“Why aren’t you wearing what I gave you?”
“…What?”
The mention of the wedding ring caught her off guard, and she was momentarily flustered by his shamelessness. But she quickly narrowed her eyes and glared at him.
“I threw it away.”
“…Did you now?”
His lips curved into a crooked smile. The brief grin on his handsome face seemed almost charming, but it was laced with something more.
“Then I’ll just have to buy you another one.”
“That’s not necessary…”
She began to protest.
As Suhyeon started to speak, Jeonghan’s voice overlapped with hers, cutting her off.
“Don’t even think about quitting to get out of this project. Your actions today are already suspicious enough, and there’s no need to add more fuel to the fire.”
“What did you just say?”
Suhyeon frowned, trying once again to pull her hand free. Without much effort, Jeonghan held her wrist in place, tilting his head closer, their faces now dangerously near.
“Even if you switch companies, be ready to cross paths with me again, wherever you go.”
“…!”
Suhyeon’s eyes widened in shock.
Jeonghan looked down at her fierce gaze with calmness.
‘Wherever you go, you’ll be entangled with me?’
He said in a low, menacing voice, finally letting go of her hand. Then, without another word, he turned and left the conference room before her.
As soon as he was gone, the tension in Suhyeon’s shoulders collapsed, leaving her feeling drained.
“…What.”
Suhyeon glared at the spot where he had disappeared, clenching her fist. Her heart was beating irregularly.
’I should have slapped him.’
Late regret washed over her.
As she looked down at her wrist, which had been tightly held, she heard a voice calling her.
“Manager Seol Suhyeon?”
When Suhyeon raised her head, Jung Hyunwoo was looking at her with a face that seemed to ask what she was doing not coming over.
“Ah, yes. I’m coming.”
Suhyeon quickly moved her steps.
As she exited the director’s office, she saw the elevator door that Jeonghan was in closing just then.
In that moment, Suhyeon’s gaze met Jeonghan’s, who had his hands stuffed into the pockets of his suit pants.
His dark brown eyes were staring at her.
…Thud.
The door seemed to be closing in slow motion, almost painfully slowly.
‘Why?’
Suhyeon bit her lips tightly. The moment she made eye contact with Do Jeonghan, she was overwhelmed by the feeling of being prey in front of a predator.
She was angry with herself for freezing like a herbivore.
“Director Do Jeonghan’s atmosphere is really something else.”
Suhyeon snapped back to reality at Jung Hyunwoo’s voice and looked at him.
He also seemed very tired, as if he had been tense. He had appeared excited about taking on a major project in the meeting room, but it seemed he was more nervous in front of Do Jeonghan than expected.
“Seems like it.”
Suhyeon replied, recalling the man who had just disappeared between the elevator doors.
At just his 30s, the man who had swallowed the throne of CheonkyungGroup exuded a presence that was different from ordinary people. The overwhelming aura he possessed, which she had found impossible to adapt to even after living in the same house for five years, was still there.
“Still, thanks to this, I get to have such an opportunity… It’s all thanks to you, Manager Seol Suhyeon.”
It seemed that the tension had eased a bit, as Jung Hyunwoo was now beaming with excitement.
“Thanks to me?”
Suhyeon slightly narrowed her brows, but Jung Hyunwoo said cheerfully,
“I think Director Do Jeong-han came here with the intention of specifically appointing you for this project from the beginning. Thanks to that, I’ve also gained a great opportunity. I should buy you a really nice meal!”
“No, it’s fine.”
Suhyeon’s slightly awkward smile went unnoticed by Jung Hyunwoo, who continued talking, but his words didn’t register in her ears.
The only voice echoing in her mind was Do Jeonghan’s from earlier.
‘Wherever you go, you’ll be entangled with me?’
The realization that he had deliberately chosen this company sent chills down her spine.
