I didn’t understand what Karden was saying.
I tilted my head. Karden knelt down on one knee in front of me.
His blue eyes somehow looked sad. He stroked my back and whispered in a low voice.
“Shushu, this must be your homeland.”
“Kaang?”
He seems to be making a big misunderstanding. I was just possessing a fox’s body, this wasn’t my homeland.
Since I couldn’t honestly tell him the truth, I decided to stay quiet.
Karden took a moment to compose himself before continuing calmly.
“If you want, I’ll help you find your kind and send you back home.”
I was so surprised that all my fur stood on end.
I was about to say it was fine when I heard footsteps behind me. Maildra approached quickly with caution.
“Your Grace, I have something to report. It’s about the wall.”
“I understand. I’ll be there soon.”
Karden gently stroked my cheek while giving me a warning.
“I’ll be back soon. Don’t wander too far, stay here.”
Karden left the forest with Maildra. I blankly watched his retreating figure.
My mind went blank from the shock of his words.
It seems Karden misunderstands that I want to return to the fox clan.
I don’t even know how to survive in the snow!
Suddenly I felt anxious. I never even dreamed of becoming independent.
I’m living comfortably and being loved at the Northern Castle, how could I return to the harsh survival of the wild! Absolutely not!
Pak! Pak!
When I came to my senses, I was frantically digging at the snow with my front paws. I had unconsciously been digging snow holes out of anxiety and worry.
I sighed deeply looking at my front paws that had become dirty with soil.
“Kawung.”
First, let’s take a deep breath. Stay calm and think about what to do.
I need to let Karden know that I won’t return to the snowfield.
I’m just curious about the fox clan, I have no intention of returning to them!
Tutuk.
I turned around startled by the sudden presence.
It was just the sound of snow falling from a branch that couldn’t bear its weight.
“Haa, what a scare.”
As I was letting out a sigh of relief, I heard an unfamiliar presence.
I perked up my ears and turned toward the sound.
Through the birch trees, I could see a white figure standing still.
What slowly revealed itself through the trees was a large fox with silver fur.
Clear crystal-like silver eyes were staring intently at me.
“Kaang!”
I was so surprised I backed away while crying out.
The silver fox swished its luxuriant tail. A sudden wind blew making snowflakes dance, and in an instant, the silver fox transformed into a young man in his early twenties.
Tall and slender build, silver hair and silver eyes. He was a beautiful young man with pale skin and melancholic eyes.
To think a fox shapeshifter that I’d only heard about would appear here…
The fox shapeshifter young man was looking at me with an expression of shock. His hand reached out as if to grab me.
“Ruel….. You were alive. You’re safe……”
Does he know me? Ruel – that seemed to be the original name of the baby fox I possessed.
Meeting a fellow clan member here was surprising but also delightful. I had so many questions to ask the fox shapeshifter.
“Kaang, nice to meet you. Who are you? I…”
I happily hopped toward the fox shapeshifter, but instead, he stepped back.
“Don’t you remember? You were excommunicated from the Ulpes clan. You are now a dangerous being.”
The fox shapeshifter spoke coldly while looking down. His tone was cold, but his expression looked pained as if forcefully swallowing something.
“Wait, excommunicated? You mean I was driven out? What are you talking about?”
I couldn’t understand the fox shapeshifter’s words. How could they drive out such a cute baby fox, what wrong did it commit?
“You really don’t remember anything. Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten me too?”
His eyes widened as if greatly shocked that I couldn’t remember.
His beautiful brow furrowed deeply and his pale lips trembled slightly.
“I don’t remember anything. Except that, I was at the border region. Do you know about me? Was I a fox shapeshifter of the Ulpes clan? Why was I driven out?”
I had so many questions for him that I poured them out one-sidedly.
Having met a fox who held the only clues about me, I was desperate to grasp at any straw.
The fox shapeshifter seemed to have calmed his emotional turmoil and gradually became composed. His wavering eyes had somehow turned expressionless.
“I am Franz. Your… no, it doesn’t matter now. You lost your memories and were driven beyond the border according to the Ulpes clan’s laws.”
“Why? What crime did I commit?”
“Because you are an ominous being who will bring destruction to our clan.”
Franz, the fox shapeshifter, declared in an imposing voice like a judge pronouncing a sentence.
I couldn’t accept his words at all. How could such a ridiculous thing be true?
“I bring destruction to the fox shapeshifter clan? How could a mere baby fox have such power?”
I immediately protested, but Franz stared at me expressionlessly. His gaze stopped at the necklace around my neck.
It was the name-tag necklace that Betty had made for me.
The corners of Franz’s mouth twisted up in a cold smile.
“Shushu… Don’t tell me you’re being raised by humans. I can’t believe it. Have you forgotten even the pride of the Ulpes clan?”
When Franz looked at me with cold eyes, anger welled up inside me.
“I don’t want to hear that from clan members who abandoned me unilaterally. Why did you appear here? Did you come to check if I was dead?”
When I questioned him sharply, Franz lowered his head. Through his silver bangs, his expression looked like a wounded boy.
What’s with this reaction? He seems genuinely sorry.
Deep guilt was etched in Franz’s eyes. He let out a deep sigh. His white breath rose and scattered into the air.
“Yes, our clan abandoned you. We feared your power that grows by consuming magical energy.”
I stopped breathing for a moment. It was like being hit on the back of the head. My thoughts stopped and my head was spinning.
I knew I consumed magical energy, but to think I even grew from it. But what’s the problem with that power?
“You abandoned a child for such a reason?”
“Yes. The council of elders said your power would bring great harm to our clan.”
“My power causes great harm, why?”
“Decades ago, a fox with the same power as yours appeared and went berserk, trying to massacre the clan. Moreover, human slave traders hunted our Ulpes clan coveting that power. After that incident, we’ve been living scattered about.”
I was confused about how to understand and accept this shocking truth I was hearing for the first time.
“That’s impossible…”
Anger toward the Ulpes clan welled up, but at the same time, from a third person’s perspective rather than the baby fox’s, I could understand their decision.
They too must have had no choice but to abandon the young fox for their clan.
Perhaps it’s natural in the animal world where the weak are eaten and only the strong survive.
It must be their survival instinct to cast out beings that could threaten the clan’s survival.
So this is how I finally learned why the baby fox was abandoned.
Though my heart ached sharply, I tried not to show it.
Franz, who had been avoiding my gaze, lifted his head straight up. His silver eyes held desperate emotion.
“Our clan abandoned you… but I never abandoned you.”
“…What?”
Just then, a huge shadow slowly emerged behind Franz. The quiet forest air changed in an instant.
A presence with such powerful pressure that my whole body froze in fear.
A huge monster stood upright on two legs looking down at us. Its yellow eyes rolled around searching for prey.
Dozens of sharp teeth glinted and drool dripped from its long torn mouth.
Its drooping front paws had large, thick hooked claws.
It was a werewolf.
“W-why is a monster here…”
I was too shocked to continue speaking. I needed to move and run away right now, needed to alert Karden, but my short legs were frozen stiff.
Grrrr. The werewolf bared its sharp fangs and lunged at the fox shapeshifter before me.
It happened in an instant.
“Watch out!”
I swung my tail with all my might to create a snowstorm.
Please, let this attack work!
A large white snowstorm whirled up and blocked the werewolf’s vision.
The werewolf roared and flailed trying to escape the snowstorm.
Taking advantage of that moment, Franz quickly rushed toward the monster. When he waved his hand, dozens of sharp ice arrows shot from his fingertips.
Paak! The dozens of ice arrows struck precisely at the werewolf’s heart.
“Kraaak!”
The monster screamed and writhed in pain before disappearing into black ashes.
I thought he was an ordinary fox shapeshifter, but to think he could use ice as a weapon.
I watched blankly in shock.
Franz slowly lowered his outstretched hands while breathing heavily. He shouted angrily at me.
“Why are you standing there stupidly, run away quickly!”
