Portrait of An Arrogant Master - Chapter 55
“The idea of inviting a diplomatic delegation might be somewhat burdensome.”
“That’s right. We wouldn’t want to give the impression that we’re trying to curry favor.”
Around the central long table, key figures were engaged in a heated discussion.
The topic causing them concern was the new Cathedral of Gadvich to be built in Laden.
Although Laden already had a cathedral, it was over 900 years old and in poor condition, and it was too small. The Emperor wanted to build a grand cathedral to match those of other nations and enhance the national prestige.
However, no matter how magnificent the cathedral was, Obelit lacked the artists capable of creating the artworks needed for such a grand structure.
Stained glass windows, beautiful sculptures, and visual representations of religious stories and teachings were crucial elements that contributed significantly to the cathedral’s value. After much deliberation, they decided to hire only a few Obelit artists and seek assistance from the Kingdom of Ciseina, known for its advanced artistic development and renowned masters.
“But Ciseina might use this opportunity to demand something else.”
The Kingdom of Ciseina was not an easy country to deal with.
“We are in a position of need, so what’s wrong with giving them an appropriate response?”
“What if they use this to demand ownership of the Ranthen Mountains? They have been eyeing the mines there for a while.”
The Ranthen Mountains were known for their diamond mines, which were considered the most perfect. The border between Obelit and Ciseina was drawn along the mountains, and there had already been previous conflicts over the mine ownership.
“If we gain something, we must give up something in return. Isn’t that only fair?”
Marquis Naissen spoke with a friendly demeanor, but there were rumors of his dealing with the Ciseina royal family for personal gain. His intention was to secure personal benefits by making a good impression on them.
Nicholas’s gaze toward Rubens, who had been listening silently, grew more intense, as if urging him to speak.
“I agree with Marquis Naissen’s view, but if the deal involves the Ranthen Mountains’ ownership, it would not be a satisfactory arrangement from Obelit’s perspective.”
Rubens finally spoke up.
“We should give them what is insignificant to us but necessary for them.”
“They are not fools. Why would they need something that is insignificant to us?”
Marquis Naissen countered, as if questioning the validity of the suggestion.
“We have several promising artists whom we cannot afford to nurture.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“I suggest sending these promising artists to study at the Ciseina Royal Academy and bringing back Ciseina’s artworks. They benefit by gaining talented individuals, and exhibiting domestic artworks in the Cathedral of Gadvich would be beneficial for our national strength.”
“But this will cause the art scene in Obelit to decline even further.”
His statement was accurate. It implied sending raw gems that, if properly cut and polished, could become beautiful jewels. However, it also showed a lack of understanding of the harsh realities of the Obelit art scene.
“It may be a loss in the short term, but in the long run, it will not be detrimental to us. After all, even the most talented artists in Obelit face limitations in achieving fame, so it would be a good opportunity for emerging artists.”
“Collecting a number of such emerging artists seems like an impractical task, though…”
Marquis Naissen spoke hesitantly, glancing around to gauge the reactions of those present. The other nobles also seemed to share his concerns.
“That is something our family will take responsibility for.”
A murmur spread across the table.
“If the Krygen family are entrusted with overseeing the construction of the cathedral, we will also handle persuading Ciseina and preparing the necessary conditions for them.”
“That is unacceptable! If a noble family, rather than the royal family, directs the construction of the cathedral, they might abuse their religious authority or impose unreasonable demands under the guise of support.”
Marquis Naissen stood up abruptly, clearly agitated.
“It infringes upon religious freedom and independence!”
“Then is there another solution?”
Rubens spoke firmly without hesitation.
“His Majesty would not permit the transfer of the Ranthen Mountains’ ownership.”
Mentioning the Emperor, Marquis Naissen fell silent, grinding his teeth in frustration.
Despite the Emperor’s vigilance over the growing influence of the Krygen family, he would not opt to transfer the diamond mines. Yet, no alternative solutions came to mind immediately.
“It is absolutely unacceptable! Duke Krygen is attempting to infringe upon religious authority!”
“Please maintain decorum.”
