- Chapter 29 - The Infatuated Elf And Naming (Part 1)
The face that peeked out from the egg was a white kitten with black stripes.
The top part of the broken egg rested on top of its head like a hat, while the lower part of the egg which still contained the rest of its body gently rocked like a boat.
“It’s a cat.”
[Indeed, it is a cat.]
Violette said in agreement.
The mythical beast is a cat. The thought repeated inside Hydrangea’s mind as he tried to grasp what was in front of him.
“Umya!”
Hydrangea was transfixed by the cat’s adorable mythical beast form that he stopped thinking altogether and felt dizzy when he stood up.
Then, he went on all fours to take a closer look at the little creature. However, he got a little too close and the kitten swiped at him, scratching the tip of his nose.
“Myaa!”
“Ohhh!”
When it scratched Hydrangea, the kitten lost its balance and rolled over.
[Oh my.]
Violette approached it and lifted it from the bottom half of the eggshell by the scruff of its neck. She also removed the part of the shell cap that was still on top of its head.
A cat taking care of another cat. It was a scene straight out of Hydrangea’s fantasies.
The feline mythical beast was half Violette’s size. Its eyes were still not fully opened so it could not completely see yet.
When she set it on the floor, the kitten waddled around and snuggled under Violette’s abdomen. Perhaps feeling sleepy, it began to doze off.
“I could watch them forever.”
[Were you saying something?]
“No, it’s nothing.”
[Oh, but blood is dripping from your nose.]
“This is just a scratch.”
[But you’re bleeding from your nose.]
“!?”
Hydrangea only noticed that he was indeed having a nosebleed when it was pointed out to him.
It seems he got excited in front of the mythical beast upon seeing that it was a cat.
He stopped the bleeding with magic and healed the scratch on the tip of his nose.
[Are you alright?]
“Don’t worry about it.”
But deep inside, he was not really okay. He had never been surrounded by cats like this all his life, so it was difficult for him to keep himself from losing his mind.
[Still, I was really surprised. You would think that this kitten is an ordinary cat at first glance even though it is a mythical beast.]
“It’s probably… an Ilves. Though, its tail is too thin to be a wildcat. Besides, its markings are different.”
A wildcat is a cat-like creature which belongs to the family felidae that grows to about one and a half meters long and has pure white fur with black spots. They live in snowy areas and prefer to feed on the nectar of flowers, and its long, thick tail and friendliness are its most distinctive features.
On the other hand, their mythical beast counterparts are hatched from eggs and have stripes. Their distinctive tails are also different from ordinary wildcats.
“If I recall correctly, there is a reference about felid mythical beasts. “Mythical Beasts Throughout My Life” by Marius Lichtenberger, volume 7.”
When he mumbled the author name and book title, a book flew off one of the shelves and landed on Hydrangea’s hands. When he sat on the chair and began to read, Violette hopped onto the armrest to look at the book as well, but…
“Myaa! Myaa!”
[Oh my, my.]
The kitten cried out for Violette who had left its side.
“Looks like it doesn’t like being left alone.”
[It can’t be helped.]
Violette went down to the floor and the kitten immediately waddled over, happily meowing as it huddled close to her again.
[Is this what they call imprinting?]
“Who knows? Not everything is known about how mythical creatures live around the world.”
But what they did know was that the kitten was fond of Violette and was cold towards Hydrangea.
As I thought, cats don’t seem to like me.
