“I went out, but nothing happened. The Major said that just seeing my face would calm him down, so he didn’t touch me.”

It wasn’t exactly something I should say to my husband, but I was desperate to explain that nothing had happened aside from showing my face.

“He wanted to talk, so I took him to the church. How could he do anything to me there? God was watching, and there were people around… I just heard the Major ranting about you, and then I came back. Really.”

But my pleading was useless. As I kept repeating that nothing happened, the redness in Johann’s eyes grew stronger, and even a hint of moisture began to form. The red anger was now mixed with a sense of betrayal, a betrayal directed at me. It felt so unjust.

“…I didn’t betray you.”

You’re the one who sinned, not me.

I swallowed the words I couldn’t say, stifled them, and stopped trying to defend myself.

My frustration with Johann grew, so I bit my lip and tried to turn to go to the bedroom to change.

But as soon as I turned, his arm wrapped around my waist, pulling me in, and his face buried itself in the back of my neck. His hand at my waist and the wet, trembling sighs escaping from his throat were all shaking.

“Rize.”

Johann’s voice came out strained, as if he was squeezing it from deep within him.

“You want me to comfort you with plausible lies, but I’ve never wanted you to lie to me just to ease my mind.”

“…How many times do I have to tell you nothing happened?”

“Would you still say that after reading this?”

He held out a thick envelope in front of my face. Now that I noticed, Johann had been holding it since before, but I hadn’t paid attention because I was so focused elsewhere.

“What is this?”

It was a suspicious letter. The envelope didn’t have a return address or name, just

‘To Johann Renner’ written on it.

“It looks like someone put it in the school mailbox during the break, and it got mixed up with other mail. I only received it a moment ago.”

Had he dropped everything, skipping class, and even forgetting to grab his jacket and hat just to rush home with this letter? What was written inside?

“…Who sent this?”

I asked, not opening the letter he had shoved into my hands. Instead of answering, Johann guided me to the sofa and told me something that made my hands holding the letter start trembling more.

“Sit down. You might faint if you stand and read it.”

His gentle words were terrifying. That meant the contents were shockingly difficult to handle.

I became even more afraid to open it. In fact, I already had a vague idea of what it might say.

I couldn’t bring myself to open the letter, and I sat trembling, holding it.

Johann sat across from me on the other side of the sofa, silently watching. His posture seemed calm on the outside, with his elbows resting on his knees, hands clasped in a prayer-like position under his chin.

However, his eyes, flickering with raw emotion, showed that he was struggling to control his feelings. This only made it harder for me to open the letter.

“Ha…”

The more afraid I became, the more Johann seemed unable to suppress his despair. He suddenly squeezed his eyes shut, his usual neat tie pulled down roughly, and his hand reached out toward me. I recoiled and quickly defended myself.

“Ah, no….”

“What are you denying? You’ll have to show me.”

Johann took the envelope from my hands, pulled out the letter, and shoved it back into my hands. With the letter now in front of me, I couldn’t avoid looking at it. Although the signature was absent at the end, the opening lines made it clear who had sent it.

[Last week, Rize sold her body to the Major and, in exchange, said she would frame me as a spy and have me killed. If I’m accused of being a spy and killed, your wife slept with the Major.]

Brigitta Ratz.

So, this was the letter Brigitta had planned to send to Johann. She must’ve gone to the school to give it to him, knowing her death was imminent, seeking revenge for something I didn’t even do.

“Why would I do something like that? You know who the real culprit is. But surely, you don’t believe that woman’s lies, do you?”

I had been worried about Brigitta’s false accusations, but reading them now, I realized just how flimsy they were. It seemed ridiculous, but I was relieved to know they didn’t hold much weight.

Then Johann took the first page and asked:

“I know this is a lie. But is everything in here another story she made up?”

The rest wasn’t a letter—it was a journal.

A detailed account of dates, locations, names of people involved, events, and conversations. Brigitta had kept meticulous records of everything that happened whenever she was called to the Major’s office. She must have been collecting weaknesses for a time when things went against her.

She wrote it all down, but strangely, it ended up in my hands.

The characters in the journal were me and the Major, and all the events took place in his bedroom. The dead Brigitta had slapped me across the face.

I could vividly remember the sting from when it happened, and the dizziness returned as if it was happening again. As I lost myself in the memory, I suddenly snapped out of it, just as I saw Johann’s eyes—his gaze piercing through me.

“This is all…”

All just that woman’s story. But as I gazed into Johann’s eyes, wondering if he’d fall for the lies, I couldn’t bring myself to say the words aloud.

Would Johann be deceived?
