“Please finish up your business quickly and let me go.”
At my blunt reply, the Major gave me a look that felt almost vulgar, but then he quickly corrected it, asking in a more neutral tone,
“So, where do you want to go on our date?”
A date?
“This isn’t a date.”
“You always argue, don’t you? You don’t know when to let things go. That guy might let you be for now, but if you come under me, I’ll make sure to fix you from the start.”
“That won’t happen.”
Since he didn’t like it, I was even more eager to argue back. But this time, he wasn’t angry; he smiled like he was enjoying it.
“Look at it this way. It means I’m thinking of keeping you around for good. Now, answer me—where do you want to go?”
Would it be so bad to just keep talking nonsense like this until he leaves?
“I’ll decide if you don’t answer before I count to three.”
The Major seemed to have figured me out.
“One.”
No matter where we went, being alone with the Major would be noticeable. It would be foolish to go somewhere secluded. Not only was I afraid of what might happen with him, but if we disappeared to some hidden place, what kind of rumors would start?
“Two.”
I needed to go somewhere where people wouldn’t mistake the Major and me for having an affair, somewhere with a crowd.
“One, the closest inn is…”
“Let’s go to the church.”
“The church?”
The Major chuckled and murmured that I had made a good choice. He opened the passenger side door.
“Get in, Lady Rize.”
“I’ll walk.”
If people saw me getting into the Major’s car, they’d surely jump to the wrong conclusions. The Major seemed to know exactly what I was thinking and smirked.
He slammed the passenger door shut, threw his cigarette on the ground, and stomped it out before heading to the driver’s seat. There was no reason for me to wait until he turned off the engine.
He wasn’t my husband, and certainly not my date. I started walking toward the church first, but after a few steps, the Major caught up and began walking beside me. I tried to distance myself, not wanting to appear too close, but no matter how fast or slow I walked, he matched my pace effortlessly.
I was being foolish in trying to create space between us.
I gave up and quickly started walking toward the church again. Just as I passed a house, I happened to run into an elderly man coming out. His eyes widened when he saw the man beside me wasn’t Johann but the infamous Major Felkner.
The Major would likely cause trouble if he saw, but I didn’t care and forced myself to put on a miserable expression. I needed to leave the impression that I was reluctantly dealing with him.
Fortunately, the old man glanced at me with pity but didn’t offer help and simply passed by. It was unavoidable. The Major was certainly glaring from beside me.
“Rize, good afternoon… Ah…”
I ran into another villager. I hoped they wouldn’t think anything strange about me and the Major, hoping that no odd rumors would start. I walked by with a stiff expression, but the person who would enjoy seeing me in trouble took a half-step toward me, closing the gap.
Startled, I tried to move away, but the Major reached out for me.
“Why are you crying? It’s annoying. Did you think I was going to break in and r-pe you?”
The Major tried to touch my swollen eyes. Had I brought the parasol for moments like this? In that instant, I unconsciously struck the Major’s wrist with the parasol’s handle, pushing him away with the sharp end aimed at his solar plexus. It seemed like the Major was caught off guard, and with the sudden force, he staggered back a step.
“Heh…”
I quickly hid the parasol behind my back to prevent him from taking it, but the Major didn’t try to take it. Instead, he stood still, staring at me and letting out a hollow laugh. His gaze was cold, so it didn’t seem like he was genuinely enjoying it.
“You’re cocky.”
“You started it, Major. I was just reacting.”
“Your retort is cocky too. But I’m letting it slide because you’re too pretty to find anywhere else, and because you’re the precious daughter of a good family, no matter where you go.”
It was nonsense, but since it meant he wasn’t going to retaliate over this incident, I took another step forward.
“That cockiness is ingrained in you. They say you can’t forget what’s in your bones even if you lose your memory, right? It means that even if you used a parasol to assault a soldier, you were from such a great family that you weren’t scared of it. If you were to go back and claim your inheritance from your parents, you wouldn’t be a poor woman anymore. You could use power to brush off commoners like me with a wave of your hand. So why hasn’t the man you claim as your husband done that?”
Again, the same tiresome accusation. I no longer even flinched at the slander.
“Don’t you want to meet your parents?”
This was the first time I had heard this. I stopped dead in my tracks.
‘Parents…?’
Does the Major know my parents? I stared at him, trying to figure out the answer, but he just smiled meaningfully and didn’t speak. Eventually, I became frustrated and asked first.
“Have you found them?”
