“You might think I’m beautiful no matter how I look, but what about others? Don’t you think I’ll just seem pathetic in comparison?”

Moreover, Mrs. Hildebrandt was always perfectly and elegantly dressed from head to toe, so sitting across from her would only make me feel more shabby.

“I’m pale because I have no color in my face. It probably looks like…”

I was about to say ‘like a corpse,’ when Johann, looking down at me, suddenly leaned forward.

He slipped between the mirror and me and stole a kiss. Once, twice, then three times. Each time, the pressure of his lips grew stronger, as if sucking rather than kissing.

Eventually, his soft body pressed against mine, not letting go, and his lips parted mine, exploring inside with his tongue, licking my tender flesh. My face heated up in an instant.

Smack.

“Ah…”

Caught off guard by the intense kiss, I forgot what I had been doing and fell into it. Johann pulled back first, wiping the saliva off my lips with his thumb.

“Isn’t this enough color?”

As he spoke, my cheeks and lips reflected in the mirror were rosy, as though I had put on makeup. My lips, which he had sucked so fiercely, were swollen too… My face grew even hotter.

Between my legs too. I squeezed my inner thighs tightly, pressing my forehead against his chest.

“Johann… if you keep this up, I won’t want to leave.”

There was no need to be afraid of the fanatic’s gaze anymore. The room was well-soundproofed, and it was far from the other rooms.

Besides, now that I hadn’t seen any more of the Major’s erratic behavior, it didn’t feel as dirty anymore.

Johann had removed him from my thoughts, and now I couldn’t help but feel my heart race when I looked at him, just like when we fell in love again last spring. Naturally, I wanted him more than anything.

‘But where did the animalistic Johann go?’

The man who had just kissed me so lasciviously suddenly returned to his calm, priest-like demeanor and spoke firmly.

“I don’t want to go either, but I have to.”

He snatched the powder box from my hand, put it in the drawer, and stood me up. As he placed my hat on my head, he started repeating the same tiresome advice, which had been grating on my ears for days.

“You’re not to speak, except for greetings or brief answers. I’ll handle the questions.”

“I know.”

Even though I felt like Johann, who knows everything—especially the situation with the deserter—should be the one keeping quiet, I nodded in agreement.

We were invited to dinner at the Hildebrandt’s today. We couldn’t refuse the invitation from Mrs. Hildebrandt to have dinner with them, so we reluctantly accepted.

We quickly finished preparing and went downstairs to greet the principal and his wife, who were busy preparing dinner in the kitchen.

“Well then, we’ll be off.”

“Enjoy your dinner.”

“Have a wonderful meal and enjoy yourselves too.”

The principal and his wife, who didn’t know the situation, wished us well, saying it had been a while since we’d had a lavish meal and congratulated us.

But no matter how extravagant the food on the table, I couldn’t help but feel like it wouldn’t be easy to swallow.

Duck b****t with a wine sauce and fried trout with lemon—just as everyone had expected, these were dishes you wouldn’t see on the villagers’ tables. Even though I wasn’t hungry today, the sight and smell made my mouth water.

Of course, the pickled cabbage and potato dishes served as sides were something we could easily make ourselves if we had the ingredients, but the way they were presented was something else entirely.

The table of the second-in-command of the Supreme Command was not only filled with rare dishes. The plates, with patterns that seemed painstakingly hand-painted, were gleaming white. On either side of the plates, spoons and forks, all made of sparkling silver, lined up like sentinels.

‘Did they get this here, or did they bring it with them when they evacuated to the bunker?’

I was lost in thought when the dark red wine was poured into the crystal glass. I looked up and exchanged a grateful glance with the general, who was pouring the wine into my glass. He gave a curt nod in response, but his expression remained blunt.

As I had suspected, General Hildebrandt’s demeanor was intimidating. In fact, after our initial greeting at the table, he hadn’t said a word, which made him seem even more intimidating.

I almost wondered if his wife’s claim that he wanted to meet us was even true. The conversation at the table was entirely led by Mrs. Hildebrandt.

“Mrs. Renner, it’s a pleasure to see you again. How have you been feeling lately?”

“I’ve been feeling much better. Thank you for your concern.”

I had already heard from Johann that he had been using my poor health as an excuse to refuse invitations, so I made sure to answer accordingly.

“I was worried we might have forced you to come out when you were still unwell, but I’m relieved to hear you’re doing better. Please, don’t hesitate to let us know if you feel uncomfortable or need anything.”

“Yes, I will…”

“Your complexion looks poor.”

Suddenly, the general spoke, pointing out my pallor.

The heat that had flared up on my face thanks to Johann was no longer there, and my face wasn’t the rosy color it had been earlier.

‘Johann, this is exactly why I should have worn makeup.’
