The Harvest Mouse Exits the Fairytale Together with Cinderella - Chapter 14
The Count and Countess Bluewood were entertaining Duke Valkyriesen in the drawing room.
“Haha, I had no idea the young lord would join us today.”
“…….”
“It’s fortunate that my daughters are around the same age as the young lord.”
The Count tried to continue the conversation, sweating profusely.
However, the Duke seemed utterly uninterested in engaging.
He occasionally flicked an eyebrow, but mostly only tapped his pocket watch in time with the second hand.
The rhythmic sound grated on the Count’s nerves.
‘I thought he would threaten me with a sword or something…’
Despite his noble achievements etching his name in history, he was known as the ‘King of the Monstrous Beasts’.
The rumors were enough to imagine how fierce and animalistic he could be.
Yet, the Duke was overly calm— almost too much.
The Count couldn’t stop wiping cold sweat with his handkerchief.
Why has he been looking at his watch since earlier?
What is he waiting for?
“How wonderful that Rose and the young lord are of the same age. She’s been so lonely without friends her age. I hope they can become close friends through this opportunity.”
It was then that the Countess, seizing the moment, broke the tense silence.
“Not to boast about my daughters, but Rose and Daisy are unusually cultured and educated for their age. Perhaps it’s because they were privately tutored by renowned educators in various fields rather than attending the academy.”
The Count inwardly screamed.
Is this a meeting or a marriage interview? Can’t she read the room?
The fate of the Bluewood family hung on that damned mouse’s life or death.
The Duke was supposed to be sent away without causing trouble, as he had firmly instructed her!
But when would they get another chance to converse with such an influential figure here at the Bluewood County?
Even if it was more negative than not, it was important to leave a lasting impression on the Duke.
The Countess continued unabashedly, eyes filled with greed.
“I heard the young lord didn’t attend the academy either. No doubt, he received quality education separately, but he must have missed the chance to mingle with his peers.”
“That’s true.”
The Duke finally responded.
“That boy has no friends. Never had, never will.”
He didn’t need to add that.
“And it’s not that he didn’t attend the academy; he was expelled shortly after enrollment. Or should I say, he left of his own accord.”
“Is, is that so?”
“He’s a boy without any sociability at all, given his inflexibility. Wonder who he takes after…”
The Duke began to lament.
The Countess momentarily lost her direction, thinking she might have stepped on a landmine.
But she quickly regained her composure. It was a rare opportunity, after all!
“Why do you say he’ll never have friends?”
“Hmm?”
“Since our paths have crossed this way, why not get along well with my daughters?”
The old man’s lips curled with an inscrutable interest.
“No need to worry about that. It seems he’s already getting along well with one of your daughters.”
“Oh, really?”
The Countess brightened yet showed confusion. How did he know that? Was it the Duke’s wish? Had he earmarked one of her daughters as a match for his grandson?
“Which one are you referring to?”
Rose, the eldest? Or Daisy, the second?
She asked eagerly.
But the moment she locked eyes with the old man, she was startled.
The gold in his eyes flickered like the flames of judgment.
The Countess suddenly felt a chill.
Why was it suddenly hard to breathe, as if a blade hovered over her vital spot?
In that frozen moment,
“I’m talking about your third daughter.”
The Countess’s heart dropped to the ground with the Duke’s quiet declaration.
