- Chapter 28 - The Elf Who Came Home And Matters About Magic (Part 2)
[I-it’s not like I particularly wanted to sit on your lap, I just wanted to see the wand up close.]
“I don’t mind. This is normal for a married couple after all.”
[H-how obscene!]
If she already dislikes being on my lap, how would she tolerate further touching?
He wanted to try and ask her, but Verbena might scold him again, so he stopped and explained the Ruby Rod to Violette who was still wary towards him.
[This baton-like wand is a beginner’s wand and is the easiest to handle.]
The wand also had a control feature so that major spells could not be cast accidentally.
Hydrangea placed the wand on the floor so that Violette could see it better. She immediately moved closer and examined the Ruby Rod with a gaze brimming with curiosity.
[For beginner’s magic, teaching you blessings would be perfect.]
A Blessing is the lowest form of Recovery Magic. It has the power to heal minor ailments such as stomachaches and headaches.
[So we’re not learning light magic?]
“Although the tale about a famous mage and their apprentice mentions that they were taught light magic, it’s actually wrong.”
Technically, Light Magic is easier than casting blessings, that’s why it is considered as Magic geared towards beginners. However, it causes serious problems if used incorrectly.
“There was a year where there was a rise in incidents of people getting blinded because they created too much light. That incident led to an unspoken understanding that Light Magic should not be taught to people who are learning magic for the first time.”
[So there was such a thing.]
Violette reached for the wand, but a cat’s paws are not designed to grasp things so she could not pick it up.
[Uuuuu, uuuuuh!]
“Don’t force yourself. You can hold it once you turn back to human.”
[If you hadn’t bumped into me, then I would’ve been able to hold it.]
Technically, it was Violette who bumped into him, but he kept quiet to keep from further damaging her mood.
“What would you like to do? Would you like to start learning today?”
[No, we can’t.]
“Why not?”
[These cat paws are unable to grasp a pen.]
When Hydrangea looked at the table, he found that there was already a notebook, an inkwell, and a quill pen prepared.
It was probably prepared for her so she could write down what she’d learned.
“I can just write it for you while I teach.”
Then, I could teach Violette magic while she’s in cat form. It should be fun to have a cat right next to me.
[No, I want to be the one to write with my own hands.]
“I see. Then we’ll start at the next opportunity.”
Violette’s shoulders slumped when Hydrangea said that.
She must’ve wanted to hold that wand and learn magic right away. I feel sorry for her, but her curse couldn’t be broken that easily so there’s nothing we could do about it.
Seeing Violette upset ruined his mood as well.
However, he couldn’t think of anything to say to cheer her up. Then, he remembered the egg he received from the magic shop.
“I’ll give this to you as well.”
[My, how beautiful. I’ve never seen pearls this big before.]
“It’s not a pearl, it’s a mythical beast’s egg.”
Violette’s fur stood on end when she heard the unexpected answer.
[A mythical beast… you say?]
“Yes, that’s right.”
Mythical beasts are neither fairy nor spirit, but they are creatures who possess high intelligence.
These creatures are divided into classes, with dragons classified as first class. These creatures are believed to be mythical beings, as they have never been spotted in modern times. Meanwhile, the second class is composed of Fenrirs, Unicorns, and Griffins. These creatures are rare, but there have been sightings in recent times. Lastly, the third class includes Ilves, Snosora, and Tigraki.
Many mages make contracts with third class beasts and use them as familiars.
Mythical beasts are very loyal and wise, and are easier to command than fairies and spirits who are conceited.
[So this egg contains the child of a mythical beast, right?]
“Indeed. However, I’ve heard that it hasn’t hatched in 10 years, so there’s a possibility that it won’t hatch at all.”
[Then, I shall take responsibility and raise it until it hatches.]
Saying that, Violette sat on top of the egg and warmed it by covering it with her fluffy fur.
…crack!
Violette’s ears perked up when she heard a loud cracking sound.
…Crack, crack!
“Hey, the egg!”
[I-it’s breaking!]
The egg, which had not hatched for 10 years, began to break as soon as Violette began to warm it.
[Eh, do mythical beast eggs hatch this easily when they’re warmed?]
“I don’t know. I don’t specialize in mythical beasts.”
The egg cracked faster while they talked.
Just what kind of creature would hatch from this egg?
Hydrangea put up a barrier just in case. After all, it was a mythical beast egg that has not hatched in a decade, so it was necessary to exercise caution.
And then, the egg finally broke in two. And the creature that came out of it was—
