The Answer to a Cheating (Ex)Husband is Remarriage - Chapter 13
***
The imperial palace was thrown into an uproar.
This was because the Second Prince’s engagement ceremony had been interrupted. The Empress gave the sudden deterioration of her health as the reason and canceled the engagement ball.
The Empress sent the invited nobles away and sternly warned them to keep their mouths shut.
But what kind of place was the imperial palace?
It’s a place where the walls have ears and rumors float through the very air.
“So what’s going to happen to the engagement?”
“I heard His Highness the Second Prince was dumped by his fiancée.”
“No way. What could he possibly lack? He’s royalty, handsome, with wealth and status in abundance.”
“You never know with men and women. Who can say? Maybe he’s not up to par at night.”
“Right. I heard their match rate was low, too. Just because he’s great during the day doesn’t mean he’s great at night, right?”
“True. He’s a prince during the day, but not necessarily at night, huh?”
“Oh, hey!”
Laughter rang out among the maids walking down the palace corridor.
“But, listen, this is really a secret—on the night of the engagement, His Highness the First Prince and…”
“Ahem, ahem!”
Just as one of the maids was about to start a new rumor, a young man appeared at the end of the corridor and cleared his throat loudly enough for everyone to hear. The maids, turning around, immediately fell silent in surprise.
“Lord Cyan!”
“Good morning.”
The young man, addressed as Lord Cyan, smiled warmly, his gentle gray eyes shining.
“By the way, were you perhaps talking about my lord?”
“O-Of course not.”
“My, we didn’t say a word about His Highness the First Prince.”
“Absolutely not!”
The maids protested, sweating nervously as they faced the handsome young man.
Of all people, to be caught by Cyan Evalder, the First Prince’s aide. The First Prince’s right hand was famous for being as cold and merciless in his work as his master.
“By the way, Lord Cyan, where are you off to so early in the morning?”
Trying to change the subject, one of the maids glanced toward a spot behind him.
“Oh my, you have company?”
Curiosity piqued, the maids’ eyes shifted behind Cyan. They hadn’t noticed, but he was with a woman whose face was concealed behind a fan.
However, Cyan shielded her with his own body and tilted his head.
“Company?”
He replied with an innocent smile, feigning ignorance. Catching on, the maids let out awkward laughs.
“Oh hoho, I must have been seeing things. Silly me, maybe I’m still not quite awake.”
“My, is that so.”
“Well then, Lord Cyan, please excuse us—we need to hurry and bring water for Her Majesty the Empress.”
The maids each bowed to Cyan and hurried off once he returned a brief nod.
“…Is it really alright to just let them go?”
After the maids’ shadows had disappeared, the woman standing behind Cyan spoke up.
“They might spread rumors to Her Majesty the Empress.”
Sylaria looked anxiously at the retreating maids.
It was only yesterday that Arendtert’s engagement ball was canceled midway through.
Yet already the maids of the Empress’s Palace were gossiping about the Second Prince’s engagement. It was as if the rumors had sprouted wings.
“It should be fine. They value their own lives.”
Cyan replied calmly, then guided Sylaria. He had come for her before dawn, saying it was the First Prince’s order.
The First Prince’s aide was not one for small talk. The two of them walked down the marble corridors in an awkward silence.
“This way, please.”
At last, Sylaria reached the entrance at the end of the long corridor. In front of the guest palace where she was staying, an elegantly curved four-wheeled carriage was waiting.
“His Highness is waiting for you inside the carriage.”
Cyan offered his arm and escorted Sylaria to the carriage. Since the sun had not yet risen, a pale fog blanketed everything.
“You’ll be going to the temple by this route.”
“The temple?”
“Yes. There, you will confirm your match rate with His Highness.”
Cyan whispered in a low voice. At his kind explanation, Sylaria’s lips parted slightly.
‘True, checking the match rate should come first.’
Yesterday, the First Prince had shown interest in Sylaria. But it was still too soon to draw him fully into her affairs.
If she wanted to break off her engagement with Arendtert, she would need to properly join hands with him.
Severing an engagement with a member of the imperial family is no easy matter.
