Please Kill Me - Chapter 149
If Yekaterina stayed away for too long, Dmitry would scold her. Dmitry disliked it when Yekaterina was out of his sight, both inside and outside the house.
Perhaps it was because he had recently become the head of the household and felt insecure without a reliable presence.
— I don’t intend to confine you, Sister. It’s just… it’s true that having you in sight helps me feel at ease.
This was a euphemistic way of saying that Dmitry preferred Yekaterina to be nearby as a matter of comfort. It was more or less a request.
So Yekaterina often complied with such requests. Although she didn’t have a particularly strong affection for Dmitry, it was only reasonable to do such a small thing as a sister.
‘It’s time to go back.’
The only place she truly belongs is Offenbach.
Just as Yekaterina was about to leave the terrace, a woman was walking down the hallway towards it. If Yekaterina left, the quiet terrace would likely be taken over by this woman.
Yekaterina was prepared to pass by the woman without giving her a second thought and return to Dmitry.
If, at that moment, the woman had not stumbled on her high heels while passing by Yekaterina.
“…!”
Seeing the woman falter without even a scream, Yekaterina instinctively reached out to catch her. Their hands met, and their eyes locked at the closer distance.
Even though the woman was masked, Yekaterina could recognize her.
And, fortunately or unfortunately, the woman seemed to recognize Yekaterina as well.
“Miss….Yekaterina?”
In that instant, Yekaterina’s heart sank.
She hurriedly released the woman’s hand and turned her head. Having just managed to let go of her lingering feelings, she couldn’t afford to be caught now.
Besides, Olga probably wasn’t missing her too much.
“You must be…mistaken.”
Yekaterina steadied herself and responded coldly. Olga, however, urgently tried to speak again.
“What are you saying, Miss? It’s me, Olga! Don’t you remember?”
“I’m not sure. It seems you’ve mistaken me for someone else.”
Yekaterina nearly fled from the scene, but Olga relentlessly followed her. They went through several more struggles. Though it was mainly Yekaterina denying Olga’s advances.
“Miss! How can you do this to me? Do you have any idea how much I’ve missed you?”
Eventually, Olga threw aside her mask and cried out with a tear-streaked face.
“Didn’t you miss me at all? Was I the only one longing to see you? You might have had many maids, but for me, you were everything! Wahh! We used to be so close!”
“…Olga.”
“It’s been so dull without you! It’s all your fault! I even thought about going back to the elite force because of you, but you act like you don’t know anything!”
Olga began to cry uncontrollably, tears and snot flowing freely. Yekaterina, unable to leave Olga in such a state, felt she couldn’t be so heartless.
More than anything, the fact that Olga missed her touched Yekaterina deeply.
‘I didn’t think it was possible.’
In the end, she also removed her mask. Having never faced someone crying like this before, Yekaterina hesitated but then cautiously approached and embraced Olga.
“Wah, hic, wahh, you’re, hic, really, bad… How could you, hic, hic, do this to me… hic, how could you…”
Olga clung to Yekaterina, sobbing until she was utterly exhausted. Holding her close, Yekaterina felt for the first time in a long while how her eyes could sting with emotion.
* * *
After Olga had calmed down, she told Yekaterina in detail about the true state of Rostislav.
She shared stories about the household staff at Rostislav that Yekaterina could never have discovered through superficial investigations.
This included the missed snack times, the depressed kitchen, the gardener whose wall had grown higher than before, and the room that remained just as it was when Yekaterina had stayed there.
“…So, the last time I had one of Uncle Igor’s cakes was when you were still there. And Uncle Igor has decided to prepare for a return to the elite force with me.”
“I see.”
Yekaterina’s thoughts after hearing the whole story were as follows:
‘Sir Vasily must have had a hard time.’
She genuinely wanted to express her sympathy to Vasily. Despite her own feelings of longing, Olga and Igor were no easy people to deal with. Moreover, given their important roles in the household, it was probably not easy for them to simply accept the idea of returning to the elite force.
It was curious how such a stubborn knight ended up caught in such a whirlwind of change.
Yet, on the other hand, Yekaterina couldn’t help but feel a bit of schadenfreude. After all, it was Vasily who had relentlessly pursued her for sparring matches during her stay at Rostislav.
