  3. Chapter 78 - The Capital Rodelin

The capital Rodelin was a magnificent and prosperous city.

Riding in a carriage along the well-paved main road that cut through the center, I couldn’t help but exclaim in admiration.

The magnificent, pure white royal castle stood in the center, with five main roads extending outward in intersecting patterns.

Along these five main roads, various streets and districts unfolded, with wide rivers, streams, and gardens perfectly implemented.

The central road where our carriage traveled was lined with beautiful tree-lined avenues and picturesque townhouses.

Splendid carriages ran along the road while noblewomen in the latest fashion dresses and noblemen in elegant suits strolled on the sidewalks.

“The capital scenery is so wonderful. Kyaang.”

“Shushu, you’ll fall out of the carriage if you’re not careful.”

Yudis smiled as if she couldn’t help herself and held me tightly in her arms. She stroked my fluffy fur with an entranced smile.

“Ah. This soft texture. Indeed, our Shushu is so lovely and cute.”

“Th, thanks for the compliment, Lady Yudis.”

“If it’s not too presumptuous, may I nibble on your pink paw pads just a little?”

Yudis whispered to me with seductive eyes.

Shouldn’t that kind of look be reserved for a lover?

Still in her arms, I carefully hid my front paws and spoke seriously.

“I refuse.”

“Aw, just once? Then I’ll give you anything you want. Jewels and gold? Or a mansion? What do you want? Just say it. Big sister will give you everything.”

“Lady Yudis. Giving so much just to nibble on my paw once doesn’t make economic sense. Are you really a merchant guild master?”

I narrowed my eyes suspiciously and clicked my tongue, and Yudis sighed with genuine disappointment.

“Indeed, my Shushu isn’t easy. But that proud and feisty personality is the charm of a fox.”

When Yudis gets lost in my cuteness, there’s no reasoning with her. I might be better off transforming into a human.

The carriage stopped in front of the grand entrance of a splendid mansion with a green roof.

It was an impressive mansion with an elegant and refined garden, located not far from the royal palace in the center of the capital.

The carriage door opened, and Karden appeared.

“Shushu, you must be tired from coming all this way. Are you uncomfortable anywhere?”

“Oh, I’m fine. I’m perfectly healthy.”

I deliberately exaggerated, wagging my bushy tail vigorously.

Actually, after kissing Karden at the lake last night, I had been deliberately avoiding conversations with him out of awkwardness.

I returned to fox form because I was embarrassed and shy. If I saw Karden in human form, my face would surely turn bright red.

At times like this, staying as a fox is more comfortable.

Whether he knew my complicated feelings or not, Karden gently stroked my head as usual.

“That’s good. I need to go to the palace to have an audience with His Majesty the King. Shushu, you should rest at the mansion or go sightseeing in the capital with Yudis.”

“You’re going to the palace right now? We just arrived and haven’t even rested yet.”

“It’s my duty as a vassal. You rest first.”

Karden gave a faint smile, but his expression was somehow dark and stiff.

Karden’s gaze turned to Yudis.

“Yudis, I entrust Shushu to you. Owen and Ron must come with me to the royal castle, so I’ll assign the rest of the knights as escorts.”

“Don’t worry, Brother. The capital is practically under my jurisdiction. Our guild members are everywhere, so who would dare try to kidnap Shushu? As long as I’m here, they’d lose their heads.”

I quietly moved my bottom away, becoming afraid of Yudis, who spoke of cutting off heads without batting an eye.

Karden answered with a rather satisfied smile.

“How unusual to feel such trust in you.”

Why are the Helleide family members so scary? I absolutely hate seeing blood.

Karden immediately left on horseback, leading Owen and Ron.

As Owen and Ron departed, they bid me farewell with their eyes.

Seeing their pitiful gazes like cows being led to slaughter, my eyes also grew hot.

Ah, poor things. My heart aches so much. Having to go straight to work without proper rest.

If it were me, I’d throw my resignation in Karden’s face and run away. Of course, given his temperament of likely chasing me to the ends of hell, I’d fear the consequences.

Yudis, who had gotten out of the carriage, stretched refreshingly. Then she called the mansion’s butler and ordered him to move the luggage.

Dozens of servants came out from the mansion all at once to greet us, then began carrying the loads of luggage from the carriage into the mansion.

The knights took the horses to the stables, and some moved their belongings to the knights’ quarters.

Yudis, who was commanding them at the forefront, nodded with satisfaction.

“Shushu, do you want to go into the mansion and rest now, or would you like me to show you around the capital? Just tell me what you want.”

It was late afternoon, but there was still time before sunset. After thinking for a moment, I gently wagged my tail.

“Is there a royal library in the capital? There’s a book I want to find.”

“A book? What kind of book do you need?”

“I need a book with information about fox shapeshifters, the Ulpes tribe.”

The library would be the optimal place to first seek information or knowledge in the capital. There might be records about the Ulpes tribe.

With luck, I might even find information about the ominous being said to come from the Ulpes tribe.

I looked up at Yudis with sparkling, expectant eyes. She rested her chin on her hand with a thoughtful expression.

“Hmm. The royal library has all the ancient documents. But it’s not open to everyone. You need qualifications to access it.”

“Isn’t there a way to get into the library?”

Yudis smiled confidently and took me in her arms.

“Have you forgotten that I’m the master of the Helleon merchant guild? With my status alone, there’s nowhere in the capital I can’t go.”

***

The royal library was located in the northern area of the capital. The carriage carrying Yudis and me stopped in front of the main entrance.

I carefully stepped out of the carriage, adjusting the hem of my dress.

I actually wanted to wear ordinary clothes, but Yudis insisted I should look elegant and intellectual, directing me to wear a green silk dress and jacket.

My silver hair was braided into a single plait, and I wore a green hat with a black rose corsage tilted to one side.

Yudis took my lace-gloved hand and smiled with satisfaction.

“Indeed, my lovely lady.”

“Isn’t this too much? I’m just going to the library.”

“The royal library can only be entered by nobles, so we must pay extra attention to attire. Come, Shuvelia, let’s go in.”

Yudis gave a charming smile and took my hand, heading toward the main entrance of the royal library.

When the knights guarding the entrance saw Yudis, they immediately saluted and opened the doors.

They didn’t even conduct any inspection. So this was the power of the Helleon merchant guild.

The royal library we reached after crossing the garden beyond the main entrance, was a majestic and refined four-story building. The huge doors carved with two lions were impressive.

As Yudis and I approached the doors, the knight guarding the entrance saluted and opened them.

As the massive doors opened, countless books came into view.

Looking inside, equally massive bookshelves filled the walls of the library.

Under the light pouring through the glass semi-circular ceiling, the books sparkled as if trying to convey ancient knowledge.

As I was about to enter through the doors, Yudis took a step back.

“Shushu, would you like to read some books in the library? I have some urgent matters to attend to.”

“What? Weren’t you coming with me?”

Yudis cleared her throat, seeming a bit troubled.

“Actually, I get allergies when I read books. I’ve always found libraries stuffy and didn’t like going in. I’ll have the carriage and subordinates wait outside. When you come out of the library, come straight to the dressmaker’s shop. Understood?”

This actually worked out well. I wanted to quietly search for the secrets of the Ulpes tribe by myself.

I clasped my hands together and answered demurely like an obedient child.

“Yes, Sister Yudis.”

Yudis’s eyes gleamed brightly at being called “sister.”

“Wait, did you just call me sister?”

“Ah, yes. I did…”

Yudis hugged me tightly. I was enveloped in her embrace, her height towering over mine. There was no time to avoid it.

“Kyaa, I’m so happy! To hear Shushu call me sister! I’ve decided. Shushu, don’t marry my brother! Just be adopted as our family’s youngest sister! Live with me forever! I’ll make you happy for life!”

I could barely breathe, firmly trapped in her embrace. I flapped my hands in the air and managed to answer.

“Th-thank you, but please let go of this. Ugh.”
