- Chapter 14 - Hell Training from the Morning
“Good morning. Did you sleep well?”
His voice was soft, perhaps because he had just woken up.
Karden sat up. The bed sheet covering his body slid down, revealing his muscular upper body sculpted like a statue.
I was startled and raised my tail straight up. Thankfully, he was wearing pants to sleep.
Phew, that scared me.
Calming my pounding heart, I glared at him.
Karden looked at me while brushing back his messy bangs.
Under the pouring sunlight, his bronze upper body gleamed and flexed roughly.
“What are you looking at that startled you so much?”
“Your Grace, why are you sleeping naked?”
I bared my terrifying fangs and rolled my eyes at him.
Karden, on the contrary, smiled leisurely. Almost annoyingly so.
“What’s the problem? It’s my habit. If we’re talking about that, you’re not wearing clothes either, are you?”
“I’m a fox! I don’t need clothes because I have fur.”
“If it makes you uncomfortable, I’ll make sure to wear something next time.”
“Hmph, please be more careful in front of a lady from now on.”
I turned my head away sharply, like a prim and proper lady. Then I smoothed my tail fur with my front paws. It looked unkempt after sleeping all night.
After becoming a fox, I strangely became obsessed with the condition, shine, and moisture of my fur.
I habitually groomed my fur with my tongue or combed it with my front paws.
As I mindlessly groomed my fur, I was overwhelmed with self-loathing. I’ve really become a fox.
“Wait, Shushu.”
Karden came very close to me. Uncomfortably close.
His long, straight fingers boldly touched my fangs.
“You were grinding your teeth severely all night. Are your teeth itchy?”
“Kyaang! What are you doing? Let go!”
I turned my face this way and that, trying to avoid his touch. But Karden, seemingly unafraid of my teeth, carefully examined my dentition.
“Are you really okay?”
“Kyaang, I don’t grind my teeth.”
“Of course, you wouldn’t know if you’re grinding your teeth yourself.”
Ugh. How embarrassing. My soul is that of a lady, but here I am getting my dental health checked first thing in the morning!
It’s so humiliating I could almost cry.
Ugh. I will definitely get revenge for today’s humiliation. I’ll chew on your hands, for sure.
Unaware of my sharpening blade of revenge, Karden gently stroked my head.
“I’ll prepare something for you to chew on. Anyway, it’s good to see you energetic again.”
I was furious at the villain’s unnecessary meddling in my dental care, but I half gave up.
Karden got up from the bed, went to the bathroom, and came out after a quick wash.
Instead of his uniform, he was wearing a comfortable tunic shirt with a leather vest and leather pants. A plain sword was attached to his waist.
Is he going for morning training?
I wanted to jump nimbly off the bed, but the bed was too high for my short legs.
The bed was a canopy style with white curtains hanging from four posts. I firmly bit the edge of the curtain and slid down smoothly.
I rolled when landing on the carpet. Fortunately, the carpet and my fur were soft, so it didn’t hurt.
I trotted to my exclusive basket under the bed.
I should take a nap while Karden is doing his morning training. This is why being a baby fox is good. I’m busy enough eating, sleeping, and playing every day.
I lifted my right front paw to get into the basket.
But was the basket always this high?
It was too much for my short legs to get in one paw at a time. Then, maybe I could jump in all at once.
I stepped back a bit, put strength in my hind legs, and jumped vigorously.
Oops, I forgot how poor my jumping ability was.
My front paws touched the edge of the basket, and the large basket flipped over, covering my body.
Ah, I’m going to crash. I squeezed my eyes shut.
But after a few seconds, I felt nothing.
“What?”
I carefully opened my eyes to see Karden holding the basket. When did he get here?
I heard a ‘heh’ sound of someone trying to hold back laughter. Karden was covering his face with his large hand, trying not to laugh.
“Fluffball, you’re really clumsy.”
“No, I’m not. This was a mistake!”
Karden approached and picked me up.
“From today, you need morning training too. It’s troublesome if you can’t even get into the basket.”
“Why should I? I was going to sleep more.”
Exercise from the cold morning. I’ve lived my whole life only doing breathing exercises.
Even as a baby fox, my life routine hasn’t changed. I want to live lazily since I’ve been reincarnated as an animal anyway.
I flailed my front paws towards Karden, protesting with my whole body. But it didn’t work at all on the psychopathic villain who doesn’t understand others’ emotions.
Karden said with a satisfied smile.
“Hmm. I didn’t know you’d like it this much. Let’s go. To train.”
“Didn’t you hear me? I said I’m not going, I don’t want to! Kyaang!”
***
The morning sunlight was warm, but the air was cold.
It felt like my lungs would freeze every time I breathed in.
Every time I panted, white breath came out. My short legs were numb from running for too long. My small heart was pounding as if it would burst.
There was still snow piled up on the training ground, and some parts of the ground were frozen hard like ice.
So my paw pads hurt every time I ran, and I slipped and fell a few times.
My fluffy white fur was now dirty, covered in snow, ice, and dirt.
“I’ll never forgive you! Karden!”
Right now, I’m covered in dirt, shooting a curse-filled glare at Karden.
But Karden didn’t care at all and was swinging his sword on the training ground.
He doesn’t even think about what he did to me and just shamelessly trains.
That villain is definitely a devil.
To put such harsh hell training on me, a cute and lovable fluffball!
He pretended to be kind for a moment, but it was all fake.
Forcibly dragged to the knights’ training ground, I had to do hell training as Karden told me to.
Why do I have to jump over logs continuously, dig ice holes with my front paws, and run around the training ground in circles!
Did I come to an Olympic training center? I can’t take it anymore. I’ll show you the taste of a beast’s fangs!
“Shushu, are you okay?”
Just then, someone gently picked me up.
Who dares to interfere with me?
I bared my fangs threateningly, but when I turned around, it was Owen.
Owen’s hair was disheveled and he was breathing heavily, as if he had rushed here.
He carefully brushed off the snow and dirt on my body with his hands.
“Why are you covered in dirt like this, Shushu? Are you not feeling well?”
Seeing Owen asking so kindly, I was overwhelmed with sadness and resentment.
I wagged my tail like a helicopter towards Owen, welcoming him.
“Owen!”
When I called his name energetically, Owen froze for a moment. He looked at me with wide eyes, unable to believe it.
“Shushu, you can speak human language, were you a fox beastman?”
Owen crouched in front of me and asked questions quickly.
“Well, I woke up and found I could speak human language.”
“That’s great. Congratulations. I’m grateful to hear Shushu’s voice.”
Owen smiled gently with his eyes, genuinely happy for me.
Really, Owen’s smile is so comforting.
If there was a unicorn-like imaginary older brother who sincerely cared for his little sister, would he be like this?
Owen gently scratched the fur on my nape. His fingers were long, thin, and delicate, making the scratching feel really good.
“Ka, kaung.”
A sound of pleasure came out reflexively. I quickly covered my mouth in case Owen misunderstood.
Just then, a cold, low voice rang out.
“Shushu is in training, Sir Owen.”
Karden was glaring at Owen with a cold gaze, having appeared at some point.
No, I can’t understand why Karden is displeased. I’m the one who should be angry.
Owen straightened his posture and saluted Karden respectfully.
“Your Grace, you’re out for training. Good morning.”
“Is Sir Owen out for morning training as well?”
Karden’s gaze lingered on the sword in Owen’s right hand. Owen lowered his head shyly.
“Yes. I’m embarrassed to say, but I’ve been training because my swordsmanship is lacking.”
Karden eyed Owen suspiciously.
“I doubt your swordsmanship would be lacking, having served in the Royal Knights.”
“You flatter me. Since coming to this border defense unit, I’ve keenly felt that my skills are just a facade.”
Owen answered humbly.
Wait a minute, so Owen was a knight in the Royal Knights. He looks like a young master raised in a greenhouse. I guess you really shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.
The Royal Knights would be an honorable position for a knight, so why did he come to the dangerous border defense unit?
I was getting curious about Owen’s story when Karden suddenly strode over.
Karden stopped in front of Owen and reached out toward me. Then he ordered in an authoritative voice.
“Sir Owen, hand Shushu over to me.”
I knew Karden was tall and muscular, but compared to the slim and slender Owen, he looked huge like an evil villain.
“I’m afraid that would be difficult, Your Grace.”
