She thought about not wearing underwear this morning. It was because Theodore would take them away anyway, claiming they needed to be destroyed.
When Daphne realized that he had deliberately not returned the panties she had worn on their first day in his office, she took off her underwear and gave them to him.
‘He makes excuses like saying I need to be exorcised, but he must have ulterior motives.’

Next week, Thalia would leave the convent to return to secular life. After her, Marianne would follow, and the rest of their peers would gradually leave as well. The moment of parting was approaching. Even though she was tired, Daphne didn’t want to let the time spent with them slip by unnoticed.
As she finished her duties around the convent and sat down to enjoy some fresh strawberry jam spread on warm bread with the other novices, a voice calling her name rang out.
“Daphne! Are you here, Daphne?”
Thalia, biting into a slice of bread with strawberry jam, tilted her head.
“Isn’t that Bishop Isabella? What’s going on?”
“Daphne, I think it’s time for you to go!”
As if confirming Marianne’s words, the bell in the church tower rang. Startled by the bell signaling three o’clock, Daphne quickly stood up. She was usually punctual, always arriving at the cardinal’s office before the bell rang, but today, she was running late.
“Sorry, guys! I’ll go ahead!”
“Take care!”
“See you later, Daphne!”
Brushing the crumbs from her mouth, Daphne hurried off to find Bishop Isabelle who had been looking for her.
“Oh, Daphne! I was supposed to let you know the time, but I completely forgot!”
Bishop Isabella said, wiping sweat from her wrinkled brow. It seemed the elderly bishop, who had bad knees, had hurried to find her in a rush.
“Come on, let’s go. I must apologize to His Eminence.”
Bishop Isabella said, concerned about being late to meet the cardinal, and worried that Daphne might be scolded if she went alone. As she tapped her fingertip against her brow to wipe away the sweat, Daphne shook her head.
“You don’t need to worry, Bishop. You should rest. You haven’t had a proper break lately with all the preparations for the others’ return to secular life.”
“Still…”
“If I go alone, I’ll get there a bit faster. Besides, if I tell the others I spent time with my peers, Cardinal Theodore will understand. He’s a kind man, after all.”
Of course, calling him purely merciful would be a stretch, given how little one truly understood him. But it seemed to make sense to Bishop Isabella.

“Exactly. So please, take a rest, Bishop.”
After sending Bishop Isabella off to rest, Daphne hurried to the stairs leading to the office.

She was nearly gasping for air after climbing the stairs without pause. The few extra steps she had to take, climbing two steps at a time, made her taste blood in her throat. Her neck hurt terribly.
‘I’m glad I sent Bishop Isabella back. If I had made her climb this with me, she would’ve fallen ill for sure.’
Swallowing with her parched throat, Daphne stood before the office door. Her heart was pounding.
