The Reward for Saving The World is a Husband - Chapter 50
‘I knew it was necessary.’
I had realized this fact ever since I glimpsed Beric’s, no, the poison frog’s, memories. In this world, not speaking and behaving in accordance with one’s social rank could very well lead to execution.
‘If I want to stay focused on my work without being nitpicked in Tenaclade or the capital, I need to learn this.’
“Elias, I have a favor to ask…”
And so, Elias brought me a stack of about ten language books, carefully chosen to match my level, and placed them in front of me.
‘Alright, let’s finish reading all of these within three days.’
My original goal was slightly delayed due to this sudden short-term plan, but it couldn’t be helped.
‘Besides, the Saintess probably needs more time too.’
Though she had promised to help me find a reason to go to Tenaclade, it wouldn’t be easy to conjure one out of thin air. Until she contacted me, I could focus on what I could do immediately.
‘Yes, that’s what I should be doing…’
“It’s time for bed, Elesha.”
This last change was testing my patience.
There were still documents piled up on his desk, and I hadn’t yet finished my goals for the day either.
Callen, who had been helping Elias with his work, looked up in surprise and stared at his master.
“Callen, you should leave early today as well. We’ve already finished the urgent tasks.”
“Ah…”
Callen hesitated for a moment, glanced out the window, and then stood up.
“Understood, My Lord. Please rest well.”
His hasty departure, as he quickly bowed and left the office, seemed almost like he was flustered.
Once the office door was closed, I turned to Elias and asked, “You’re heading to bed already? It’s still early evening.”
Saving time had always been second nature to me.
“Why, do you dislike it?”
…But as he approached and wrapped his arm around my shoulders, I found it hard to resist the anticipation of what was to come.
“Of course not! The earlier you sleep, the earlier you wake up.”
I playfully responded and immediately got up, which brought an unguarded smile to his face, as innocent as a boy’s.
As we left the office, hand in hand, a translucent window suddenly appeared before me.
Lucendria Empire (Count Rachdel’s Territory): +20 Amern Church: +3
It was already the third update today. The more effort Elias put into caring for me, the more my influence grew in Rachdel County.
However, I wasn’t particularly focused or happy about this development.
After all, if you don’t build something with your own recognized abilities, it could easily crumble like a sandcastle.
And where there’s light, there’s also a shadow…
“Could she really be a witch?”
Just as we were heading down the central staircase to the bedroom, I overheard a conversation from the kitchen below.
The maids were chattering away as they cleaned up.
“How else would our master, who’s never shown interest in women before…”
“She is beautiful, though.”
“That makes it even stranger. Where on earth did such a beautiful woman come from all of a sudden?”
Though they thought they were whispering, I could hear their words as clearly as if they were right next to me, thanks to my heightened senses.
“They say she was taken from a dragon’s lair. What if she’s actually the dragon herself?”
“Oh? That sounds believable.”
“Exactly. Our master’s completely changed since she appeared.”
Though their conversation danced on the line between suspicion and curiosity, there was no malice. In fact, their doubts were similar to the ones Elias had when he first met me.
‘Elias probably still hasn’t fully grasped who or what I am either.’
I glanced at Elias.
While he had clearly heard the maids talking, it seemed he hadn’t caught the specifics of their conversation, as his expression remained unchanged.
He looked at me with slight curiosity, wondering why I’d suddenly stopped walking, but when I resumed, he seemed satisfied.
It was clear his mind was filled with one thing right now, likely the same thing as mine.
