If even this prayer is not heard, then I have no faith.

In the end, the Major did follow me, but his lower body remained intact. When I turned onto the road that led home, he caught up with me and asked:

“Right now, I must seem like a r-pist to you, while that bastard appears to be a savior, doesn’t he?”

There was no need to respond, as it was an obvious truth.

“Just wait. Soon enough, I’ll save you, and you’ll thank me by kneeling in front of me, spreading your hole open with your own hands.”

“If Johann dies, I’ll die too. I won’t beg for my life from the man who killed my husband.”

“What are you talking about?”

The Major laughed dismissively, as though what I said was absurd.

“I’m not going to kill him. You are. You’ll report your husband, kill him with your own hands, and then come to me for comfort while crying and clinging to me.”

Who’s the one talking nonsense here? He continued with his absurd, improbable stories, laughing as though he had written another nonsense novel. It was as if he was happy after tormenting me like this.

“I had a lovely time on our date today, Lady Rize. See you again soon.”

When we reached my house, he didn’t attempt to grab me or follow me; instead, he walked back to his car. I couldn’t relax until the car was completely out of sight, so I waited outside, watching. After starting the car, he approached me again, saying something unsettling.

“You forgot our next date. After your cycle ends, I’ll come again. This time, I’ll pick the place. Your and that bastard’s bed. There’s no sweeter revenge than planting my child in your belly where he once had his fun.”

Was it a cruel joke, or a dark promise? I still couldn’t tell. He took a satisfied look at my pale face before getting into his car.

I watched as the car drove away, praying for it to be struck by a bomb, then rushed inside the house as soon as it disappeared from view.

I didn’t have to face Mrs. Becker. The cans on the stairs to the basement had all been cleared away. Perhaps while I was keeping the Major away from everyone, she moved her son somewhere else.

Finally, as I managed to escape one danger, I realized I was facing another.

‘When Johann comes, how much of this should I tell him?’

I couldn’t keep it all to myself. He would be curious about why we were suddenly being kicked out by Mrs. Becker, and the neighbors must have seen the Major come by.

‘How do I say enough without revealing everything? How do I keep Johann from wanting to kill the Major? And… what if the Major comes back in a week?’

One crisis after another. My life lately felt like it had no end to the danger. Is life supposed to be this complicated and difficult?

“Haa….”

I paused halfway up to the third floor, resting my head against the railing. The dizziness from just walking up the stairs was overwhelming, and my vision spun wildly, almost like it was burning up. There was no way I could come up with a clever plan in this condition.

‘Just a quick rest.’

As my vision cleared a bit, I stood up and dragged my feet toward the house. I was so exhausted. Johann would be gone for at least another two hours, so I decided to rest for a while before thinking of a solution.

Click, click.

Even though I was exhausted, I never forgot to lock all the door’s bolts once I entered. However, I had no energy to change, so I collapsed onto the sofa, still in my outdoor clothes. I had planned to lie there until the dizziness passed, but then…

Click. Clunk.

The sound of someone struggling with the lock made me open my eyes wide. I hadn’t heard any footsteps coming up the stairs. I must have fallen asleep for a moment.

‘Could it be the Major returning?’

If it was Johann, he would have used the key. The thought that the person knocking on the door was the Major froze me, but then…

“Rize.”

Hearing Johann’s voice brought my breath back. I had locked everything so securely that even with the key, he couldn’t get in. I had completely forgotten. It seemed like I had really fallen into a deep sleep.

“Wait a moment.”

I hadn’t realized it was already time for Johann to come home. Had I really slept that long? It felt like I just closed my eyes and opened them again. As I got up and walked toward the door, I glanced at the old clock hanging on the wall, confused.

‘It hasn’t even been 10 minutes.’

I really did just blink and open my eyes.

‘But why is Johann home already?’

As I opened the door, I looked at Johann, silently asking with my eyes, but he stared down at me with a more puzzled expression. His eyes scanned my body, which was trembling slightly.

“Ah…”

Only then did I realize I was still in my outdoor clothes. I hadn’t figured out what to say to him yet, but Johann seemed to have already figured out quite a lot.

“Did the Major come by?”

I answered before he could.

“Nothing happened.”

“Nothing happened, yet you dragged your sick body out to follow the Major?”

“Ah, that… I didn’t want to go…”

I tried to explain that I had no choice but to follow the Major after he found out that Mrs. Becker’s son was hiding. But the more I defended myself, the more uncomfortable I became.

Johann’s golden gaze turned bloodshot, and a sense of instinctive danger told me it might be murderous rage. Without thinking, I grabbed his wrist.
