Prey - Chapter 60
“Shall we go home?”
At the assistant director’s words, I shifted my gaze from the window. He was watching me through the rearview mirror.
“Since you’ve been drinking, wouldn’t it be better to rest?”
“……”
After staring for a while, I let out a small laugh.
“That’s not like you, Assistant Director. You’ve been saying this since yesterday.”
“I apologize if I’ve been overstepping.”
The assistant director wasn’t the type to show many emotions, nor did he usually talk much. Still, since he had been saying similar things since yesterday, it seemed he was quite worried.
I shifted my gaze back out the window and said,
“Let’s go to the office.”
“Yes, Director.”
The assistant director answered without hesitation.
When I returned home late, Seol Suhyeon was standing in the hallway in front of the third-floor entrance.
She was wearing a long cardigan over a four-letter negligee that didn’t give off a particularly risqué vibe.
“You’re home.”
She greeted me, but her gaze was averted. Her slightly lowered eyes couldn’t hide the fact that she was facing someone she wanted to avoid.
Seeing that made me let out a short laugh.
If she was coming out to greet me, she should hide it better.
Or she shouldn’t come out at all.
“Are you still awake?”
“Yes.”
The woman replied and lifted her eyes again. But the brief moment our gazes met ended quickly, and she looked down again.
Looking at her downcast eyes, I said,
“You don’t need to wait until tomorrow. Just go to bed first.”
“……Yes.”
She answered quietly, but a sense of relief quickly spread across her face.
“I’ll come find you when I need you.”
“!”
Seol Suhyeon’s startled eyes shot straight at me. When I met her gaze directly,
her face turned pale.
I passed by Seol Suhyeon without any emotion.
Entering my room, I started unbuttoning my cufflinks in the dressing room, and a laugh escaped me again.
“I’ll come find you,”
I said.
Embracing Seol Suhyeon on a whim had been a mistake.
Let’s call yesterday a mistake.
So what about today?
My hand stopped moving as I was loosening my watch.
“……”
Was the distinct heat spreading through my body from the alcohol I had already sobered up from?
Or was it because of Seol Suhyeon, whom I had just faced?
My eyebrows twitched and tensed up.
Honestly, it wouldn’t matter either way. I could just check and find out.
I walked straight out of the dressing room. As I was about to open the door, I heard a knock from outside first.
Knock knock.
My hand, which was about to grab the doorknob, froze in mid-air.
“……”
I narrowed my eyes and stared at the doorknob before finally turning it.
Click.
Just like before, Seol Suhyeon stood there in a negligee with a cardigan draped over her.
Earlier, she had avoided my gaze, but this time she was looking straight into my eyes. Her dark eyes blinked with caution.
The woman spoke.
“Are you coming to my room tonight?”
“Why do you ask that?”
I asked back as I finished loosening my watch, as if it were something I had been doing before she came.
That wasn’t wrong. It was something I had been doing right before she arrived at this door.
Seol Suhyeon, who had been focusing on the watch, lifted her gaze again.
“I thought I might not be able to sleep, worrying about whether you’d come or not. If you could let me know what you’ll do tonight…”
Is it better to just get it over with quickly?
It seemed like she meant it that way, but seeing her blush and avoid my gaze afterward was a bit amusing.
How quickly her poker face crumbled.
After a short laugh, I lifted the woman’s face with one hand, who was nervously looking down.
“!”
When our eyes met, I could see turmoil in her gaze. Still, her desperate attempt to hide her expression was evident. She must be trying to maintain a calm demeanor out of pride.
Even if she was, as she said, a bride who was bought, she couldn’t lack all pride.
I looked down at her face as if appreciating it and said,
“Are you saying that if you’re worried about whether I’ll come or not, you’d rather I hold you now so you can at least sleep peacefully?”
At my slow question, the woman visibly panicked.
“T-That’s not what I meant…”
“What will you do?”
As I tilted my head, I could see the expression she hadn’t managed to hide. I liked the look of surprise that spread across her face.
Looking closely at the woman as she inhaled, I said,
“That’s how it sounds to me.”
I pulled Seol Suhyeon’s slender waist closer.
“Ah…!”
Thud.
After bringing her into the room and closing the door, her eyes wavered.
