- Chapter 35 - The Elf Comes Home To His Unfortunate Wife (Part 2)
For Violette who was still not used to magic, it was only normal that she would not feel any mana presence. As he thought about it, Hydrangea reflected and felt sorry for what he did. But only in his mind, of course.
Despite their arguing, Pomeranian and Snow White remained asleep.
Violette appeared to be stifling a yawn, so he decided to move onto the main topic.
“Alright, what did you need?”
I know she wants to learn magic, but I would not teach her unless she asks me to. Hydrangea stood firm on this approach.
“Well, it’s just, I heard that you were going to work till late, so I just wanted to say something to thank you.”
“You wanted to thank me?”
“Yes. Thank you for working hard till late.”
Violette pouted and turned her face away.
“And…? That’s all?”
Taking a deep breath, Violette added,
“Please have a good night’s rest! There. Is that what you wanted to hear?”
“And…? Anything else?”
“No, that’s all.”
“……”
“What now?”
He thought she stayed awake to learn magic, but he was surprised by the unexpected purpose of her invitation.
“Everyone talks about you as if you were a superhuman who could do anything, but in my eyes, you are just another person. Please don’t skip meals or cut back on your sleep,” blinking innocently, Violette muttered in a small voice.
“What made you think that?”
“It’s because I saw your House’s family tree… and grandfather and father-in-law, they…”
I suppose she wanted to say that my grandfather and father died young.
Now that she mentions it, they both seemed to work late into the night and also had unbalanced diets.
Since they died prematurely due to their poor health, Hydrangea also had to watch out.
“Wouldn’t it be convenient if I passed away?”
“What do you mean?”
“When I’m gone, you will get an inheritance and you can live as you wish.”
“That’s not true. I am only able to live this comfortably because of you — and I’m very grateful for it, at least in my own way!”
Her unexpectedly admirable behavior threw him off guard.
At first, I thought Violette was a selfish, willful, and flashy woman.
But the real Violette turns out to be a rare woman who thinks about her husband.
If not for the curse, then she would probably be very popular.
“Such an unfortunate woman.”
“I’m unfortunate?”
“Indeed.”
Hydrangea reached his hand out to Violette and gently caressed her cheek.
The moment his fingertips brushed against her silky, vibrant skin, the light from a magic circle enveloped her.
And in the place of a beautiful woman, a beautiful cat with golden fur appeared.
Violette was surprised with the sudden contact and looked up at Hydrangea with her round eyes.
[Wh! C-could you not touch me!?]
“Aren’t you my wife? What’s wrong with touching you?”
[W-well, that’s true, but… Rather, what is it about me that is unfortunate?]
“You’re unfortunate because you got married to a man like me.”
As he said this, he stroked Violette’s cheek with the back of his fingers. Her fur bristled at the uncomfortable touch. Faced with the obvious rejection, Hydrangea pulled back.
“Go to sleep already.”
[I’m going to sleep till morning even if you don’t tell me!]
With that declaration, Violette curled up and began to sleep.
Such a cute sleeping position.
On the bed lay three beautiful, furry beasts known as Pomeranian, Snow White, and Violette.
Hydrangea also wanted to join them. Nevermind Pomeranian— to be able to sleep while surrounded by Violette and Snow White who were both cats was like a dream come true for him.
Although he had such a fantasy, the thought of Violette nagging in his ear all night long made him stop.
“Good night, my dear wife.”
Although he did not expect her to say it back, Violette graced him with an obligatory “Good night!” He was unable to contain his laughter and laughed aloud.
[Dear, what’s so fu—-]
Before she could even finish her angry rant, Hydrangea had already cast Transfer magic and disappeared.
Thus, their couple time promptly came to an end.
