The Wicked Wife's Dark History Keeps Coming Back To Haunt Her - Chapter 7
The guard standing in front of the study spoke stiffly, showing no intention of relaying the message to the Duke.
“I apologize, but His Grace is engaged in important business and has strictly instructed not to be disturbed.”
After several futile attempts, it became clear that unless she physically forced her way in, she wouldn’t get through the door to the study.
“Madam, please just come back later…”
“It’s alright, this is something I must endure.”
Nina turned and smiled at Marsha, who was anxiously fidgeting behind her.
It’s not that she hadn’t expected this.
If it had been easy to see her husband’s expensive face, her past self wouldn’t have resorted to usury and stalking.
“Then, I’ll wait here.”
“Do as you please.”
The attendant replied curtly, holding his head high.
“That insolent…!”
Marsha clenched her fists and stepped forward, looking ready to fight at the attendant’s disrespectful attitude toward the Duchess.
Nina swallowed a bitter smile and quietly warned her.
“Marsha.”
“But, Madam, this is…!”
“Enough. I don’t want to cause a scene before an important conversation.”
“…”
Marsha bit her lip in frustration.
How could she not understand the feelings of her small, fierce chihuahua who would do anything for her?
But since today’s conversation with her husband was about divorce, even a small disturbance was unacceptable.
“Marsha, prepare a bath for me to rest in after my conversation with the Duke.”
“Madam…”
“Go on.”
Marsha seemed reluctant to leave Nina alone, but she didn’t want to show a pathetic side to her only ally.
Marsha finally left, though it was clear she didn’t want to.
“…”
Left alone with the attendant, Nina straightened her back and waited for the door to open.
‘He probably thinks I’m here to confront him after his days of absence.’
He likely assumed she would throw a tantrum and leave in a fit, just as she had for the past two years.
It was understandable given the repeated routine.
Though she tried to appear composed, Nina felt like dying inside.
The attendant’s mocking expression and the stares of the servants passing by the corridor felt like needles pricking her.
Most of them had either witnessed her drunken rages or heard about them through gossip.
She felt like she might go insane from the humiliation, but she kept repeating to herself that she was okay.
‘I’m okay, I’m okay, I’m okay…’
After the divorce, with time, people would forget about her.
‘So, I don’t care if they laugh or point fingers.’
Nina swallowed hard, holding her head high and standing still like a statue.
Ten minutes, twenty minutes, thirty minutes passed.
As time went by, cold sweat trickled down her back.
She hadn’t recovered yet, so she hadn’t returned to her normal condition.
With bruises still all over her body, standing for a long time made her back and knees hurt. More than that, she felt feverish—but maybe that was just in her imagination.
How long had she been waiting?
Creak—
The tightly closed study door opened.
(Ex)husband… No, (current)husband.
A man almost 190cm tall, with black hair slicked back, a broad forehead, a striking nose, and deep gray eyes.
A man who looked like a classic handsome actor from overseas who had ruled the screen for a century frowned as soon as he saw her.
As if wondering why she was still there.
“By now, the divorce papers should have been delivered to your family home.”
“Honey, what on earth are you talking about all of a sudden…?”
“If you want to submit a response within the deadline, you should leave now.”
“What are you talking about! Divorce? If my grandfather finds out…!”
“You don’t need to worry about that. I personally had your grandfather removed from his position a few days ago.”
“N-No way, that’s not possible…!”
“Did you really think I’d live with you forever?”
Even on the day he announced the divorce, he looked at her with such disdain.
It felt like she had gone back to that day in the past, or rather, the future from the current perspective, staring in shock.
He clicked his tongue and walked past her as if she were a bug.
Nina, coming to her senses, hurriedly grabbed his arm.
“H-Honey, wait…!”
Smack!
“Ah!”
He harshly slapped her hand away.
