Prey - Chapter 21
Who’s there?
Suhyeon was startled when she locked eyes with him, unaware that anyone else was nearby. And then she was surprised for another reason.
‘…I didn’t know there were men who looked like that.’
He was so handsome that it drew out a pure gasp. Even from a distance, the striking features and the dark navy suit he wore made it clear he was over 190 cm tall.
He was a man whose presence was extraordinary, even from afar.
Suhyeon found herself captivated by him.
His cold, lifeless eyes were fixed on her, yet strangely, she couldn’t move.
How long had she been held in his gaze?
It was only when he shifted his gaze, bringing the long cigarette to his lips, that she snapped out of her daze.
‘Ah, what am I doing?’
Suhyeon, belatedly realizing that she had been staring too intently at the stranger, quickly turned her body away.
As she hurriedly walked toward the entrance, her cheeks flushed slightly.
In this world, there really are people who can leave others frozen in place with just their gaze.
At that moment, Suhyeon realized this fact for the first time.
That evening, as she was preparing to leave work, Hyeongjin approached her.
“Suhyeon.”
Suhyeon turned her head at the sound of his voice while reaching for her bag. Hyeongjin stood before her with a tense expression.
“Yeah.”
As Suhyeon slung her bag over her shoulder, Hyeongjin opened his mouth with a nervous face.
“I’m sorry about earlier. If it’s okay, would you like to have dinner together tonight…?”
Just then, Suhyeon’s phone buzzed and vibrated.
Meeting Hyeongjin’s gaze briefly, she said,
“Oh, sorry.”
“It’s okay, go ahead and take it.”
Hyeongjin gestured for her to go ahead and stepped back as if to give her space.
Suhyeon also turned her body and answered the phone.
“This is Seol Suhyeon.”
Is this Suhyeon?
The voice of a middle-aged woman calling her in a familiar tone was laced with subtle urgency.
Suhyeon pulled the phone away from her ear and checked the number displayed on the screen again.
It’s an unknown number?
Bringing the phone back to her ear, Suhyeon asked,
“Who is this?”
I’m your second aunt. I’m Park In-ok’s younger sister.
At the mention of Park In-ok’s younger sister, Suhyeon’s expression stiffened.
Her voice suddenly turned frantic.
Suhyeon, you need to come home right now.
Suhyeon signaled to Hyeongjin with her eyes that the call might take a while and nodded her head to say goodbye.
Hyeongjin, trying to hide his disappointment, forced a smile and nodded back.
As soon as she stepped out of the office, Suhyeon coldly replied,
“Why should I?”
Why should you? There’s a big problem at your house right now!
“So?”
Her calm response was met with a huff of irritation on the other end of the phone.
You really don’t understand the situation, do you? Your mom has collapsed, and it’s chaos over there!
Suhyeon made a stunned expression in front of the elevator.
Hah, my mom?
She remembered that her mother had passed away four years ago. Park In-ok had been Seol
Hee-nam’s secretary was the woman who had been having an affair since before Suhyeon was born.
Currently, Park In-ok was living with the daughter of Seol Hee-nam, who was only two years younger than Suhyeon. In the house where her mother and she had lived.
The reason her mother had suddenly died four years ago was undoubtedly connected to those people. Her mother had always been weak and had chronic illnesses, but it was those people who had aggravated her condition.
Her mother had suffered mentally and physically for most of her life, all because of those demonic figures, Seol Hee-nam and Park In-ok.
“Why should I go there?”
Suhyeon said through gritted teeth.
“Oh my, Suhyeon, do you think I’m joking? Your father has caused such chaos at home that I can’t even explain it to you right now!”
The woman claiming to be her aunt shouted in frustration, as if she couldn’t recognize Suhyeon’s voice.
Suhyeon didn’t respond. She believed there was no value in answering.
Just as she was about to hang up, the woman’s voice came through again.
“You just got off work, right? Come right now! No matter what, just come, okay?”
The woman urged her insistently and hung up the phone first.
“……”
Suhyeon looked down at the disconnected call.
