Prey - Chapter 36
‘Has he finally returned home?’
Well, why would he stay here when he has that nice house?
As she relaxed, a sudden question popped into her mind.
‘Was he trying to meet Seol Hee-nam? Did he know Seol Hee-nam was coming?’
No way. How could it be difficult for the owner of Cheonkyung to find Seol Hee-nam?
Erasing the question that came to mind, Suhyeon rode the elevator alone, hoping he wouldn’t come looking for her again.
That man shakes her to her core every time she sees him.
“Then I’ll go in first.”
“Please be careful.”
Suhyeon greeted the staff member who spoke first, poking her head out from her desk.
“Is Manager Seol not going home?”
“There’s still work left.”
“It’s Friday, and you’re working late?”
Suhyeon smiled at her.
“I’ll be going soon. Don’t worry about me, just go home quickly.”
“Ah, okay. Then I’ll see you next week.”
The staff member bowed and left. In the now quiet office, only the sound of Suhyeon’s keyboard echoed.
Tap, tap-tap, tap-tap…
Suddenly, Suhyeon’s fingers stopped on the keyboard. The thoughts that kept resurfacing invaded her mind again.
‘There’s something I don’t know. Definitely…’
What could it be?
Suhyeon stared at the laptop screen with a frustrated expression, trying to recall a memory that felt shrouded in fog.
Her married life with Do Jeonghan, or rather, the moment she heard from Park In-ok that her mother was alive, felt faint and sporadic, possibly due to the shock.
During her marriage, she had to endure it all, stifling herself. She merely spread her legs when told to and smiled in front of people when instructed. All the while, she tried to avoid thinking.
It felt like the only way to survive.
The time spent enduring felt unclear in her memory.
So it was difficult to pinpoint what she didn’t know.
Upon reconsidering carefully, there were too many oddities in Do Jeonghan’s recent attitude to dismiss it simply as revenge.
‘If we’re talking about strangeness, it’s weird from the very start that this one-sided marriage was even successful.’
At that time, she thought he had deliberately chosen a family where she could say nothing even if she acted on her own. She could only be submissive.
But looking back now, there were numerous oddities.
Even if he just needed a wife he could manipulate at will, wouldn’t he be able to find a woman with much better conditions?
Considering Cheonkyung’s status and Do Jeonghan’s appearance, there were surely wealthy women who would jump at the chance despite all that.
‘Right… That in itself is strange. It doesn’t add up.’
Suhyeon rubbed her forehead as a headache began to set in, as if she were overloaded, and continued her thoughts.
During the divorce, with her mother passing away, she had lost everything to protect and made emotional judgments about the situation. But now that she thought about it, Do Jeonghan Definitely wasn’t that kind of person.
Throb.
As the headache intensified, Suhyeon tightly shut her eyes.
‘Enough. It’s all in the past now.’
Even if there were things that turned out differently from what she had known, it wouldn’t change anything now.
‘Don’t be swayed by what that man says.’
Even if Do Jeonghan was a bit less of a bad man than she had thought, what difference would it make at this point?
It was true that he had saved her when Seol Hee-nam came looking, but that didn’t mean she had any reason to be so shaken.
“Ha.”
Suhyeon covered her eyes with her hand, looking tired.
Drrrr.
“!”
Suddenly, her phone on the desk vibrated. Startled, Suhyeon’s gaze shot to the screen.
It was an unknown number.
Who could it be?
After a moment of hesitation, Suhyeon answered the phone.
“This is Seol Suhyeon.”
-Is this Suhyeon?
It was the voice of a young man.
Still unfamiliar, Suhyeon narrowed her eyes slightly and asked,
“Who is this?”
-It’s me, Woo-rim. Choi Woo-rim.
“Choi Woo-rim sunbae?”
Suhyeon’s voice rose slightly in surprise at the question.
Choi Woo-rim was the son of a wealthy family friend when Seol Hee-nam was doing well. They had shared a few family dinners together and were close at one time since they graduated from the same university.
After that, they lost touch, but she had run into him by chance at a social gathering during her marriage to Do Jeonghan. She heard he had just returned from studying abroad at that time.
This was the first contact she had received since their brief encounter.
-Yeah. It was really hard to find your number. Do you have time for dinner tonight? Do you have any plans?
