The Contract Wife Tries to Leave - Chapter 145
After a moment, he asked,
“Are you taking any medication?”
“…Sometimes a sleep aid, stomach medicine after meals… and painkillers for headaches.”
“That’s it? Nothing to help with your overall health?”
“No, not really…”
She answered in a small, hesitant voice, and for some reason, he sighed. Was she imagining things, or did his gaze seem strangely conflicted?
“I’ll have the physician prescribe you supplements for your health. Make sure you take them every single day without fail.”
“…”
Johanna simply nodded in silence.
“And from now on, you’ll eat your meals with me. All three meals, every day.”
“…What?”
But that demand left her no choice but to ask for clarification.
Eat three meals together?
…It was a baffling request. Why go through such trouble…?
“I’ll instruct the servants to prepare for us to have breakfast together starting tomorrow morning… For now, go back to your room and rest.”
“Um, I—”
“Nella, take her back.”
“Yes, Marquis!”
She had tried to voice a gentle protest, but he dismissed her before she could even finish her sentence. Nella led her back to her room, where maids buzzed around, tending to her as if she were gravely ill. It was just a bout of nausea, and she felt perfectly fine otherwise.
A few days later, Johanna began taking the health supplements, and Victoria, along with other physicians, came to conduct a comprehensive examination.
As she had expected, there was nothing physically wrong. The doctors suggested that her digestive issues and occasional reflux might be due to nerves. They advised her to relax and rest, as the root of the problem seemed to be psychological.
‘Psychological issues…’
She didn’t believe she had any.
As he had promised, Leonid began sharing three meals a day with Johanna. Gradually, this became a habit, and before long, it became routine for them to sleep in the same bed.
Previously, he would leave without hesitation after their nightly encounters, but ever since they started having breakfast together, he had stayed by her side throughout the night.
Johanna, used to waking up early despite her usual morning grumpiness, found it surprising that Leonid, who would normally grumble and linger in bed, had started getting up before her.
Now, she often found him sitting in the armchair, sipping tea and reading the morning paper, a scene that left her feeling strangely bemused.
That morning was no different. Johanna awoke later than usual. It was September 26th, 8:30 AM. The unusually bright sunlight streamed through the large window, filling the room with a warm glow.
She blinked, staring blankly at the ceiling washed in light before slowly coming to her senses. As she threw back the covers and sat up, a hand lightly brushed her cheek. Startled, she turned to find Leonid sitting against the headboard, dressed casually in a robe.
“Did you sleep well?”
“…Yes? Yes…”
“Go wash up. It’s time for breakfast.”
“Yes…”
She felt strange, a lingering sense of unfamiliarity in the air.
In truth, she had felt strange ever since the day she began having all three meals with Leonid. It made sense, though—living like this… it felt too much like they were a married couple.
Of course, this was just her impression; Leonid surely didn’t see it that way. He was simply managing the body of the Omega who would bear his heir.
So Johanna tried not to misunderstand. She kept any budding expectations firmly in check and suppressed her own feelings. Such things were pointless and unimportant.
When she came out after washing up, he was dressed and standing by the window. Johanna glanced at him as she went to the vanity to dry her hair. She quickly fixed herself up and changed into the clothes that Nella handed her. The next step, as always, was to sit down at the table where breakfast would be served.
As she turned toward the table, her eyes met Leonid’s. He was still standing by the window.
…How long had he been watching? Feeling uneasy, she tried to avert her gaze, but he tilted his head slightly.
“Come here.”
“…?”
Johanna cautiously moved closer to him. When she stopped a short distance away, he gestured toward the window. She followed his direction and looked outside. And then…
Her eyes widened at the sight that met her.
“The flowers…”
Six osmanthus trees had all bloomed at once. The vibrant orange blossoms swayed like waves in the breeze. The autumn sky was a deep blue, and the evergreen leaves of the osmanthus trees gleamed alongside the sunset-colored blooms.
“…They’re beautiful.”
“…”
“After breakfast, I want to take a closer look. I bet they smell wonderful too, don’t they?”
