The Wicked Wife's Dark History Keeps Coming Back To Haunt Her - Chapter 57
If she had truly lost her memory, she might have been excited, thinking this was the start of a romance. But she had come too far in life for such delusions.
“I’m sorry!”
Nina quickly apologized and pulled herself out of his arms.
But then, he suddenly took a step closer.
“D-Duke…?”
The distance between them had shrunk enough for his heavy scent to overwhelm her senses.
Startled, Nina pressed herself against the bookshelf.
…Ba-thump, ba-thump, ba-thump.
With less than the width of a hand between them, he stretched his arm upward.
“…”
The tension from the mere half-hand width between them was palpable.
She had convinced herself that she no longer had feelings for her husband, and she hadn’t been conscious of him for a while…
But the slow, almost imperceptible proximity, where their clothes seemed like they could brush against each other at any moment, brought an inexplicable tension.
And then,
Swoosh.
The closeness that had seemed so overwhelming suddenly dissipated with a step backward.
“Is this what you wanted?”
“Oh…”
In his hand was the cause of all this—the legal dictionary.
Nina, with a dazed expression, reached out her hand.
“Thanks…?”
“Are you going to read it here?”
But after a quick glance at his hand, he lifted the book slightly and asked.
“Huh? Um, no, I was going to take it back to my room…”
Still bewildered, she answered, and he started walking toward the door.
Was he really doing this for her?
As Nina stood there in disbelief, frozen, he turned back to look at her and asked,
“Aren’t you coming?”
“I’m coming!”
Nina snapped back to reality and quickly followed him.
Since she’d regressed, she’d experienced all sorts of things—eating together, a bit of physical contact(?), and now even getting help from him.
At this point, it wasn’t just hopeful thinking anymore.
If someone still couldn’t see that they were now a step closer to a safe divorce, you could say they had zero awareness.
Just as she thought her life had taken an unexpected turn after regressing, they arrived at her room, and he placed the dictionary on the table.
“If you ever need to handle such heavy books in the future, just call for someone.”
“I will. Thank you so much for your help.”
Feeling better, Nina smiled and nodded.
“…”
What? Was there something on her face?
As he stared at her intently, Nina brushed her face with the back of her hand.
She hadn’t eaten anything messy, so there shouldn’t be anything on her face.
Should she check the mirror?
As she tilted her head in confusion, he gave a slight nod and turned to leave.
“…”
After silently watching him leave, Nina looked at the thick dictionary.
“I wonder how much this weighs…”
She lifted it with both hands.
Though she had expected it to be heavy based on its thickness, it was even heavier than she had imagined.
‘Isn’t this like carrying a sack of rice?’
Only then did she realize why he had asked if she was out of her mind.
Trying to pull such a heavy, large book from such a high shelf without any help—
If he hadn’t happened to pass by, she might have been seriously hurt.
Nina shivered at the thought.
At least she wasn’t hurt. Now it was time to focus on reviewing the basic legal terms.
Nina opened the dictionary.
The pages were packed with tiny, dense text that made her head throb just from looking at it, but she had a long way to go.
With her nose practically buried in the book, she dove into preparing her lecture.
***
The cozy library filled with old books was Ash’s favorite place in the mansion.
The solitude and comfort of the space provided a peaceful rest for his weary mind.
“…”
With a hardened expression, Ash stopped in his tracks after leaving Nina’s room, staring down at his palm.
The warmth of her delicate body still lingered on his hand, as if it hadn’t yet faded.
…Soft and slender.
She was fragile, like a twig that would snap with just a bit of pressure.
“The faction meeting is being held at Count Cannon’s place, isn’t it? So where have you been for an hour?”
“Whose business card is this? It’s a woman’s name. Are you secretly meeting courtesans behind my back?”
“You’re married, so act like it! Do you really not see that woman flirting with you? You think I’m just making this up?”
“I won’t let it go! I’ll ruin that shameless woman in high society! How dare she flirt with my husband…!”
Until now, he hadn’t realized that her body, too, was just as fragile as any other woman’s.
