Have you already forgotten that Major Felkner warned you not to touch his leverage?”
If she was to tell Johann that I was visiting the Major’s quarters, Brigitta would face retaliation from him. She wasn’t unaware of that, so why was she so brazen in her threats?
“As long as there’s no proof I told him, it’s fine. Who else knows you’ve been in the Major’s room while he was naked?”
The women who sold themselves to the Major, the soldiers who brought me there, and the officers who lived in the same area. There were at least over ten.
“Should I drop an anonymous letter into Johann’s classroom? If there’s no name, how would the Major know who did it?”
“I’ll, I’ll tell him. I’ll tell the Major what you did.”
Brigitta twisted her lips into a mocking smile as she saw me trembling with fear.
“Either way, by the time I’m punished by the Major, your husband won’t be in this world anymore. Don’t you think?”
If Johann learned the truth, he might recklessly fight the Major or even attempt to kill him and end up dead himself. I couldn’t guarantee that wouldn’t happen.
“Honestly, if things play out that way, the Major would probably thank me instead of being angry. After all, he could sleep with you without hesitation now that you’re finally a woman without a husband. I don’t understand why he won’t touch a married woman….”
As my fingers turned icy with fear, rage began to boil within me, heating my face.
“Listen well, Rize.”
Brigitta looked down at me, trembling with fear and anger, and spoke in a cruel tone that she softened with false kindness.
“If you don’t want your husband to die, then next time, you’ll have to lie beneath the Major and get choked instead of me.”
When I didn’t respond, Brigitta furrowed her brows and glared at me.
“This isn’t a suggestion. It’s an order.”
Who do you think you are? Just because you hang out with officers, do you think you’re some high-ranking official? Do you really think I’m trembling out of fear of you?
“So answer me.”
“If I end up sleeping with the Major….”
I glared at Brigitta, my eyes wide open, and forced out my trembling voice through clenched teeth.
“That wouldn’t be me succumbing to your command. It would be because I want something in return. The Major is eager to sleep with me, so he’d gladly pay whatever price I demand, even if it were a life.”
Perhaps not understanding my words, she raised her eyebrows in disbelief. She had always treated me like a fool, but now it was clear who the real fool was.
“Brigitta Ratz, that price is your life.”
Only then did her face go pale, but she quickly regained her color and scoffed as if she couldn’t believe what she’d just heard.
“Make sense. You can’t be this ignorant of the world. Do you think the Major is some kind of god? High-ranking officers can’t escape punishment for killing an innocent person.”
“Crimes can be manufactured.”
“What? Are you saying….”
“What about being a spy?”
Her face turned a ghostly shade of gray, and the color didn’t return easily. It was understandable.
The people of Eisenthal feared three main things these days. The first was dying from the plague, the second was having neighbors disappear and be taken away by the military, and the last was being accused of being spies for the Falklands.
Just a month ago, a nearby village had been mistaken for the bunker’s location and was devastated by enemy airstrikes. Since then, there hadn’t been any bombings in this area, but the locals lived in constant fear of when bombs might fall on their heads.
It was natural for civilians to worry about the bunker’s position leaking to the enemy just as much as the government did.
However, the overwhelming fear of death had spread like madness throughout the town, becoming an epidemic.
Now, even neighbors began to be viewed as potential traitors. Rather than resist, they volunteered to monitor each other, obsessively observing every little action and movement with a frightening thoroughness.
