The Contract Wife Tries to Leave - Chapter 21
Whenever she looked at him, Johanna’s heart would invariably race, and she would feel incredibly small and powerless.
To be sitting across from and conversing with someone she had only admired from afar… it felt almost surreal, like a dream.
“It wasn’t too hard to adjust. Not as much as I thought it would be.”
“Being quick to adapt is a strength. That’s good.”
His lips curved into a smooth smile. The contrast between his jet-black hair, which reflected a bluish tint, and his pale complexion gave his smile a strangely decadent feel.
“Why did you apply?”
“Because… I need the money.”
“And beyond that?”
“…Nothing else.”
She answered, but suddenly, a fragment of truth floated up from the sea of her consciousness.
Aside from needing the money to pay off her debts… perhaps, it was because the person involved was him. Maybe that was the real reason she was inclined towards this.
Emotions shouldn’t matter in this contract. Ironically.
“The contract period is one year. During that time, I need a dominant omega who can bear my heir.”
“…”
“As you may know, Miss Lucerne, it’s difficult for a hyper-dominant alpha like me to father children. The partner has to be a dominant omega for there to be any chance.”
“…”
“Miss Lucerne, you happen to be a dominant omega, and according to Dr. Oder, we are highly compatible… These are favorable conditions.”
He put the documents down with a light thud and grinned. It was a mischievous smile, making him look much younger than his actual age.
Johanna couldn’t take her eyes off his face.
“Today, we will conduct a few simple tests. My personal physicians will oversee them. If no abnormalities are found in you, we can consider the contract.”
He uncrossed his legs and stood up. Every movement was graceful and elegant, like an actor on stage.
“I’ve interviewed four dominant omegas so far, and you are the one I favor the most.”
His voice was so sweet that it was almost enchanting, even though he wasn’t releasing any pheromones.
* * *
In alpha and omega society, the term “Fata” is also known as “mate.” To explain further, it means a lifelong partner, a destined match, or a unique counterpart.
“You and the marquis have excellent compatibility. I believe you’d be his fata.”
“…Is it that significant?”
“Yes, it’s the highest score among the candidates we’ve tested so far.”
When an alpha and omega are fata, they feel an immediate, fated attraction at first sight. The pheromone compatibility between fata is said to be incredibly high, and during mating, they experience a profound sense of unity as if becoming one.
“Did you feel any different when you saw the marquis? Like feeling dazed as if you were drunk, or having all your senses focused on him?”
“No… I didn’t feel anything like that.”
“Hmm, I see.”
The examples given by the physician seemed to describe the typical reaction of an alpha and omega meeting their fata.
While Johanna’s heart did race and she was easily enchanted by Leonid’s voice and smile, it wasn’t to the extent of losing her senses.
So, no matter how good their pheromone compatibility was, they weren’t likely fata.
Such luck wouldn’t come her way.
“There are no issues with your reproductive functions. There should be no problems with conception. You haven’t experienced a heat cycle yet, correct?”
“Yes, I haven’t gone through one yet…”
“It’s rare for someone to manifest at a late age like Miss Lucerne. It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen such a case. Anyway, with such high scores, you should easily outcompete the others and secure the contract.”
The physician’s tone was sharp but not mocking. It was almost congratulatory.
It was something to be congratulated for. Signing this contract would bring an enormous amount of money. It was a fortune that could change her life. Where else could an unknown illustrator find such a sum?
So, she should think of it as luck… it would be better for her. Johanna clutched the hem of her skirt tightly with the hands resting on her knees.
