I might have become quite skilled at being a homemaker. When I finished preparing the main dish and dessert, the bread was perfectly done.

“Wow… it split beautifully this time.”

I admired the bread as I took the iron pot out and opened the lid. I tore a small piece of the crispy crust to taste and was impressed again.

“I’m already getting hungry.”

However, I couldn’t eat just yet.

I quickly went to the bedroom while the bread cooled down. I changed out of the old work clothes I wore to see the major and into my best dress, which I usually reserved for church visits.

I then let down my hair, brushed it out, and braided it again. Although it wouldn’t be very visible under a hat, I re-did it twice because it wasn’t to my satisfaction. Not resting when I got home turned out to be a wise decision.

After getting dressed, I grabbed the lunch basket and headed out. By the time I reached the school gate, which was only a five-minute walk away, lunchtime had just started.

“Who is that?”

“Never seen her before.”

As I passed the fence and entered the building, groups of children eating or playing around glanced at me and whispered among themselves.

I had rushed here excited about Johann’s new job, but the unabashed, curious stares of the children made me nervous.

‘Is it okay for a wife to visit on the first day?’

But Johann had asked me to come. And if I didn’t, he would miss his lunch.

It was supposed to be a lunch I prepared early in the morning for Johann to take with him when he left for work, but because I stayed up late tending to things at home, I couldn’t wake up in time.

“I’ll bring it by lunchtime.”

When I had said I would bring lunch, Johann had insisted that the stale bread left from yesterday would be enough, but then he changed his mind when the major called me.

“I’ll prepare the dough, so if you happen to come home early, let’s have lunch together at the school.”

It seemed he wanted to make sure I made it back home safely.

‘In that case, I really should go in and show my face.’

I stepped into the school building with a smile, facing the curious eyes of the children.

“What brings you here?”

The children just nodded at me, but an adult—someone who did not just nod—asked me directly.

I must have inadvertently peeked into the principal’s office while looking for Johann. A middle-aged man with breadcrumbs in his mustache stood up from his desk where he was having lunch and approached.

“Ah, hello.”

Since he was Johann’s superior, I needed to make a good impression. I adjusted my wind-blown hat and greeted him with a smile.

“I’m here to see Mr. Renner.”

“The new writing teacher who started today?”

“Yes, that’s right.”

The principal pushed up his round glasses with a look of curiosity that seemed to question the presence of a visitor for a teacher on his first day.

“And what might be the reason…?”

“I’ve brought him lunch. Oh, that’s right.”

My goodness. How could I forget to introduce myself in my nervousness?

“My name is Rize Renner. I’m Mr. Renner’s wife.”

The principal’s eyes widened as much as his glasses. I wondered why he seemed so surprised.

In the past, I might have arrogantly assumed it was because I was strikingly beautiful. But now, with Major Felkner’s presence in this remote area, the reason might not be so simple.

‘Please, think kindly of me.’

I hoped my appearance seemed as respectable as possible while I smiled warmly like Johann.

The principal, momentarily silent as a student ran noisily down the corridor, finally gathered his thoughts and introduced himself.

“My name is Volker Werner. I am the principal of this school.”

“It’s an honor to meet you, Principal Werner.”

“I’m very pleased to meet you too, Mrs. Renner. Mr. Renner’s classroom is this way. Let me show you.”

“Oh, you needn’t trouble yourself. Please, finish your meal.”

“Not at all. I’m nearly done, and it’s only right that I show a new guest around my school.”

“Principal Werner, you are very kind. I’m delighted that my husband gets to work with such a gracious person.”

“Hehe, not at all. I’m more delighted that a savior like Mr. Renner has appeared.”

Johann’s classroom was located in a corner on the first floor of this small two-story building, which accommodated students from grades 1 through 10.

“Mr. Renner.”

The principal opened the classroom door. I saw Johann standing up from his desk by the window. It was exciting and somewhat strange to see the Johann I knew, dressed in a suit, at his workplace.

“I’ve brought a welcome guest.”

Johann’s eyes lit up with joy as he spotted me hidden behind the principal’s imposing figure. The principal, noticing our excited glances at each other, chuckled heartily and stepped aside to let me in.

“I’ve heard the Renners from Mullenbach are quite the handsome couple, but seeing you in person, you exceed the rumors. Enjoy your lunch.”

“Ah, Principal Werner.”

As he was about to leave after his flattering remark, I handed him a small gift—and bribe.

“Oh, what a treasure!”

As expected, the principal was delighted with the jar of homemade cream dessert I had laboriously stirred until my arm ached.

Finally, I exchanged a cheek kiss with Johann and took a moment to look around the classroom.
