Karden turned his gaze toward me while breathing heavily. He suddenly vomited blood. Red blood trickled down from the corner of his mouth.
While clutching his chest, Karden waved his hand at me.
It was a desperate gesture telling me not to come closer, but even that lacked strength.
“Shushu, don’t get close!”
“It’s dangerous!”
I heard people’s urgent cries, but I ignored them.
I kicked off the ground and jumped.
Karden reflexively raised his hand to stop me. Not missing that moment, I bared my fangs and bit his wrist.
With all my strength, with all my heart.
Before, when I bit berserk Karden’s hand, he returned to normal. Uncle Bert also calmed down from his berserk state when I bit him.
I believed it would be the same this time.
The moment my fangs pierced his skin, magical power like a massive wave flowed into my body.
At that instant, my heart constricted. As if someone was squeezing my heart.
“Ugh!”
An overwhelming power flowed into me. Like drowning in the ocean without being able to swim properly.
My head was spinning and dizzy. My vision turned black and wavered.
I desperately flailed my four legs, but the magical power was surging through my small body.
Through my blurry vision, I could see Karden.
His face was distorted with guilt and devastation.
Karden’s red eyes instantly returned to their emerald color. Thank goodness. He’s back to normal.
“Shushu, why…”
His hands holding me were trembling like aspen leaves.
I wanted to tell him I was fine, but my tongue wouldn’t move.
With my last bit of strength, I managed to wag my tail slightly, then lost consciousness.

The small white cotton-ball fox was breathing faintly in Karden’s hands.
It was so light, he could barely feel its weight.
He felt his heart constrict with pain.
To deal with the suddenly appearing werewolf pack, he had no choice but to use excessive magical power. Once he used magic, it was difficult to calm down.
Karden had planned to deal with the monster pack quickly and go deep into the forest to calm his berserk state.
That’s how he had been handling monster subjugation until now.
But this time the berserk state progressed faster than expected, and there wasn’t even time to retreat.
While barely maintaining his sanity and suppressing the berserker state, a white cotton ball jumped in through his reddened vision.
Like a dazzling snowflake.
Realizing it was Shushu, he tried to warn her to stay away, but it was already too late.
“No!”
Shushu bit Karden’s wrist with all her might using her small, cute fangs.
At that moment, the magical power that had been raging directionless inside his body began flowing out as if it had found a path.
He clearly saw the red haze-like magical power flowing out of his body and into Shushu’s small form.
Shushu trembled all over while absorbing Karden’s magic, then went completely stiff.
At the same time, Karden felt the magic enveloping his body subside and his red vision clear.
As soon as Karden came to his senses, he checked if Shushu was alright.
“Shushu, wake up!”
Though Karden called out desperately, Shushu didn’t move at all. He felt a heart-wrenching sadness knowing this happened because of him.
“It’s my fault…”
Karden gritted his teeth, feeling intense hatred and contempt toward himself.
The hereditary magic was not a blessing but a curse.
A curse that greedily devoured even precious beings.
Perhaps he was the real monster, hungry for blood.
Blood trickled from between Karden’s lips.
“Your Grace, please calm down! You must maintain your reason, especially at times like this!”
Maildra called out earnestly. But Karden stood blankly holding Shushu as if he couldn’t hear anything.
‘Something’s wrong with His Grace! He might go berserk again.’
Maildra immediately understood that the Grand Duke’s condition was dangerous. He had to calm His Grace somehow.
He swallowed dryly while pushing up his glasses. Finally, he had no choice but to use the last resort.
It was the final method used when the berserk state wouldn’t calm down.
Maildra exchanged glances with Captain Burke beside him. Since they had resolved crisis situations like this when Karden was in a berserk state before, they could understand with just a look.
Captain Burke nodded with a pained expression and moved quietly. He approached behind Karden while muffling his footsteps.
Fortunately, Karden was so focused on Shushu that he didn’t notice the presence, his head still lowered.
Maildra approached Ron and gave instructions in a low voice.
“Ron. Bring Shushu here right now. We’ll calm His Grace with the last resort.”
Ron nodded and approached Karden with a tense expression.
Karden just kept looking down at Shushu with unfocused eyes, showing no interest in his surroundings.
As if he were alone, cut off from the world.
“Your Grace, I’ll use healing magic on Shushu. Please let me have her for a moment.”
Ron spoke carefully while reaching for Shushu.
As Ron was about to take Shushu, Burke prepared to strike the back of Karden’s head with all his might using his huge fist.
It was the best method passed down in secret within the border defense force to calm their commander when he was in a berserk state.
“Please forgive this disloyalty, Commander!”
Just as Burke cried out in anguish with a devastated expression.
“Foolish humans, stop.”
A silver-furred fox slowly walked out from between the birch trees. It was Franz, a fox with mysterious fur that gave off a soft glow.
Burke stopped his fist in surprise, and Ron’s eyes went wide.
“Did that fox just talk? Is it a fox shapeshifter?”
Franz appeared before the people without showing any sign of fear.
The soldiers made way for the fox, looking at it with curious eyes.
Franz walked up to Karden proudly like a prince.
Karden narrowed his eyes as he stared at the fox. His hazy eyes slowly began to show their blue color.
“Are you from the same fox clan as Shushu?”
Franz glanced at the unconscious Shushu and spoke coldly.
“That one isn’t dead, so calm down.”
“What do you mean?”
Karden asked with a wary expression.
As the silver fox swished its luxuriant tail, it instantly transformed into a silver-haired youth along with a gust of wind.
The soldiers gasped in surprise. Franz ignored the reactions around him and placed his hand on Shushu’s head.
Karden slightly furrowed his brow but said nothing.
Shushu was curled up in a ball, breathing softly as if in deep sleep.
Deep regret and pain were evident in Franz’s eyes as he looked at Shushu.
As if it never happened, he quickly returned to a cold expression and stared sharply at Karden.
“Ruel isn’t unconscious, just sleeping. She fell asleep after suddenly consuming powerful magic.”
Everyone felt relief and gratitude at the silver-haired youth’s words that Shushu was just sleeping.
Maildra let out a light sigh while calming his startled heart.
“Thank goodness. I’m glad Shushu isn’t hurt.”
Ron, who had been pale with worry that something had happened to Shushu, finally smiled.
“Ah, I was really scared. I thought something terrible had happened to Shushu.”
Captain Burke’s broad shoulders slumped as his eyes reddened, and Owen patted his shoulder to comfort him. But tears were already welling up in Owen’s eyes too.
Karden quietly looked down at the baby fox without any change in expression.
The self-blame and anger he had felt until just now gradually subsided. Finally, Karden spoke.
“Then that’s truly fortunate.”
Though Karden’s words were close to a whisper, they were filled with relief and gratitude.
Karden’s gaze turned to Franz.
“You’re from the same fox clan as Shushu, right? You called her Ruel earlier, is that Shushu’s real name?”
Franz frowned and slightly lowered his head, biting his lips hard.
“Our Wolfes clan abandoned that one. She can’t return anymore.”
Though confused by the fox shapeshifter’s words, Karden questioned pressingly.
“What do you mean? For what reason did the fox clan cast out Shushu?”
“I have no reason to tell humans.”
Franz spoke coldly before turning his back. He instantly transformed back into a silver fox with a swishing luxuriant tail.
The silver fox turned its head briefly to look at Shushu in Karden’s arms. Then it nimbly leaped into the birch forest.
The soldiers hurriedly reached out to catch it, but the silver fox had already disappeared.
