The Baby Who Regressed Refuses Childcare - Chapter 28
“Wow…”
Holding Roger’s hand, I stepped into the mansion’s main building, awestruck and wide mouthed.
The Abner family’s main residence, where the head of the family, Sharon Abner, stayed, was beyond anything I could have imagined, not just in the opulence of the walls and floors.
“Something is incredible…”
“Haha, do you like it? We haven’t even shown you your room yet.”
Perhaps three times the size of the east wing?
In the main building’s hall, there was a giant beast’s skin laid out, so huge it made me wonder how it was hunted.
On the walls were stuffed decorations of wolves, bears, and giant antlered deer.
Roger bent down to my eye level.
“The Duke enjoys hunting. Despite her busy schedule, she makes sure to venture to the polar regions at least once a year.”
“What’s that?”
I pointed to a stuffed animal hanging on the central corridor wall, leading up to the second floor.
“That’s a wolf from the northern Chantler mountains. Much larger and more aggressive than the average wolf.”
“Yikes, a wolf…”
“It seems you are frightened.”
I quickly shook my head.
“Not scared at all!”
Yet, I stealthily averted my eyes from the wolf’s stuffed figure.
Roger chuckled and then pointed in another direction.
It was a massive corridor extending to the right from the main hall.
“This way leads to the drawing rooms used for important guests and the Duke’s office.”
I nodded, looking at the sunlight streaming through the windows.
‘Then the Prince must have escaped from here last time.’
I later learned that the prince, along with Empress Karyn, had visited the Abner mansion that day due to Sharon Abner’s arms dealings targeting the royal palace.
‘It seems he left after getting an earful from the empress.’
Thinking of the Prince, who had gone pale at a mere gesture from a servant, I involuntarily frowned.
‘I wonder if he’s doing as I instructed?’
Feeling sympathy for his young age and vulnerability, I had offered some advice as naturally as possible.
But whether it truly helped him was uncertain.
‘…I don’t know. I’ve given my advice; the rest is up to him.’
It’s not my place to overly interfere in others’ affairs.
I have enough to worry about with my own life.
That had become my newly adopted motto in this life.
“Opposite side houses the banquet hall and a smaller dining area used by the family members. Would you like to visit it?”
Roger indicated the corridor across from us.
I nodded eagerly with a smile.
“Yes! I would love to….”
“Hey, Roger.”
Just then, a sharp voice called out from behind.
Both Roger and I turned, our eyes widening.
The main doors, which had been closed moments ago, were now wide open.
Behind them were Mielle and Soya, other servants in a restless state, and…
“Can’t you hear when you’re being called? What are you doing, not coming immediately?”
A man, stern-faced and strikingly similar to Sharon Abner, was leaning against the doorway.
“…Master Jaden.”
Roger released my hand and hurried toward the door.
I glanced down at my now empty hand before looking back toward Roger.
‘Is that Jaden?’
Jaden Abner.
The son of Sharon Abner and the sole heir to inherit the family upon her death.
‘The problem is, he hasn’t yet received the title of Viscount.’
As I pondered, Roger spoke to Jaden in a troubled tone.
“My apologies, young master. I didn’t hear you calling due to my poor hearing…”
Slap!
The next moment, a dull sound echoed as Roger’s head was sharply turned to the left.
His glasses, which were resting on the tip of his nose, flew off his face, landing far away.
I stood frozen, unable to believe what had just happened.
Slowly, blood began to form on Roger’s lips.
“Do you hear better now?”
A bitter voice echoed from across.
I looked at Jaden, skewed with a shocked expression.
He was dusting off his hand, as if slapping Roger had soiled it.
“If your hearing is failing, go see a healer or dig up a necromancer’s grave to fix it.”
“…I am sorry, young master.”
Jaden tapped Roger’s right shoulder with his index finger.
“Do I have to teach basic things in my own house?”
“It wasn’t my intention. I apologize…”
“Shut up. Go check who has arrived outside.”
Roger’s gaze shifted towards the door.
Jaden scowled as if annoyed.
“I’m trying to be a good son for once, I even volunteered to guide the guests. And here you are, making me furious by not coming quickly.”
With that, he turned swiftly and walked out the door.
Soon after, someone entered through that door.
“Lady Camilla, the Countess…”
“Roger, really now. How long do you intend to keep people waiting outside, hm?”
Her hair was voluminously styled upwards with numerous adornments.
The fabric of her dress wrapping her upper body looked expensive and fine at a glance.
Next to her flowing dress hem,
“Mother, really, Ruby is fine. There’s no need for you to be in such a hurry because of me.”
A young girl stood there with a lively expression.
