At that moment, a ferocious howl echoed behind me.
Grrrr.
It was an eerie sound that seemed to shake the birch forest.
A disgusting beast smell pierced my nose. I instinctively turned around.
A massive werewolf was glaring at me with bloodshot red eyes, revealing sharp fangs between its red lips.
It wasn’t just one that appeared. There was another monster.
Now there’s no time to escape. I looked up at the monster helplessly, giving up on everything.
Just as the werewolf’s huge claws were about to tear my small body to shreds.
“No!”
Everything went dark and a violent impact overwhelmed me.
Franz had appeared somehow, holding me in his arms as we rolled in the snow.
“Ugh…”
Blood was flowing from Franz’s forearm, probably grazed by the monster’s claws while protecting me.
“Kaang? Are you okay?”
Franz tried to barely raise himself up, but he collapsed back down as if his strength had left him.
“Get up quickly! We need to run!”
I bit his sleeve and struggled while whining, trying to help him up.
The blood flowing from his forearm wound was staining the snow red.
If only I could transform into a human now, I could help him escape.
Frustratingly, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t change into human form.
Why am I such a powerless fox who can’t even do such a simple thing?
I pulled on Franz’s sleeve with all my might while whimpering.
“Please, get up…”
Franz barely lifted his eyelids and stared at me blankly.
His red lips against his pale white face looked so pitiful.
“Run away… Ruel.”
“Instead of saying that, hurry and get up, you fool!”
A dry laugh escaped between Franz’s lips.
“You’re the foolish one. Trying to help me when you don’t even remember me. You haven’t changed at all.”
The werewolf, having barely missed its prey, attacked again with a ferocious roar.
Are we really going to die like this?
I squeezed my eyes shut.
Just then, a blue flash of sword light appeared before my eyes as the werewolf’s roar echoed.
Kraak! The massive werewolf fell with a scream.
Karden appeared, swinging his sword while stepping on the werewolf’s head.
Covered in monster blood, Karden reached out toward me while breathing heavily.
His eyes were not blue but a vivid red. However, they weren’t eyes of bloodthirsty madness.
“Shushu, are you hurt?”
I was too shocked to even make a fox cry. I kept hiccupping instead.
“Hic, hic, Karden.”
“Yes. It’s alright now.”
Karden stroked my head. Only when I felt his large hand and warm temperature did I finally feel at ease.
Karden picked me up in his arms and stood up. Only then did I notice the situation around us.
The peaceful forest had turned into a fierce battlefield due to the sudden attack of the werewolf pack.
The monsters’ roars could be heard sporadically from here and there. Soldiers were desperately fighting the werewolves, swinging their axes.
A cool wind brushed my fur and the smell of blood pierced my nose. I wondered if everyone was okay.
Nearby, Burke and Owen were swinging their swords, taking down werewolves.
Burke overwhelmed and knocked down werewolves with his formidable strength.
The soldiers were also fighting the werewolves relentlessly with determined expressions. Ron was also helping defend the soldiers by deploying magic circles.
Only then did I realize. These people were the border defense force. They were warriors who fought monsters daily.
Karden put me down in a thicket dense with dry branches.
“Hide here.”
Before I could stop him, Karden stepped forward with his sword.
The werewolf pack’s attacks were endless. Just when one seemed defeated, another monster behind would swing its claws and charge forward relentlessly.
Every time Karden’s sword cut through the darkness, monsters fell like leaves. Seeing this, a werewolf charged forward with an enraged roar.
But Karden dodged lightly, then thrust his sword deep into the monster’s heart.
Unable to watch such a horrific scene to the end, I turned my head away.
Through the thicket, a silver fox was staring at me intently.
“Kaang! You scared me!”
When did this guy transform into a fox? Because of his white fur, I couldn’t distinguish him from the snowballs and didn’t know he was beside me.
“Hey, why are you here? Aren’t you running away?”
Why are you still here? With scary werewolves lurking around.
The fox’s transparent silver eyes stared at me intensely. Despite the urgent situation, those eyes were clear and beautiful.
“Why did you help me?”
“What do you mean?”
“I thought you would resent me. Ruel.”
Franz’s voice was mixed with guilt and sadness. This guy felt sorry towards me.
“I don’t resent you. Because I don’t remember anything.”
Franz wore a dazed expression as if he’d been hit. Like a child left alone after losing their way.
Just then, I felt powerful magical energy from behind. Strong enough to make my whole body tingle with electricity.
Magic that rippled like deep darkness – it was Karden.
Don’t tell me Karden’s magic is going berserk again.
Just a moment ago his eyes were red but he hadn’t lost his reason.
His red eyes were flashing in his face, which was engulfed in dark red flames.
Why hadn’t I noticed?
He was already in a berserk state. He just pretended not to have lost his reason. That’s why he left me here.
Karden killed the last werewolf by twisting its neck with his hands.
Black ashes scattered and disappeared along with the pungent smell of blood between his fingers.
He turned his head with an expressionless face. His red eyes had already lost the light of reason.
Maildra waved his hand toward the soldiers and shouted urgently.
“Everyone withdraw! It’s dangerous to get close to His Grace!”
The soldiers, seemingly familiar with Karden’s berserk situation, quickly backed away. Knights with shields appeared to protect the soldiers.
Even Captain Burke and Owen couldn’t approach Karden and were watching the situation from afar.
Even the knights who had been bravely fighting monsters just moments ago wore tense expressions.
What they feared most wasn’t the monsters, but their commander in a berserk state.
Born with magical power beyond human capability. But his weak body couldn’t fully accept the magic, causing periodic berserker episodes.
Had they been just waiting helplessly for berserk Karden to calm down until now?
Maildra stepped forward and spoke carefully.
“Your Grace, are you alright? Can you calm yourself?”
“Urgh…”
Instead of answering, Karden let out a painful groan. He staggered and leaned against a tree.
He breathed heavily, then dropped the sword he was holding. Red blood spread around the sword fallen in the snow.
Karden slowly knelt in the snow. Only his red eyes burned through his disheveled black hair.
Thick blood vessels bulged all over his body, and the blood flowing beneath them writhed as if running wild.
Karden’s eyes moved grotesquely, then he started shaking while showing the whites of his eyes.
He was letting out beast-like groans while clenching his fists tight.
It must be unbearable pain for a human, yet he was suppressing the rampaging magic.
“Everyone step back! You could get caught in His Grace’s magic if you’re near. Get away!”
Maildra urgently directed the soldiers. The soldiers backed away, gripped by fear.
Only Burke, Owen, Ron, and some elite knights maintained their positions.
Their eyes reddened as they watched their loyal commander suffering from the berserk state.
Ah, no. I have to stop this.
When I tried to run forward, my tail wouldn’t move.
Looking back, Franz was glaring at me while holding my tail.
I shouted while struggling with all my might to pull my tail free.
“What are you doing, let go!”
“Are you crazy? It’s dangerous to go to him now!”
“I’m the only one who can save Karden! There’s no time!”
Franz growled, baring his teeth.
“Why are you trying to save that human? What is he to you?”
“Let go. It’s none of your business.”
“Ruel!”
I yanked my tail away and rushed forward. I couldn’t see or hear anything else.
All I could see was Karden suffering before my eyes.
