- Chapter 34 - The Elf Comes Home To His Unfortunate Wife (Part 1)
The date was almost about to change by the time he had gone home.
The servants also seemed unable to rest either, as they had to wait for their master to return.
While reading through the documents that Heliotrope, the head butler, had sorted out for him, Hydrangea ate the sandwich prepared for him and washed it down with a cup of tea.
If Verbena, who had previously been in charge of his education, saw such a scene, she would have scolded him. However, he was so busy that he had barely any time to spare.
He received the usual report from Verbena in writing.
Today, Violette seemed to have spent her time reading a magic book in the basement in the morning and made plans to redecorate the mansion in the afternoon.
“A redecoration?” he asked Heliotrope.
“The Madam said that the mansion seemed a little dark, so she wanted to brighten up the guest rooms and the entrance.”
Certainly, the Laudense Ducal estate is dark. After all, the furniture and carpets have not been changed in a thousand years. Since the furniture and carpets had been enchanted to prevent deterioration, it was not necessary to change them every few years.
“The Madam seems knowledgeable about magic, doesn’t she?”
“Well, to some extent.”
The reason she decided to redecorate was because she noticed how the anti-deterioration magic was applied.
“So because she noticed that the anti-deterioration magic was not cast on the furniture and carpets but on the house itself, she thought it was a good idea to change it. Is my understanding correct?”
“Yes, that is correct.”
It seems Violette gathered the servants and asked them what kind of furniture, carpets, and curtains they would like and decided on the interior in a way that reflected their opinions.
“The Madam said that she would like to invite some carpet dealers, furniture makers, and cloth merchants at a later date. Is that alright with you?”
“Yes, go ahead. I’ll leave it to you.”
Those merchants would probably not approach Violette. But just to be safe, I should caution the servants to not let any men approach her.
“Also, the Madam asked me to pass on a message.”
“What about?”
“She wanted to talk with you once you came home.”
“Is she still even awake?”
“She also said that you could turn her invitation down if it was inconvenient for you.”
It’s already this late, but did she still want me to teach her magic?
“Are you going to refuse?” Heliotrope asked.
“No. it’s fine. I shall head to her room once I’m done reading these documents.”
“Very well, I shall inform her attendant.”
While eating a sandwich, he read the documents and signed the ones that needed his approval.
Hydrangea stretched his back after finishing his work and checked the time on his pocket watch.
An hour has already passed after the date has changed. I wonder if Violette is still awake? Hydrangea checked the crystal.
Immediately, the bed was shown on the crystal. Violette seemed to be reading a book by the light of a small, square hand lantern on the round table.
Pomeranian and Snow White were also lying beside her. The two were probably asleep if the gentle rise and fall of their bellies was anything to go by.
Violette was still awake even though the room was dark.
Hydrangea used his Transfer magic and went to Violette’s room. There was a loud scream the moment he appeared inside her room.
“Kyaaaaa~~~!!!!”
At the same time, a pillow came flying and directly hit Hydrangea in the face.
Hydrangea also yelled after the pillow fell with a plop.
“What are you doing!? It’s just me!”
“What do you mean!? Anybody would be surprised if you suddenly appeared like that!”
“You were the one who wanted to talk to me so I went. Why are you even giving me that attitude?”
“I did say that, but when visiting a lady’s room, you must first tell the attendant and wait outside!”
“That kind of etiquette is only applicable to unmarried women. Are you not my wife?”
“O-of course I am, but would you be calm if someone suddenly appeared in the dark in the middle of the night!?”
“…….”
She has a point, Hydrangea silently agreed.
