- Chapter 15 - Don't Fight, Wash Me Together Nicely
The two men were staring at each other, and a tense atmosphere flowed between them.
I thought Owen would be intimidated by Karden’s pressure, but he was facing him with a composed attitude.
Oh my, Owen. I see you in a new light. I thought you were an innocent and fragile young master.
“Are you daring to disobey?”
Karden frowned and glared at Owen with cold eyes.
Owen shook his head.
“I apologize if I seemed disloyal. I dare to speak because it seems Shushu is being trained too harshly. Isn’t it excessive training for a young fox?”
“That’s right. I’m a fox, so I don’t need to train.”
I enthusiastically agreed, grateful for Owen who understood me like a rice cake.
Karden looked at me as if he couldn’t believe it, then brushed his bangs back.
“Fine. We’ll end today’s training here.”
“Freedom!”
I wagged my fluffy tail vigorously in delight. Owen also smiled and bowed his head.
“Thank you, Your Grace.”
Owen smiled at me kindly.
“That’s good, Shushu.”
“Thank you for taking my side, Owen.”
I was in a good mood and tried to lick Owen’s hand with my tongue, but a large hand wrapped around my body and pulled me back sharply.
“Kyaang?”
Karden was holding me in his arms, having approached without me noticing. He looked down at me with a cold gaze, his brow furrowed.
“Shushu, you shouldn’t lick people carelessly.”
I was the one who couldn’t believe Karden’s attitude, like a teacher scolding a student.
What does it matter who I lick?
Karden spoke in a low voice near my ear.
“You have healing power. You need to be careful not to let your ability be known.”
“That may be true, but…”
As annoying as it was, I couldn’t argue with Karden’s words. Karden gently stroked the nape of my neck.
“Now let’s go eat. Today we’ll visit the dining hall used by the soldiers.”
“Kyu? The dining hall?”
Owen looked at Karden with a slightly surprised expression.
“Your Grace, did you say you’re going to the dining hall?”
“Yes. Is something wrong?”
Owen hurriedly shook his head and straightened his posture.
“Ah, no. I heard you usually dine at the mansion. That’s why I asked.”
“Occasionally, I visit to boost the soldiers’ morale. Sir Owen, you come along too.”
“Yes, understood.”
Karden took me toward the building where the knights and soldiers resided.
Behind the knights’ training ground, there were several buildings. Among them, a single-story building served as the dining hall and rest area for knights and soldiers.
Before going to the dining hall, Karden stopped at a well where hands could be washed. It was a well that used a hand pump to draw water.
Karden moved the pump to fill a brass container with water, then crouched down, bending his large frame.
He gently took my small paw and started wiping off the dirt with a handkerchief dampened with water. I whined, feeling embarrassed.
“I’ll wash my paws myself. It’s burdensome, so please stop.”
Just then, Owen stepped forward, rolling up his sleeves.
“Your Grace, let me do this.”
“No. I’ll do it.”
In the midst of a tense atmosphere, the two men began a fierce argument.
To think that a Grand Duke and a knight would be having a battle of nerves over who gets to wash my paws. This could take all day. I guess I have to step in.
Standing firmly on all fours, I bravely shouted.
“Kyaang! Both of you, stop it!”
Karden and Owen both looked at me at my cry. I stood up straight, putting strength in my hind legs.
I placed my left front paw on Karden’s hand and my right front paw on Owen’s hand. I looked at both of them alternately with round eyes.
“Don’t fight, wash me together nicely.”
I lectured them seriously in my own way, but did they understand what I meant?
Karden and Owen’s expressions froze for a moment.
Soon, Owen smiled happily and looked at me as if he found me adorably cute.
“I’ll wash Shushu’s right paws.”
Owen took out a handkerchief and started wiping my right paws.
On the other hand, Karden remained still. He was frowning deeply, and his jaw was tightly clenched.
I pushed my soft, mochi-like paw towards Karden’s face.
“What are you doing? Hurry up and wash my paw.”
How long do I have to wait? I tapped my small paw on Karden’s hand, urging him.
It’s hard to keep balance standing like a meerkat, you know.
Karden silently started wiping my left front paw with a handkerchief.
Hmm, I’m pretty amazing, aren’t I? To receive such devoted care from two men in the middle.
“Your Grace, here you are!”
From afar, aide Maildra came running urgently, panting heavily.
Seeing Karden, Maildra spoke with an expression mixed with relief and reproach.
As Karden stood up, I quickly stepped back.
Phew, it’s fortunate Maildra came at the right time.
“Do you know how long I’ve been looking for you? You weren’t at the mansion, so I’ve been wandering around for a while.”
“What’s the matter, Maildra?”
Maildra calmed his breath and reported.
“Yes, the royal healers are expected to arrive in an hour. Shall we go now?”
“They’ve arrived earlier than expected. I’ll receive them after the meal.”
“Yes. I’ll have a meal prepared at the mansion.”
“No. Today we’ll eat at the dining hall.”
Maildra seemed flustered but immediately bowed his head.
While Karden and Maildra were talking, Owen finished cleaning my remaining paws.
I feel a bit sorry for making a young master from a noble house wash a fox’s paws.
I tried to lick his hand in gratitude, but then I remembered Karden’s scary face. So instead, I gently tapped my moist nose on the back of Owen’s hand.
“Thank you.”
Owen’s cheeks turned red again. Owen smiled and carefully handed me over to Karden.
Karden had a displeased expression but silently took me and held me.
Maildra smiled kindly towards Owen.
“Sir Owen, you were here too. Let’s go to the dining hall together.”
“Yes, understood. Mr. Aide.”
The three men entered the dining hall, surrounding me as if providing ironclad protection.
Why are they being so overprotective? We’re just going to the dining hall to eat.
The interior of the dining hall was large and spacious, with about twenty wooden tables, and around fifty soldiers were having breakfast.
They were eating while having leisurely conversations. When they noticed Karden entering the door, everyone was startled and stood up to salute in unison.
“Commander, you’ve arrived!”
“At ease. Eat comfortably.”
“Th-Thank you!”
The soldiers all greeted with tense expressions and then sat down to eat.
Unlike before, they weren’t eating comfortably, but rather gulping down their food quickly as if drinking it.
I felt sorry for the soldiers who were so tense. Even I would choke on my food if my boss visited while I was eating.
I glared slightly at Karden, who had no sense of consideration. Noticing my sharp gaze, Karden looked down at me.
“Shushu must be very hungry.”
Guided by Maildra, we sat at the central table. Karden put me on the table.
While Maildra and Owen went to get breakfast, I observed the atmosphere in the dining hall.
There was a serving counter in the dining hall, and soldiers who had finished their morning training were lining up waiting for their turn, creating a lively atmosphere.
I could feel the soldiers and knights who were eating breakfast kept glancing this way. They were intensely staring at us while eating bread and soup.
It’s a bit scary. Why are they all doing that?
As I tilted my head in confusion, a large soldier eating at the next table covered his mouth with his hand and trembled.
Another knight was looking at me with a fond fatherly smile, not even realizing soup was dripping from his spoon.
Ah, I just realized. They were all glancing because they were looking at me, not even eating their meals.
As expected, they were captivated by my cute appearance and fluffy tail fur.
Feeling smug, I raised my small nose and swished my luxurious tail fur.
Then Karden tapped my chin with his finger.
“Fluffball, why are you getting cocky? You have too little wariness towards people. That’s how you can’t survive in the wild.”
“Grrrr! I don’t care!”
I bared my fangs, dodging his finger this way and that. Then Karden made a ‘tsk’ expression and persistently tried to touch my small chin.
While Karden and I were bickering,
“Ah, Commander, what brings you to the dining hall?”
A large man appeared behind Karden. It was Captain Burke of the knights, holding a food tray.
He was in full armor and accompanied by five or six knights.
They smelled of unfamiliar soil. It wasn’t the smell of the castle. It seemed they had just returned from patrolling outside.
When Karden turned his head, the knights all saluted at once.
“Ah, Captain. Are you returning from an external patrol? Good work.”
“Thank you. Um…”
Burke trailed off for a moment and glanced at me. When the fierce and scary knight captain stared at me, my body trembled involuntarily.
I instinctively burrowed into Karden’s large hand.
“If it’s not too presumptuous, may we join you?”
