Prey - Chapter 54
– Did you come on purpose when I wasn’t around? You rascal! Don’t you move a muscle—I’m coming right now!
He really is as predictable as ever.
I silently laughed, holding the cigarette between my long, thick fingers.
“No need for that. I’ll come see you this evening.”
– Don’t talk nonsense! Stay right where you are and wait! Kim, get the car ready immediately and head to the company…
The call abruptly ended with Chairman Do hurriedly issuing orders.
“……”
I looked down at my phone, then slipped it into my pocket and took another deep drag from the cigarette filter.
At that moment, I heard voices coming from the direction of the emergency exit nearby.
My gaze shifted in that direction.
Unexpectedly, a familiar face was there.
…Seol Suhyeon.
Seol Suhyeon had come up to the rooftop with a man.
I smoked quietly for a moment, just watching them.
When I found out that Seol Hee-nam’s daughter, Seol Suhyeon, was working at Cheonkyung’s headquarters, I let out a brief, incredulous laugh at the sheer coincidence.
Of all the companies, Cheonkyung. And the headquarters, no less.
It wasn’t an impossible coincidence. Cheonkyung is the top company in the country, and anyone with the skills would want to work here.
So I knew Seol Suhyeon was working here, but…
‘I didn’t expect to meet her like this.’
I quietly gazed at Seol Suhyeon through the cloud of cigarette smoke that dispersed into the air.
Her milky white skin, her glossy black hair, her lips as red as a bright rose. And her eyes, dark as blackberries.
This wasn’t our first meeting. Though Seol Suhyeon wouldn’t remember that.
And Seol Suhyeon still wouldn’t know that they would meet again in a few days.
Seol Suhyeon, who had been standing in front of the male employee with a somewhat awkward expression, finally looked relieved only after the man received a call and hurriedly left.
…Not someone she’s seeing?
My brows furrowed slightly.
It didn’t matter. Whether she had a boyfriend or not wasn’t important. In the end, Seol Suhyeon would have no choice but to accept that proposal.
Suddenly, our eyes met.
“……”
I quietly looked at the woman who, before long, would become my wife.
Seol Suhyeon, the daughter of the man who killed my parents.
A few days later, as planned, I met Seol Suhyeon at a French restaurant in one of Cheonkyung Group’s chain hotels.
When she entered the private room, her eyes widened for a moment.
Perhaps because she had briefly seen me on the rooftop a few days ago, Seol Suhyeon looked startled at first, but she quickly composed herself and spoke.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Seol Suhyeon.”
“Sit down.”
I quietly stared at her as she sat across from me.
I had expected her to show up with a face that looked like the world had ended or to be incredibly angry, but she seemed surprisingly composed.
“Can I get straight to the point? You must know the purpose of this meeting.”
“Go ahead.”
Seol Suhyeon nodded obediently.
“If this marriage goes through, as promised, there will be a significant investment in HN. Then, we can overcome the current bankruptcy crisis.”
“Yes.”
“Ms. Seol Suhyeon, since you are marrying for that reason, you won’t have any say in this marriage.”
“Yes.”
Seol Suhyeon answered calmly, as if she understood. She was looking down at her teacup.
Her white face had always been pale to the point that you could see the veins, but she had never looked as pale as she did now.
It was almost doubtful whether there was blood flowing beneath her skin.
Keeping my gaze on her face, I said, “Can I interpret that as you being okay with it?”
Seol Suhyeon lifted her eyes from the teacup, and our gazes met.
“Yes. I understand that much.”
“……”
What is she thinking?
There was no joy, sadness, or resentment on her face. Her doll-like, beautiful face simply gazed back at me as if she knew everything.
Is she someone who hides her emotions well?
Or does she secretly wish for a marriage with a chaebol family?
From what I know, Seol Suhyeon had been living as if she had cut ties with Seol Hee-nam after returning to the country.
But you can never know what’s inside someone. Especially if she’s the daughter of that devilish man.
My gaze turned cold.
“Then I’ll proceed with that understanding.”
After concluding the purpose of our meeting, I checked my wristwatch. Then I stood up immediately. Seol Suhyeon’s gaze followed me as I rose.
“I’ve placed an order for the meal, so please enjoy it. I have another appointment, so I’ll be leaving first.”
Seol Suhyeon quietly stood up as well.
“I’ll see you next time.”
I briefly glanced at her face as she greeted me. There was no disappointment in her expression about being set up for a meeting while having another commitment.
Well, it would be more uncomfortable to have dinner together.
It was probably a relief for her.
I didn’t know if she would stay and have the meal, but that was not something I needed to concern myself with.
“Well then, see you next time.”
With those final words, I left the private room of the restaurant.
The wedding was grandly held.
Throughout the ceremony, Seol Hee-nam’s face was filled with joy as he greeted the stream of guests.
I let out a hidden smirk at the sight I had precisely expected.
Seol Hee-nam looked so happy, as if the effort of planning such an extravagant wedding, which didn’t even match his taste, was worth it.
