The Genius Professor Wants An Easy Life - Chapter 34.2
Without any apparent reason.
It felt as if someone deliberately blocked it.
I quickly realized the reason.
‘…My status wasn’t enough!’
What I just attempted, even though it was a limited mimicry within the world of illusions, was an act of interfering with causality.
An action permitted only for an ascendant.
‘…Would they know about that?’
I gritted my teeth.
Anyway, if things continued like this, I’d be engulfed in the explosion and die.
It wasn’t the time to care about trivial laws of the world.
‘I have to deceive my way through.’
As a former salesperson, I was skilled in tricks.
I compared the current situation to when I was on Earth.
If being an ascendant was the ‘qualification’ and the ‘assessment system’ verified it, then I needed to target the system’s ‘weakness.’
‘Pretend to have the qualification.’
It was all about ‘pretending.’
I began to imagine.
Myself as an ascendant.
Beyond being a magic expert (4th-tier, Expert),
As a high-level mage, I began walking the path of magic (5th-tier, Supreme),
As a mage, I firmly held my own world (6th-tier, Holder),
Eventually, I completed my own magic entirely (7th-tier, Master),
And ultimately transcended even that (8th-tier, Grand).
Gradually, I imagined challenging the ultimate and ascending to the heavens.
‘It’s just imagination, after all.’
I am the Grand Master of Magic.
When I could become such a figure, I could intuitively sense what I would be like.
The strange thing was, it didn’t feel alien at all.
It was as if this was the status I was meant to have.
I invoked the magic that had been dormant as if entranced.
This time, the world didn’t forbid me either.
Gooooong!
The shards began to disperse into dust.
It was a magnificent sight.
Everyone in the chamber watched in awe.
‘Haa. Surviving like this. Being a professor is so hard? I’ll never live quietly like a mouse from now on because of what I’ve been doing.’
But contrary to my hopes, things took an unexpected turn.
Sweeping messages came to mind:
The fragments of great power have been vanquished!
All in the world will sing praises to this achievement!
Up to this point, it’s fine.
It was a significant event to begin with.
As long as I don’t get caught for what I did, it’s all good.
But then…
You have experienced the power of the Ascendant!
Your soul bears the mark of a unique experience!
You gain the additional trait “Ascendant’s Grace (Incomplete, Temporary, Partial)!”
: You can temporarily manifest the limited power of the Ascendant under certain conditions!
“…What is this?”
…It’s absurd.
A nonsensical trait just appeared out of nowhere.
* * *
And so, the tumultuous practical exam came to an end.
The entire capital was turned upside down.
After all, it was the awakening of the fragments of Great Ones.
However, what shocked people the most was the following news.
“Did an unknown Ascendant save the Ruby Academy?”
“That’s right! According to former Chancellor Rudolph, the Ascendant’s great magic destroyed the fragments!”
“Huh, do you know anything about this Ascendant?”
“Not at all. It’s completely unknown. They might be a newly emerged Ascendant! Apparently, their magic is unlike any other known Ascendants’.”
A new Ascendant!
It was news enough to turn the world upside down.
They could be a presence capable of disrupting the balance of the continent.
People were buzzing about it like this.
“Our Ascendant, right? What a turn of events! Maybe they can even subjugate the Demon Realm!”
“Just the Demon Realm? They might be able to conquer the ‘Ran’ as well!”
“All hail the new Ascendant!”
Meanwhile, the illustrious Ascendant at the center of the rumors was thinking,
‘…This is a disaster. How did it come to this?’
…They were tearing their hair out.
‘It’s all because of that old man, Rudolph.’
I let out a deep sigh.
Rudolph seemed endlessly impressed by the new Ascendant who had come to their aid, going on and on about it.
The Ascendant’s magnificent magic split the Dreamworld. What a majestic sight!”
They must be of a just and righteous nature, this Ascendant. Oh, how can we ever repay this kindness?
It was beyond annoying.
I couldn’t care less about their attention being drawn elsewhere, not even to Catherine and Libel.
They were threatening to come after me, but their spineless attempts at intimidation sent a shiver down my spine.
‘…I absolutely, unequivocally have to keep this hidden. The moment I’m exposed, the life I’ve dreamt of is over’
Fortunately, there seemed to be little chance of this incident coming to light.
How could anyone possibly connect an Ascendant with a lowly trash like me?
As I expected, former Chancellor Rudolph didn’t recognize me at all.
“It’s been a while, trash.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Now that I’m no longer the chancellor, just call me by my name. By the way, I heard you’ve been appointed as a new professor?”
“Yes, that’s correct.”
“Hmm, I see. Well, thanks to you, we were able to protect the students without any casualties by ensuring sufficient Guards. As the former Chancellor, I express my gratitude.”
Despite much debate over my appointment, my efforts in bolstering security to protect the students without any loss of life earned me recognition and ultimately secured my position.
However, Former Chancellor Rudolph still regarded me with suspicion, furrowing his brow as he spoke.
“While I acknowledge your recent contributions, remember this: you’re still just an ‘temporary professor.’ I’ll be keeping an eye on you from now on.”
His tone carried the same sharpness as before, viewing me as the old troublemaker.
Strangely, I felt rather pleased.
Very nice indeed.
