Prey - Chapter 5
Seol Suhyeon opened her eyes.
Slowly blinking, she looked at the still unfamiliar bedroom scenery and realized,
“Oh, I moved.”
It had been over a month since she received the favorable ruling in the trial.
She left all the legal paperwork to her lawyer and started looking for a new place.
She wanted to bury all the terrible memories and make a fresh start.
Seol Suhyeon washed her face in the bathroom inside the bedroom and came out to the living room.
With her hair loosely tied up, she wore an oversized oatmeal-colored T-shirt as pajamas.
Though she looked completely unadorned, her small, white face was filled with delicate
features, giving her an innocent charm.
Because she moved yesterday, the house was still in disarray.
She walked over to the island and brewed a strong espresso with the coffee machine.
“Living here, I’ll get used to it.”
Holding her coffee cup, Seol Suhyeon gazed out the window.
The living room’s large window overlooked a city view from a mixed-use apartment complex.
The scenery outside still felt unfamiliar.
But even strange places become familiar over time, just like her five years spent in that enormous mansion.
“What was that smile on that day?”
Seol Suhyeon’s eyes narrowed as she stared out the window.
At the moment everything ended, Do Jeonghan laughed.
Even the media, which he had tamed for a long time, mocked him for losing the lawsuit so completely, yet he smiled.
Why?
A month had passed since then, but the puzzling smile still lingered in Seol Suhyeon’s mind.
As if he had known it would turn out this way… that Do Jeonghan.
Beeep beep beep—
“!”
Startled by the sudden sound of the intercom in the shared entrance, Seol Suhyeon jumped while still holding her coffee cup.
“Who could it be?”
Seol Suhyeon, narrowing her eyebrows, walked to the intercom.
The only person who knew this address was the lawyer.
On the intercom screen, a man appeared, his face unfamiliar.
“Who are you?”
Is this Ms. Seol Suhyeon’s home? I’ve come to deliver flowers.
The man on the screen held up a bouquet.
‘Flower delivery? Is he the lawyer?’
As she opened the communal entrance of the building, Seol Suhyeon thought to herself that it seemed like the lawyer was here to congratulate her on winning the divorce lawsuit.
‘Well, he did look happy.’
The lawyer who won the trial was grinning the whole time. It goes without saying that his standing in the industry shot up after defeating Cheonkyung.
Seol Suhyeon, who had opened the front door, received the bouquet from the man who came up in the elevator.
“Thank you.”
She closed the door, placed the bouquet on the island bar, and made a phone call.
Yes, Ms.Seol Suhyeon.
“Did the lawyer send this?”
The lawyer responded with a hint of confusion in his voice.
Yes? What do you mean…?
“Oh, a bouquet has arrived. Didn’t you send it?”
I didn’t send anything. You might want to contact someone nearby.
Not him?
Seol Suhyeon felt slightly flustered. If it wasn’t the lawyer, then who could it be?
“I guess I should do that. I’m sorry.”
Haha. Not at all.
Perhaps still in high spirits from the victory, the lawyer ended the call with a cheerful laugh, even in the midst of a silly conversation.
Seol Suhyeon shifted her gaze to the bouquet.
Then who on earth sent such a fancy arrangement…?
The size of the large bouquet was impressive, and it seemed to be made up of
expensive-looking flowers.
Seol Suhyeon examined the bouquet closely. There was no ribbon or special message, and just as she was rummaging through it to see if there was a card…
…Huh?
In that moment, Seol Suhyeon’s hand froze.
A familiar ring box came into view.
“Why is this here…?”
Seol Suhyeon, looking at it with unease, swallowed hard and lifted the ring box.
A small note slipped out from underneath.
[I left this.]
As Seol Suhyeon read the note, her face stiffened.
Do Jeonghan
She immediately knew who had written the brief message.
It wasn’t just the neat handwriting that matched his appearance; it was the wedding ring inside the box.
‘I definitely left it at his place.’
Seol Suhyeon felt incredulous. The ring, set with an overwhelmingly large diamond, was something she wore only for significant occasions.
Thud!
Seol Suhyeon closed the box again and tossed it into the bouquet as if discarding it.
The marriage was supposed to be completely over the moment the trial concluded.
“How did he know about my new house…?”
Thinking about it, it made no sense. Only the lawyer and she knew about this place.
But then again, when Do Jeonghan sets his mind to something, what couldn’t he find out?
Narrowing her eyes and glaring at the ring box, Seol Suhyeon walked toward the trash can.
This worthless thing.
Just as she raised her hand to throw it forcefully into the trash, it stopped in mid-air.
