- Chapter 35 - Cannot Share a Room with an Unrelated Man
Why is he acting like this? As I tilted my head in confusion, Owen emphasized again with a serious expression.
“I absolutely cannot allow you to share a room with an unrelated man, Shushu.”
I was dumbfounded by his behavior, acting like an older brother scolding his little sister.
“Why are you acting like this too, Owen? He’s one of my kind.”
“He called you his fiancée with his own mouth. Besides, he’s a mature male. All males are wolves.”
“Franz is a fox though.”
“Anyway, absolutely not. I cannot allow it.”
As I was arguing with Owen, Betty clapped her hands twice.
Everyone’s attention turned to Betty at once.
“That’s enough. Right now, your friend’s stability is important. If Lady Shushu wishes, we’ll first take him to Lady Shushu’s room, then move him to a guest room later.”
Though Betty wore a gentle smile, she exuded the experience and strong presence befitting of a capable head maid.
Everyone, overwhelmed by her presence, found themselves nodding unconsciously.
“Okay. We’ll do as Betty says.”
“Lady Shushu, please come out now. You need to eat.”
As I was about to obediently follow Betty, I looked towards Maildra and Owen.
Perhaps noticing my anxiety and worry, the two showed gentle eye smiles.
“Lady Shushu, are you worried about His Grace?”
“I accidentally bit His Grace. He must be very angry.”
I hung my head.
I did something foolish. I could have just said it with words, but I was so scared thinking Karden would really dispose of Franz.
Maildra came before me, knelt on one knee, and met my gaze.
“Don’t worry. His Grace would never be angry with you, Lady Shushu, no matter what happens. I guarantee this as the chamberlain who has served His Grace for many years.”
“Really?”
I looked up at Maildra with round eyes.
Owen also crouched down beside me and gently patted my head.
“Shushu, don’t worry. And I completely understand His Grace’s feelings.”
“Huh? What do you understand, Owen?”
As I tilted my head in confusion, Owen covered his mouth with his hand, showing an expression that revealed complicated emotions.
“It’s like the fury you’d feel when some dark thief tries to take away your preciously raised daughter.”
“What? What does that mean?”
I was so frustrated from not understanding that I felt like jumping up and down. Owen exchanged glances with Maildra.
Their eyes showed a deep sense of camaraderie, understanding each other perfectly.
“Hey, why are you two the only ones who know? Why won’t you tell me?”
When I got irritated and started huffing, Owen gently stroked my back and whispered kindly.
“It means you’re that precious to us. So precious that we don’t want to lose you to anyone. That’s how I feel, and His Grace feels the same.”
Maildra stood up after making sure Franz was still properly unconscious.
“Ron will come soon to wake up the fox. Please wait a moment. We’ll go report to His Grace’s office.”
“Okay. I’ll stay here and watch Franz.”
After Maildra and Owen left, Betty looked at me quietly with a meaningful smile.
“You’re quite worried about your friend, Lady Shushu.”
“W-what are you talking about? Worried?!”
I jumped up and shouted.
“He’s such an annoying and troublesome fellow, when he wakes up I’m going to step on his tail and chase him away!”
“Heh. I understand. Then I’ll bring your meal to your room.”
After Betty left, I sat in a loaf position next to the sleeping Franz.
Next to the large fox, I looked even smaller and more cotton ball-like.
Perhaps because I was possessing a fox’s body, somehow seeing Franz, who was the same species, made my heart feel warm and comfortable.
I could clearly sense from his eye contact, breathing, tense fur, and rapid heartbeat that everything he said was sincere.
I had so many questions to ask Franz when he woke up.
Specifically what my magic absorption ability was, when I would be able to perfectly transform into a human…
While I was lost in various thoughts listening to Franz’s peaceful breathing, it happened.
My ears perked up reflexively. The sound of careful footsteps.
My heart started pounding, wondering if it might be Karden.
But my anticipation disappeared instantly. Instead of Karden’s heavy yet dignified footsteps, these were light and cheerful footsteps – it was Ron.
My perked-up ears drooped automatically. Just then, Ron poked his head through the opened door.
Perhaps seeing my disappointed expression, Ron carefully asked.
“Shushu, are you okay? You look sad.”
“Kyaang. It’s nothing.”
Ron’s clothes carried a faint scent of Karden. It seemed he had been with Karden before coming to me.
Though one has to pass by Karden’s room to come to mine, he was nowhere to be seen.
“Ron, where is His Grace?”
“Ah, he’s in his office for an urgent meeting. I just stopped by there before coming to you.”
“I see.”
I nodded weakly. Ron carefully observed my reaction and gently patted my head.
“You seem down, Shushu.”
“No, I’m fine. Kyaung.”
“Don’t worry about His Grace’s arm. I treated it. The wound wasn’t even deep.”
“Ah, thank you.”
What a relief. I had been worried that Karden’s wound might be deep. Since it was an emergency, I couldn’t properly control my strength.
“Shushu, you were just trying to protect your friend. His Grace will understand.”
Ron comforted me kindly, having noticed my concerns.
“I’ll now remove the sleep spell. It seems you have things you want to discuss with your friend.”
“Yes, please.”
As Ron waved his hand, blue smoke rose and enveloped Franz.
“He’ll wake up soon…”
Ron took out a small circular artifact from his chest and gave it to me. It was a metal tool engraved with magical formation patterns.
“What’s this?”
“If that fox tries to bother you, throw this artifact. A net will come out and immobilize him completely. It’s a net for magical beasts, even sharp fangs can’t break it.”
Ron was as serious as if he were explaining self-defense equipment for dealing with perverts.
I couldn’t help but laugh in disbelief.
“Catch Franz with a net? What do you all think of him? He may be rude, but he’s not a bad person.”
“Didn’t he say he’s your fiancé? What if he kidnaps you? I can’t let anyone take away Shushu, who’s like a little sister.”
Ron nodded firmly with clenched fists. He had the air of a little brother trying to protect his youngest sister.
Ron, I’m actually much older than you age-wise. Still, it’s cute how you’re trying to protect me.
“Ron, just a moment.”
I wiggled my round front paw. Ron tilted his head but obediently lowered his head to me.
I grinned and pressed my front paws on Ron’s head repeatedly, like a cat kneading.
Ron’s fluffy red hair felt good to touch. Sometimes I would touch his hair when he let his guard down.
“Ugh, caught by Shushu again!”
Ron cried out indignantly.
“Shushu, you’re a fox, why are you doing the kneading thing?”
“It’s my hobby. It has nothing to do with species. Kyaang.”
Ron grumbled but quietly let me continue with his head lowered.
His neck must be stiff from bowing like that. How thoughtful of him.
Just then, Betty came in carrying a tray with food.
“Oh, Ron is here. Would you like to join Lady Shushu for dinner?”
“I’m fine, Sister.”
Betty set the tray down in front of me. It was freshly baked bread and savory chicken stew. Though I had no appetite earlier due to feeling down, the smell of delicious food mysteriously brought my appetite back.
While I was licking my small tongue and eating the stew, Betty brought an armful of bedding.
“Sister Betty, that looks heavy. Let me help you.”
Ron politely offered and took the bedding Betty was carrying.
I don’t know whose younger brother he is, but he was raised well.
Betty and Ron laid the bedding softly on the floor, and the two of them struggled together to barely manage moving Franz.
“Thank you everyone for going through so much trouble because of Franz.”
Betty said she would wait outside and left, and Ron also got up saying he had only come briefly during the meeting.
“Shushu, I’ll come right back after the meeting. If anything happens, throw the artifact, okay?”
Sheesh, he’s like a youngest brother nagging with worry about his sister.
After everyone left, only Franz and I remained in my chamber. Waiting for Franz to wake up, I got bored and restless after not even a few minutes.
He’s not Sleeping Beauty, when is he going to wake up? The sleep spell should be lifted by now.
I approached Franz and tapped his forehead with my fluffy front paw.
“Hey, you sleepyhead, wake up already.”
This feels like real siblings where you kick your oversleeping brother to wake him up.
Since I’ve started, should I try pressing with my front paws? I pressed my small front paw firmly on Franz’s soft cheek. His squishy, elastic cheek was surprisingly fun and addictive to touch.
This is… dangerous, isn’t it?
Before I knew it, I was seriously pressing both of Franz’s cheeks alternately.
“Stop that while I’m asking nicely, Shushu.”
A deep, low voice resonated. I jumped in surprise and lifted my front paws.
Franz’s long silver eyelashes fluttered like butterflies.
As he slowly raised his body, his straight ears, the gleaming silver fur flowing down his spine, and his dignified, noble tail all adjusted their posture.
Franz slowly turned his head toward me. His face had exquisitely sharp features and blue eyes.
Could there be a fox as beautiful and magnificent as this? I could understand now why people speak of being enchanted by foxes.
