- Chapter 7 - I Messed Up, I Caused an Accident
Karden opened his mouth while staring at me intently, resting his chin on one hand.
“Foxes should dislike baths, didn’t it make a fuss?”
Betty smiled and bowed her head.
“Not at all. Shushu was as well-behaved as a noble young lady during the bath.”
“Wait, young lady?”
Karden made an expression as if he had been hit.
“Could it be that Shushu was female?”
“Yes. I confirmed it clearly while bathing her.”
“Unexpected. I thought for sure it was male.”
I bristled all the fur on my body and raised my tail straight up. I bared my fangs and snarled threateningly.
“Kyaang! (Mistaking me for a male, you dullard!)”
“Oh my, Shushu, calm down. You’ll mess up your fur like that.”
Karden looked at me for a moment, then covered his mouth with his hand and turned his head away.
“Kwang? (Are you ignoring me?)”
Looking closely, Karden’s shoulders were shaking slightly. The muscles on his face were also trembling.
Karden took a deep breath and then returned to his expressionless face.
“I apologize for the mistake. Shushu, eat your meal.”
What’s with him?
As I watched Karden walking quickly to his table like a dog chasing a chicken, I inadvertently glanced at the long mirror beside me.
In the mirror was a round white ball. With only three dots for eyes, nose, and mouth.
“Kaang? (What’s that? Why does my body look like that?)”
Startled, I jumped up, and the white ball seemed to bounce. Why has my fur become like this?
Did static electricity build up from rubbing against the carpet?
“I’ll brush it again for you. Just a moment.”
While Betty struggled to brush my ball-shaped fur straight, Karden was elegantly sipping his tea.
As I snarled, annoyed by the villain’s nonchalant attitude, Betty comforted me.
“Shushu, are you hungry? I’ve brought some delicious food.”
Betty smiled as she set the food plate in front of me.
On the plate were well-grilled steak and roasted vegetables. The delicious smell of meat stimulated my nose.
“Kyaang! (It’s meat!)”
Whether human or fox, one would lose their senses at the sight of the juices from a perfectly medium-grilled steak.
Drool dripped from my mouth. I was about to pounce on the steak following my wild instincts, but I hesitated.
Even if my body is a baby fox, my soul is that of a person with reason and intellect, so I should maintain table manners.
I tapped the napkin in front of me with my front paw, then pointed to my neck.
“Oh my, Shushu is so clever. To know table etiquette.”
Betty exclaimed in admiration as she gently tied the napkin around my neck. The palm-sized napkin covered my entire body.
I could feel Karden’s gaze fixed on me.
Hehe, I’m not an ordinary fox, you see.
I elegantly nibbled on the steak bit by bit.
When the meat and juices burst in perfect harmony in my mouth, stars sparkled before my eyes.
Goodness, how can it be this delicious! I almost lost my senses and pounced on the plate.
But my soul is human. I can’t abandon the dignity of a human with reason and intellect.
Exercising superhuman patience, I continued to nibble on the steak politely until the end.
Betty stood beside me, clapping her hands in delight.
“Oh my, even our Shushu’s eating manner is so cute.”
Praising me while I’m eating, how embarrassing.
I licked the plate clean until it sparkled, even the leftover steak sauce.
“You ate it all clean. You must have been very hungry, Shushu.”
Karden smiled slightly looking at my plate.
I felt a little embarrassed, but oh well. I’m a baby fox after all.
Just then, there was a knock and the drawing room door opened. Aide Maildra entered with a polite greeting.
“Your Grace, I have an urgent report.”
“Understood. I’ll hear the report in my office.”
As Karden stood up, his eyes met mine.
“Shushu, do you want to come along?”
I immediately nodded. Reflexively, my fluffy tail wagged slightly.
Oops, I quickly lowered my tail.
It’s embarrassing. I look like a dog wagging its tail asking to play together.
There must be various information and knowledge exchanged in the office. I might be able to hear some useful information. I can’t stay by the villain’s side forever, after all.
Maildra looked at me with a gentle smile.
“You’ve even named the baby fox.”
“Yes. Her formal name is Shuvelia. Shushu for short. Turns out she’s a little lady.”
Maildra pushed up his glasses, slightly surprised.
“Ah, you didn’t know Shushu’s gender? I could tell at a glance that she was a cute little lady.”
As Maildra spoke as if boasting about his discernment, Karden frowned, seemingly displeased.
“Aide, how did you know that?”
When Karden glared at him with sharp eyes, Maildra’s shoulders flinched.
“Well? Of course, because she’s such a lovely and cute baby fox…”
Maildra even stuttered, looking troubled. I started to feel sorry for the aide.
He must have a hard time assisting such a cold and insensitive superior.
I waved my short legs at Karden.
“Kaang! (Hey, villain. You’re the dull one.)”
Karden chuckled and gently grabbed my small paw.
“No matter how much you wave, it’s not threatening at all. Cotton ball.”
Karden carried me and strode into his office.
The office was surrounded by bookshelves, with a map of the continent hanging on the wall.
A mahogany desk caught my eye beneath the large window. Stacks of documents and books were messily piled on the desk.
Maildra quickly brought an armchair and placed it next to the desk. Karden put me down on the chair and gently patted my head.
“Shushu, be a good girl and stay still.”
What’s this? Treating me like a pet dog.
I raised my small nose haughtily and turned my head away.
Karden, seated at the desk, began to focus on work. He checked and reviewed the stacked documents, approved them, and continued meetings with his subordinates.
Until late in the evening, various people visited the office. Officials came to discuss tax issues, and knights came for interviews about training.
Karden looked busy issuing orders, suggesting solutions, and signing documents.
“There are only two weeks left until the monster subjugation. Make sure there’s no disruption in supplies within that time.”
“Yes, I will follow your orders.”
While I lazily lay on the cushion, watching Karden work busily.
Indeed, there’s nothing more fun than watching others work hard while you relax, hehe.
I sat quietly next to Karden’s desk for over half a day. When I was nodding off, bored of watching people…
“Your Grace, have you decided to keep the fox? It’s such a lovely baby fox.”
A middle-aged man handing documents to Karden looked at me with a fond smile.
Others waiting their turn nodded in agreement.
“Haha, I thought it was a doll sitting there.”
“The office atmosphere seems to have softened with the cute fox around.”
The officials rushed to praise me. Aide Maildra was also smiling contentedly. Like a father hearing praise for his child.
Karden raised the corner of his mouth while signing documents with a quill pen.
“I’m busy working, but Shushu looks too comfortable.”
“Kaaang. (I’m in charge of being cute. Do you know how hard it is to just sit still?)”
When I spoke with a cry, Karden chuckled and stroked my back.
“Right. You’ve worked hard dozing off next to me. Shushu.”
“Kyung? (You noticed I was sleeping?)”
Karden said as he returned the documents to the official.
“Everyone, withdraw. We’ll end today’s work here.”
The officials’ expressions brightened at Karden’s dismissal order.
The reaction to leaving work on time is the same in any world.
As the officials left the office, Maildra approached me as if he had been waiting.
He bent his knees and looked at me, with an expression like an uncle expecting to play with his niece.
“Shushu, were you very bored? Shall we play catch the mouse?”
“Kaang? Kaaak! (I hate mice! They’re gross!)”
I growled, baring my fangs. Just the thought of catching mice makes me shudder and feel terrible.
“Ah, I suggested it because foxes like catching mice, but it seems I’ve offended you. I’m sorry, Shushu.”
Maildra apologized to me, looking troubled. Just then, one of the documents in his hand fell onto the carpet floor.
<Training Plan for Private Soldiers in Preparation for Monster Subjugation>
Wait a minute, I can read the letters of this world? I thought I wouldn’t be able to read after being possessing a fox.
It was a golden opportunity to be able to read and write. Even if I can’t speak, I can convey my opinions through writing.
For example, demanding that all three meals be prepared with only grade-A beef.
I saw a quill pen on the desk. Karden was in serious conversation with Maildra in front of the continent map.
Maybe I could borrow the quill pen for a moment.
I leaped onto the large and high desk.
I believed I could jump in one go because I’m a fox, but I was overconfident.
“Kying?”
Barely hanging onto the edge of the desk, I flailed my short legs.
I almost suffered the embarrassment of falling. Using even my claws, I barely managed to climb onto the desk.
Phew, I’m exhausted.
Completely drained, I lay spread-eagled on the desk. I panted heavily with my pink tongue out.
That’s when I saw the quill pen, inkwell, and paper right in front of me.
I was about to grip the pen in my mouth and struggle to move it to write on the paper.
Thud. Something hard hit my front paw.
It was the opened inkwell. Black ink from the inkwell was spreading across the desk.
Ah… I messed up. I caused an accident.
