The Contract Wife Tries to Leave - Chapter 7
“How about manifesting as an omega now that you’re already like that? You could catch a rich alpha and change your fate.”
The first one sneered without hesitation, making a vulgar mockery. Johanna, blinking in shock as if hit on the head with a hammer, soon let out a hollow laugh.
Saying someone looked like an omega sometimes carried a sexual connotation.
Because it was a common prejudice that omegas were supposed to seduce alphas, they were thought to be sexy and seductive.
No matter where he learned such a crude expression, it was problematic in many ways for a child to behave like that already. Johanna glared at her younger cousins with narrow eyes.
‘Such arrogance for someone so young…’
It would be foolish to just endure an insult from a much younger cousin. She was about to open her mouth to retort.
“You bastard!”
Daniel, yelling loudly, lunged forward and grabbed his much taller cousin by the collar. Daniel’s fist swung through the air. And then,
Thwack!
The sound of skin tearing echoed.
“Daniel!”
Johanna, who had been frozen in shock, quickly regained her senses and tried to stop Daniel, but it was too late.
The cousin who was hit in the face by Daniel fought back with his fists, and soon the two were tangled in a brawl. It was a complete mess.
“What! Did I say anything wrong?”
“How dare you say such trashy things…! About muy sister!”
“Living like a beggar, how else can you repay debts and live properly if not by finding a good man?!”
“Who do you think you are! Once I become an adult, I’ll make sure my sister doesn’t suffer anymore!”
“Ugh, let go of me, you crazy… How are you strong…?”
Although the cousin was much bigger, Daniel’s innate strength was overwhelmingly stronger. It was natural since he was born as a dominant alpha.
The cousin seemed to realize this fact too late, furrowing his eyebrows before gradually changing to an enraged expression. It seemed unbelievable that he, much taller and bulkier, was overpowered by the small and skinny Daniel.
“Damn, just because you’re an alpha…”
Daniel sneered viciously at the words spat out by his cousin.
“Why? Do you feel inferior because you’re a beta? Is that why you make vulgar jokes about omegas?”
“Ugh…!”
The cousin, pinned under Daniel’s body, struggled while gritting his teeth. His face turned bright red, seemingly feeling ashamed as Daniel hit the mark.
Born without any distinct traits, betas were synonymous with ‘average’ or ‘ordinary.’ Among these beta males, there were quite a few who envied alpha males with superior physical abilities.
The traits of alphas and omegas are determined at birth or manifest between the ages of 14 and 18. There are rare cases where these traits manifest in the early twenties, but the probability is extremely low.
Therefore, even if parents hope for their child to be an alpha and put in all their efforts, or the child themselves tries hard, it is impossible to manifest as an alpha without the innate ‘trait factor.’
Perhaps because it is an unattainable ideal, betas, frustrated by the fact that they cannot become like the alphas they admire, often express their deep-seated inferiority in twisted ways. For instance, by making vulgar jokes about omegas, the ‘partners’ of alphas.
It was absurd that a cousin only fifteen years old was already doing this, but it seemed he had picked up bad influences somewhere. The fourteen-year-old must have been influenced by his older brother. Now it was clear that their mother had neglected their upbringing.
“Daniel, stop it now.”
“T-That’s right! Can’t you two stop immediately?! What are you doing so disrespectfully at a funeral?!”
As Johanna calmly tried to stop them, her aunt chimed in. Seeing that she didn’t defend her son, she seemed to realize that what he said was rude.
Their uncle stood at a distance, rubbing his forehead with his palm and sighing, while the second son was giggling for some reason. Both brothers were morally bankrupt.
The first son and Daniel glared at each other like mortal enemies before stepping apart. Johanna quickly brought Daniel to her side, gently cupping his face with both hands to examine him closely. His lower lip was slightly split, but otherwise, he seemed unharmed. It was a relief.
“Daniel, if something like this happens again, you must endure it next time.”
“But, sister…!”
“Thank you for standing up for me. But no matter how angry you get, you shouldn’t throw punches first. Do you understand?”
“Haa…”
Daniel sighed heavily as if trying to calm his anger, reluctantly nodding, and then he ruffled his platinum hair, so much like Johanna’s.
